Syndrome’s name is a reference to Hero Syndrome, a condition where a person creates dangerous situations so that they can play the “hero”, which is exactly what Syndrome did in the movie.
One of the most famous examples being John Leonard Orr, a firefighter who turned into a serial arsonist.
Very Interesting, Thanks!
A really defining moment is when he saves the people from the truck only to cockily toss it behind him, causing it to explode without seeing if anyone was there.
@@anthonyvasquezactor That is the moment he goes from being an obsessive narcissistic sociopath responding to the trauma of rejection as a child, to full-on psychopath.
His stalker behavior as a kid is sketchy, but the utter disregard is where one starts thinking we need a MRI of this guy's brain.
@@jasonknight1085lmao I just read about that the other day
Mary: "She's multi=purpose." Exactly what Brad Bird (the writer, director, and voice of Edna) intended. Each of the powers corresponds to what the characters are. Bob is the father so his power is strength and toughness. Helen is mom, so he has to be superflexible. Violet is the teenage girl, so wants to be invisible and shield herself from the world. Dash is a boy who is nothing but a ball of energy zooming around. Jack Jack is the baby, so he can change moods (and powers) with a moment's notice. And Frozone is voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, so he's cool.
Also, as a baby, Jack-Jack is sheer unlimited potential.
@@kathyastrom1315he's not set yet... Every potential is still open.
I wonder what will happen in the future...
I've not seen The Incredibles 2 so I have no clue what happens
The short Jack-Jack Attack is a lot of fun. The idea for this short came from an idea for a scene originally considered for inclusion in The Incredibles; it was cut from the feature and subsequently expanded.
🤔 It's too bad they didn't append it with the credits.
THIS! Jack-Jack Attack is awesome. The sequel is solid as well.
Second this! 👍
The voice for Edna is actually the director Brad Bird himself
The facial appearance of both Mr. Incredible and Syndrome were modeled on Brad Bird as well. He's a fairly big guy with a broad, heavy chin.
The two old men at the end commenting on "There's no school like old school" were voiced (and made to look like) the brilliant Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson. They were involved with almost every major Walt Disney animated film from the 1930s through the 1980s. Not for the channel but for your own pleasure, you should watch the documentary "Frank and Ollie," which is about their careers and their lifelong friendship.
This is a really good movie I love Edna Mole she is modeled after the multi Oscar winning fashion designer .Edith Head...
"NO CAPES!"
And voiced by Brad Bird, the director.
@@migmit Bird tells a great story in some behind the scenes material about pitching the character and trying to get people to do the voice he had in mind by doing essentially the voice heard in the movie for them as a reference, and finally being told the voice he's doing is so good he should just do it himself.
Heh. Autocorrect is a pain, isn't it?
@@jean-paulaudette9246 indeed 🤣
I love the retro-futurism designs especially Syndrome's base which looks like a Ken Adams designed James Bond villian lair.
Right out of You Only Live Twice.
It kinds of fits in this universe too, like a world where you have superheroes is also likely to end up being a little more futuristic where you can spend more money on research and public works.
The musical score is also right in tune with the late 60's, James Bond style. Just brilliant.
@@Stogie2112- I suspect that they hoped to get John Barry for the score. They lifted some actual James Bond music for the trailer. But he had retired at this point. There's also traces of what seems like Henry Mancini, creator of, among other things, the Pink Panther theme.
Anyway, this is one of the titles that truly put Michael Giacchino on the map as one of the greats. It was weird to see an interview by Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan in their podcast series "The Friendship Onion," where he said that he constantly felt that his work was no good.
Fun thing about voice for Edna: Director said to voice actress "This is how she should sound like" did the voice and everyone insisted he voiced her for whole movie.
Edna's appearance, voice, and whole manner are modeled on legendary Hollywood costume designer Edith Head.
@@user-mg5mv2tn8q Yeah I can never remember the name which is funny since they purposely gave the character similar sounding name.
Not so fun for the voice actress who no longer had the job as Edna 😮
@@LeviBulger I think it was Lily Tomlin and it was she that told Brad Bird he sounded too good to not do it himself, if I remember. So she wouldn't have been upset about it.
