  • This is the first time I have had a K&B 61 engine. I take a quick look inside to attempt to determine why a new engine would feel so stiff. Look for upcoming run videos of this engine.

My two favorite engines back then was an OS .25 and a KB .40. I put many hours using the KB. Price and performance made it a winner for me. A Champion in my book.

That little engine has big history behind it!

I’ve adopted the habit of always warming up these engines with the heat gun and lubing them before I even try to turn them if they’ve been sitting a long time.

looks new to me. I have several of the kB motors. the carb you have is from mode 80s. I love that carb. Easier to set than the one that followed it. tell me note about the muffler. that looks modified. I believe the plug above the rear cover is for removing the wrist pin. Cut out is for better scavenging. that is a loop scavenging baffle on the piston. You might even find two holes on the intake side of the piston for scavenging too.
I think I am wrong about screw on the back side of the cylinder. I have never disassembled my 61s. Some of the newer 61s, which are from the same casting, have the plug but no screw. Looking at the exploded diagram on the MECOA site, they do call that screw an 'Access cap'. Access to what, I guess I will find out when I disassemble one of my motors.

that design is called cross flow charge. looped charged designs don't have a piston baffle, its a flat top piston.it uses 3 opr more intake transfer ports to direct the fuel charge to the top of cylinder and gives more power and better fuel combustion

k&b design is good. they run well with modest power. I agree with you comment on the casting though. they are better than Fox but not ad good as OS for sure. I will put that carb up against some of the best in the industry. It may not look like much but the idle, transition and top end mix control is tops in my book.

My very first RC engine. I t was on a Goldberg Senior Falcon.

they had to have a way to remove the wrist pin since the block is unitized with front housing. the 40does not have this plug as the from housing comes off.

Besides being loud, they are good engines. Don't let the casting "flaws" sway your opinion of the engines. Sometimes Function trumps Form.. :) FWIW - The PDP version of this engine makes almost the same power as a Schnürle .61 does. Clarence Lee still does PDP modification to the K&B engines. Even non-PDP, you have a nice score here.

Oh I am quite excited about this engine. It seems to behave very well. I have 3 total tanks of fuel through it now.

I can tell by your enthusiasm. Because that stock muffler is pretty loud, try another muffler to quiet it down some. Shouldn't hinder power much. I try to avoid annoying my neighbors too.

NO way am I changing exhaust! I like this thing bone stock, to hell with the neighbors!!!

LOL! If I'm ever in your town, I'll bring my Jett 56LX with full pipe over. If that beast doesn't piss the neighbors off, nothing will!! :)

Or a pulse jet. I had one of those offered to me, I declined.... LOL

I would like to purchase a new K&B .61 Goldhead, but MEACOA is no longer producing the items. Where can I get a new one?

The piston design is called a deflector dome piston, really it means that the engine is not using Schnuerle loop scavenging.

The muffler has the C.F. Lee ( designer ) modification. It is very loud in an effort to maximize power output. I couldn't see if the engine had his stamp on the lug -- he marks the case if he does the PDP mod to an engine.

That is very cool information! I just pulled the engine out and looked it over again. I do not see any other markings on this engine aside from maybe a serial number or manufacturer marking on the outside of the left mounting lug.

Are you referring to the "Flow thru Muffler'? That was available on the Veco 61? Or the closed front K/B muffler? I have 2 Clarence Lee PDP modified engines and both have the flow thru muffler. I shipped these NIB engines to him several years ago for the mod. To be clear,, Veco 61's.

Would you say these are good engines? Compared to enya or o.s?

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  6 років тому

K&B are good engines but they cannot compare to the Enya or older OS engines, no.

David McIntire I just need a .30 to work good and last. I had this motor here, ran good but never flew it so I don't know

Could be. I thought I had read or heard that Fox engines were test run, maybe these too.
