There is a theory. This mv was delayed TWICE. The second time it was suppose to drop and it dropped 11 hours later. Based on the teasers, there are sets in the teaser that didn't make it into the final video (like Irene with the knife). My theory is that they had more sets but it was too not pg and horror like so sm cut it out last minute to keep the video rated 15. Which is sad. I want a unsensored version.

re: the reusing of sets I don't think it's necessarily because they had less budget but because they seem to have cut some stuff. Whether it's because they were concerned about censors and purposefully removed everything with the girls involving the gun (EDIT: and by gun, I mean knife) and potentially other more violent imagery, or because they lost footage again, there is definitely some stuff that hasn't been released publicly. Hence the video being delayed for almost a day with no explanation.

Umpah umpah was improvised, it was meant to be filmed outside but the weather wasn't working for them so they did what they could I'm a short span of time, personally I'm a fan of how it turned out. I like that its not realistic sets if that makes sense, adds to the charm of the video

Ignoring the theories that there were more sets that didn't make it into the final cut because of explicit content and hence the delay -- SM also gave us another MV for a post-release single Naughty, gave us multiple performance videos for Monster as well, have Red Velvet promoting both Monster and Naughty for a week, and are giving us both an Irene and Seulgi Solo Performance MVs. They've also given us Behind the scene videos, Gave Irene and seulgi their OWN reality show (Level Up Thrilling Project), and promoted Irene and Seulgi on MULTIPLE variety shows. I've never seen this much promotion for Red Velvet, seems SM went all out for this subunit. I still don't know exactly why - there's many theories including 1) Wendy still recovering so they want this to fill in the gap and feed us well - and also to make up for Psycho being cut short 2) New Girl Group Coming 3) SM got a new director or something and they are finally promoting properly under this new management.
Monster is already INCREDIBLE but man Naughty was released today.. and that one killed me I've never seen something so awesome! Hope you'll react to it too 😊
There is one specific theory that I really liked about this MV; it said that Irene and Seulgi are actually 2 sides of one character that are trying to fight each other off and take full control. That's why the video has so many scenes that are symmetrical and most of the choreo is mirrored. Also the spider dance in the beginning has Irene as the face of the monster but Seulgi controlling it, but throughout the music video we see Irene taking over because she is the actual monster, and so the video ends with the same monster except Irene is the one in control with Seulgi as the face.
PD being literally breathless after watching it a second time is a mood. They really went hard with this song, the video and the choreo are stunning, i love everything. I've been listening to the song nonstop since it came out and i just love it even more, it's soooo good. I don't think your rating is going to go down after listening to it more times. That Seulgi part is also my favorite because it feels like you can hear her expressions while recording that like it’s so strong you almost wanna make faces that matches

I never saw anyone mention it ever _but_ my favourite part of the song is when Seulgi sings from her heart, that harshness in her voice comes through and she emphasizes on every syllable she utters and _then_ suddenly Irene comes through with her silky, husky, breathy voice, starts singing like an angel and they sound *nothing* alike. I LOVE that contrast. It's as if one of them is trying to free herself from the toxic relationship, and the other is trying to sing them a false lullaby to convince them to stay. Anyways. My theory on this mv is that Seulgi is the “monster” and she has set her eyes on a prey which is Irene to influence her into becoming a monster like her. Which is why in the Choreo Seulgi is the one controlling Irene, but what Seulgi doesn’t know is that Irene has been a monster the entire time and she slowly starts controlling Seulgi and also the back up dancers then they started to “fight” for control when they we’re doing the mirror dancing, but Irene came out to be the bigger monster and was now controlling Seulgi and the back up dancers.
I do really think its a big budget.. the album package was so stunning and it has 3 kinds(the middle note album and top note album and the base note album) which i cant afford. Thats why im just streaming.

I know how you feel. It is a fantastic song for the both of them. I very addicted to the song and the MV. There is just something about it that draws you in and captivates you. The whole production, costumes, colours, editing, camera work, choreography and everyone involved are just amazing.

I mean the whole point is that there’s two members, the dynamic works so well and would definitely not hit as hard if all five members had to be included. There are things you can do with more members, but there are also concepts that only really work well starring one or two.
This proves that there should be sub groups in large K-pop bands and that we need more duo only groups. If the right two are together,then thats all you need to make an awesome song and amazing video.

Anyway, this subunit is stellar, song is amazing, they are gorgeous. Loved it!!
What I got from this MV is that the predator (Seulgi) should never underestimate the prey (Irene) because then the roles can reverse and the predator becomes the prey.

Actually this is the first sub-unit for Red Velvet, SM invest a lot, i guess because of promotions and contents that we've never seen from RV whole group. For the MV we saw how they emphasize more on the choreography and it actually lit since not everyone did that.

There's a lot of scenes which were showed in behind the scene videos that were not in the M/V, so I really think they were edited out.
Go look at past teasers, plenty of it isnt it the MVs