@@emilyelizabethbuchanan998 Neat.
I think it's such a funny detail that when Helen punches Mirage, you can see she was actually aiming for Bob too, but he dodged it at the last second. 😂
How have I never noticed that?! Went back and watched, that is great 😂
The true villains of this movie: The lawyers, the government, and the corporations.
Yeah. Imagine a world without the due process of law, where instead of calling the police or having a lawyer to defend you if unjustly accused, you'd have to rely on a superhero noticing you. A world without any government to provide the frame in which daily life happens: infrastructure, education, healthcare, all the things governments in civilized countries provide and which superheroes do not. A world without business and commerce to create economy to provide you with the stuff you consume and use, and the services you require - ever tried to grow, raise and manufacture everything you need for making breakfast?
That's the inherent flaw of superhero movies. They make of humans a herd of cattle unable to do anything for themselves without a superhero saving them - from supervillains. As if real life were like that.
Which superhero do you picture *solving* the problem in the Middle East? Not destroying one side and favoring the other. SOLVING the problem. Law, governments and even corporations have a bigger chance than any imaginary superhero.
Still the best Fantastic 4 movie ever made. The “I CAN’T LOSE YOU AGAIN” moment is so perfect and hits me hard every time I see it.
That sentence delivered in that soul crushed tone, plus his hunched up posture was perfect. He had faced his absolute worst nightmare, gone through that ultimate pain, and knows, deep within him, with unshakable certainty, he won't ever be able to face it again. He'd rather die himself than face it again.😢 No physical pain would ever come close to that.
That's also why he was so ridiculously overjoyed when he saw Helen, even when he knew he was in deep kimchi for lying to her. He had just recovered from that nightmare, and now nothing comes between him and saving his family.
There's a minimovie called "Jack Jack attack" which shows what happened while he was with the babysitter. You should check it out.
Absolutely must watch.
This is one of my fav Pixar movies! I love the story and the retro 60s style!
A couple of the other voice actors in this: Helen is played by Holly Hunter, who was Ed in Raising Arizona. You might have recognized the voice of Bob's boss, since it is rather distinctive. If you didn't, well that's just "Inconceivable!"
You keep using that word........
I don't think it means what you think it does.
Anybody wanna peanut?
In the German dubbing, he is voiced by the late Herbert Feuerstein, who even looked like this.
Who else wants to see Mary react to "Raising Arizona"? XD
Bob Parr: The head of the family. Strong, indestructible, never weakens, always there to protect
Helen Parr: The manager of the family. Multi-tasking, must be flexible to no end
Violet Parr: The insecure teenager: Feels invisible/neglected, introverted, keeps people away from her
Daschle Parr: The energetic boy: Always ready for action, loves to be challenged, you can't slow him down
Jack-Jack Parr: The baby. Just starting life. Unlimited potential to be anything he wants!
Throughout the movie, you hear the messages from the mother to the babysitter about Jack Jack. If you have the DVD, there is a small movie where you get to see the reactions between the babysitter and jack jack which would be the other side of the phone calls.. definitely worth watching.
The short "Jack-Jack Attack" can be found on Disney+ as well. However, the DVD has a lot of fun extras that are missing from the Blu-ray and Disney+, like dossiers of lots of the superheroes from the Incredibles' past, and a silly and deliberately bad cartoon based on Mr. Incredible and Frozone with commentaries by them.
One of the best "superhero" movies ever made.
The tricycle boy is voiced by director Brad Bird's son Nick, who also voiced Squirt in Finding Nemo. His older Michael plays Tony Rydinger. Brad himself voices Edna Mode. Initally, he was just doing the scratch voice (he also did Bob and Syndrome, also both are physically based on him in design) and was aiming to use Lily Tomlin but when she heard the scratch voice she said "What do you need me for? You already got her!".
The airplane scene is just... perfect. Everything came together just right. Acting, script, direction, cinematography. Perfect.
In the original script it was supposed to be even darker. Helen was supposed to have the guy she called be the pilot who flies her (and the kids). But ultimately she could only save herself and the kids, but not him from the explosion. When the debris from the plane crashes into the ocean around them Helen was supposed to come face to face with the slowly sinking corpse of her pilot friend.
This was to show that such actions have irreversible consequences. But that was considered too dark for a kids' movie so they changed it to the one we saw.
@@RustyDust101 Yeah, that'd be pretty hard on Violet, after she was unable to do the force field big enough.
Syndrome's "hero" music when he shows up in the city is his theme song, but played on a major key, and using the instruments for Mr. Incredible's theme.
This is the first of MANY movies that Michael Giacchino did the music for; this film, Ratatouille, and Up are his best works.
Have you tried Megamind? It's almost an antithesis to this one. Here we side with superheroes going against a guy with technology, in Megamind we side with a tech guy battling supers.
Your child is very lucky to have parents like you.
For animated movies, How to Train Your Dragon series is a MUST watch! DreamWorks Studios has a way of touching the heart and the funny bone.
A definite must watch after this is the Pixar short "Jack Jack Attack"
10:42 he’s a Super, which means the government is in charge of relocating him and helping maintain his secret identity. That should be enough to help him out of prison
This and “Wall E” are my two favorites. The comment, “they’re penetrating the bureaucracy!” cracks me up.
GL with early motherhood. Can be difficult, but kids are the best thing in life
About the powers:
Dad = strong
Mom = stretched in all directions
Boy = lots of energy, always running around
Teen girl = shy, wants to be invisible
You know Marie is angry at a bad guy when she starts yelling in her native language 😂.
Completely irrelevant aside, but one of the cases of cursing that I've found the most amusing in a movie has to be Peter Stormare in Jurassic Park 2. When he's attacked by swarms of little dinos, he swears in his native Swedish, even though his character's name Dieter seems to indicate that he's supposed to be German.
"Had to take a break but I'm back. Not that you guys know."
Actually I heard the knocking on the door at 13:30 and thought it was my door so I went to answer it 😅
Edna: "No capes!!" Syndrome: Killed by cape caught in jet turbine!
This movie is one of Pixar's most mature movies, and I'm here for it. I mean they immediately set the tone in the opening with an attempted suicide. Then you start laying out the other things in it:
Actually realistic lawsuits (one of the papers covers a super with x ray vision, implicating him as a peeping tom)
Government suppression of a race (the supers)
genocide (yet again, of the supers)
midlife crisis
ptsd (Edna recalls every single date of a super killed by her designs and is therefore staunchly against capes)
showcasing marriage troubles
implied cheating
torture
onscreen death of multiple heroes, and the corpse of Gazerbeam
theres probably more im missing, but i think ive made my point. I love when Pixar isnt afraid to get heavy
If you liked this, you MUST see _The Iron Giant._
Yes!!
For some good Pixar movies that aren't yet in your archives, I recommend: Monsters Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003) and its sequel Finding Dory (2016), Inside Out (2015), and Coco (2017).
Hi Mary! I’ve always loved this one. A whole bunch of action and still pretty wholesome for the family.
Kubo and the Two Strings is a criminally underwatched masterpiece. Highly recommended. Also, you're gonna be such a good mom!
My favorite animated film is Kubo and the Two Strings. A stop-motion movie filmed in camera that looks like it is CGI. Amazing storytelling and virtuoso presentation.
Second that - the stop motion (and story) is really really well done
Should've won the Oscar that year. That animation style was a real achievement
Thing that amazes me about movies like this is they're often better written than many live action movies. Character development, character grown, worldbuilding, the relationships thing you mentioned. It's all there.
There's so much collaboration involved in getting something like this to screen that you really have to have the story and script locked down early in the process, so they'll generally put all necessary focus on making sure it's a good one. And there's no chance of last-minute, poor-quality re-writes by the writer/director/studio.
My favorite character in this wonderful movie is Edna "E" Mode, the fashion designer. She's modeled after famous film costume designer Edith Head (look her up, she's a legend), who, among many projects, worked a long time for Alfred Hitchcock (all those fantastic female creations). Her voice in the movie is actually a man, writer/director Brad Bird, the creator of THE INCREDIBLES. This is one of the best-animated feature films ever.
Great reaction! This movie is definitely a classic for me. The family really does mesh well together, and love the sequences where they're working together. In my head-canon, Dash learning to come in 2nd place is all about mastering control of his power. Easy to win 1st, takes more skill to dial it back and control his speed more carefully to win 2nd, so when he grows up, I could see his superhero name being "Silver Streak" or something like that. Oh, also, LOVED the insertion of "Movies with Mary" as Syndrome's system password. Well done :D
There is a short animation "Auntie Edna" is like a mini Incredibles 1.5
Mary, you may watch and like some really sad and dark movies, but you really make me chuckle every time you do.... especially the ones that scare you.😊
😎👍 Elastigirl was deliberately designed to look exactly like the actress that voiced her, Holly Hunter. She's been in all sorts of great movies that you'd also enjoy ("Raising Arizona," "Broadcast News" "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" etc). Another animated film which features a lot of characters that were specifically designed to look like the actors providing the voices is "Antz" (1998). 🐜 It's very easy to pick out Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, Danny Glover and Christopher Walken among the cast.
Holly Hunter was great in Always. No one has reacted to that one.
Love how you took the missile attack on Helen's plane in stride when most reactors find it the most nerve-racking scene in the movie. No matter how many times I watch it that scene would make me bite completely through my lip if I wasn't screaming.
there's a video (by Holly Hunter?) describing how the actual cockpit dialog during that scene was written by military folks who used the lingo used by actual militaries in a situation like that
This era was when Pixar and 3D animated movies were at their peak. The Incredibles, Cars, Bolt, Monster Inc, Toy Story 2 were all amazing.
Everyone being special doesn't make everyone the same. Each and every person can be special and unique in their own special and unique way.
Syndrome doesnt know Helen's name because those were secret identities. In the movie is stablished he was tracking the superheros by finding their secret identities, so he doesnt know Elastigirl is called Helen.
Fun facts: This was the first Pixar movie to be made in 1080p HD. It's sequel was the first to be made in 4K.
-This movie (up to that time) was the most labour intensive animation for Pixar. For instance, Finding nemo had just over 40 separate settings... This movie had over 200.
-Frozone's ice powers were upgraded and reused for Elsa to use in the movie Frozen.
-Several new forms of animation tech had to be invented, to make this movie possible. For instance, they had to make a bone system that would bend, stretch and flatten for Elastagirl.
"Movie's with Mary"! Nice insert!!
If Mary gives birth to Jack Jack this channel is about to get really entertaining! Stan Lee created this exact super team back in the 1960s, they are called The Fantastic Four.
The Incredibles is the greatest superhero movie of all time! It's basically a superior version of the Fantastic Four (a family with different but complementary super powers) with a plot straight out of Watchmen (a villain secretly killing off costumed heroes after they've been banned by the government, launching a phony attack against a big city, etc.) The characters are also really well developed, with strengths and weaknesses than parallel their powers. Love it.
Frozones argument with his wife is in my top 10 favorite movie scenes
I chuckled a little bit when you said at the beginning that you wanted to watch something joyful instead of dark because "The Incredibles" is the first Pixar movie with a body count! It has its serious/dark moments but overall it's good family fun. I liked the second one too. What's interesting about the second one is that it starts EXACTLY where the first one ended, with "The Underminer" causing havoc. They did a good job considering that the movies came out 14 years apart!
I like that you realized how Bob went overboard smashing his 'boss' through the wall like that. Usually reactors practically cheer at that total overkill.
You can't say Syndrome sucks at being a bad guy, he eliminated dozens of supers. He just got a little sloppy at the finish line, and never had the 'No Capes' speech.
Helen: Who's the babysitter?
Mary: Edna
Audience: Interesting idea...🤔😉
omg i lovvvveeddd this movie as a kid and still do!! violet was always my fav. i can’t wait to watch :)
No capes! Superheroes are people too. The second one is also good.
Not just one of my favorite Pixar movies, but one of my favorite movies period. The combination of superhero shenanigans and family dynamics is absolutely wonderful. It's also interesting to note that Edna Mode, designer of superhero costumes, is somewhat based on Edith Head, who designed costumes for many classic Hollywood films. You have to the watch "The Incredibles 2," which is every bit as good, or even better, than this film.
The film is also a riff on the Marvel comics series "The Fantastic Four," where Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic who is the one who stretches, eventually marries Susan Storm, The Invisible Girl, who eventually also generates force fields. It's too bad that Marvel has had an issue with coming up with a film based on the "The Fantastic Four" that is as good as "The Incredibles." Note that the bad guy right at the end of this film, the Underminer. is vaguely based on the Mole Man, the first villain The Fantastic Four fights against.
P.S. I worked for a publisher of reference books for libraries for almost 30 years. One of my colleagues in another department had a son after years of trying to get pregnant. She used to play opera music when she was pregnant so that the unborn child would be born with a love for her favorite form of classical music. I wonder if your child will be born with a love of movies.
Marvel wishes they had writers this good.
Awesome! Password “Movies with Mary”! Genius edit!
Great reaction. The music for The Incredibles 2 is even better!
You need to do a mini reaction to the short Jack Jack Attack from this movie
Your son will love this movie, it is so fun for kids and adults. Great video Mary
This movie is arguably top 3 animated movie ever
This has to be my favorite Pixar movie. You absolutely need to see the short movie Jack Jack Attack tom see what happened with the baby sitter. Also, there is a short movie about Frozone and Mr Incredible watching and commenting on the kids TV show about them. Hilarious. Loved your reaction!
So glad to hear you're going to be a mom for the first time! You will make a great one. Congratulations!
19:04 nice edit :)
I thought I was the only one that was gonna notice that 👍
I’m pretty sure he edited the sound of the coconut hitting that guys head too. 🥥
The Incredibles, WALL-E and Up are my top three Pixar films. Outstanding stories and animation.
As it happens, my brother's a large, barrel chested, blond military man, his wife is a red headed, highly competent fellow military veteran, with two kids...and older girl and blond boy. You can guess what got chosen for their group Halloween costume theme. This remains one of their favorite movies of all time.
Saw a cartoon one where a teacher is talking to a young student.
"Remember Johnny, you are unique. Just like everyone else"
With your baby on the way, I can't wait for you to see Incredibles 2!
The set of powers in a family of superheroes is pretty similar to the Marvel comics family The Fantastic 4. Strength, stretching, and invisibility/force fields are even the same powers!
One of the best decisions the Director made is having the family’s superpowers reflect their roles in a family. Dad- strong. Mom- stretched in many directions. Son- full of energy. Daughter- wants to be invisible. So well done 👏🏾!
PS. And Jack-Jack is a baby which is full of potential and not just 1 thing yet… 😊
PPS. Yes, watch the Sequel! It’s good!
The Whole thing was just amazing...the music so gorgeously set the right tone... The second one was great too. Another exceptional Anime Movie...is Monster's Inc.
"Is this... rubble?!"
I •so• wanted Mary to laugh at this.
Can't wait for the sequel
The Incredibles powers are based on The Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four movies are...various levels of flawed. That's why the running joke in superhero fandom has been "The Incredibles is the best Fantastic Four movie ever made!".
There is a chance the music you performed is actually from a James Bond movie called On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The Incredible's music is inspired and directly a reference of that James Bond movie.
The Underminer has one of the funniest lines in this or any movie and it's like 5 seconds from the end: "I've always been beneath YOU, but NOTHING is beneath ME!" 😂
The sequel is amazingly well written , just as this one was. You'll love it. Also Helen gets more of a spotlight so we also get to see a different dynamic to the super heroing.
Gonna have to hard disagree with you there. Incredibles 2 was many things but "amazingly well-written" is about the farthest thing from it IMO. They systematically undid literally every single character arc and plot point from the first movie to do them again but worse, the twist villain was obvious, generic, and clearly corporate-mandated trend-chasing, and any social commentary the movie makes is only surface-deep.
Dash was motorboating his mom lol
I don't know why ppl have extra dirty minds in today's time 😂
17:58 lol the fact that you were looking online for an Incredible suit onesie for your baby is so cute
I know its a popular one but i really love what this movie did. Its up there as one of my favourite pixar movies next to inside out
Moms are superheroes with superpowers just wait and see. ❤️❤️❤️
Please watch the "Jack-Jack Attack" short cartoon that shows what happened to the babysitter and Jack-Jack alone together!
Since Stonehenge has no faces, I'm guessing you meant Easter Island?
Please watch Jack-Jack Attack before The Incredibles 2, but react to The Incredibles 2 SOON!
This was my absolute favorite childhood movie!!! Seriously, watching it as an adult after all these years really makes you stop and think, " Wow, there's some heavy dark stuff in this film!" But that's what makes it soo riveting now.. I've come to appreciate it more now, than i did many years ago ..
You seriously need to watch Bird's masterpiece Iron GIANT!!!❤
That film is dark, it's sad, yet full if charming characters and a hot government agent😂
Thanks for the wonderful reaction video❤
Avatar the Last Airbender is a perfect show for you its pretty happy but gets dark and rough as the story progresses
19:05 props to the editor, really great little edits ^^
"Man of Steel" (2013). I bet you! The person that animated ZOD throwing SUPERMAN by his cape; had this movie in mind 😅
Love this movie! Thank you for reacting!
You need to watch Jack-Jack Attack to see the baby's superpowers!
Have you seen Happy Feet & its sequel, Happy Feet 2?
There're other unorthodox takes on the superhero genre: Despicable Me & its sequels; & Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.
Great movie. And great reaction. You figured out so many things before they happened. Fun, fun, fun. Thank you.
If it's not already on your list you should add The Waterboy. There is a strong mother component to that story and it's very funny.
This is my favorite Pixar movie, and considering the competition, that isn't easy to do. This also captures the spirit of a great Fantastic Four movie. It's a shame that a great FF movie has yet to be made on its own.
Incredibles 2 isn't as good, but it is worth watching. Megamind would be another great choice for an animated superhero movie.
I know for a fact she would like the movie Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga’Hoole. It’s pretty underrated and some of the best animation I’ve ever seen. Plus, it’s about owls and the story isn’t bad either.
Jack Jack eating from the floor? That's perfectly expected. You'll get there.
This is one of my favorite mom movies. Helen is my freaking hero, not just because she’s a superhero, but because she’s about the coolest mom ever depicted. Considering how people sometimes dump on us for having kids, or how kids roll their eyes at moms (and so do I sometimes… I just never did blend in with the mom groups), we need some cool mom representation, man.
So some other movies… not sure what you’ve seen so I’ll toss out some of the best ones I know of.
A Bug’s Life (very under-appreciated)
Incredibles 2
Lilo and Stitch
The Emperor’s New Groove
Mulan
Coco
The Book of Life
Encanto
Moana
Tarzan
Hercules (Disney)
Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron
The Secret of Kells
The Song of the Sea
My Neighbor Totoro
Ponyo
Howl’s Moving Castle
Castle in the Sky
Pooh’s Heffalump Movie
CinderElmo
The Three Musketeers (Mickey Mouse version, trust me)
Curious George (the Will Ferrell film)
The Nightmare Before Christmas (for Halloween)
Klaus (for Christmas)
Important note: I find all of these entertaining, even as an adult, but some might not be suitable for really small kids. I still have guilt for letting my 6-year-old watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit? because a scene early in it upset her so much she ran wailing to her room. I first saw it when I was 16 and never even thought about that scene until it was too late. Yeah… she thought the squeaky shoe was so cute and then, well… she’s never seen the rest of the film and she’s 25 now…
There's a short about Jak Jak and the babysitter as he gets his powers. I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but it might be fun to react to that along with the next one. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I really hate fashion people, but they made Edna so lovable.
"damn, QWERTY?" hahaaaaaaaaa as a german i find that highly amusing and can relate :D all hail QWERTZ
Bomb Voyage needs an origin story. 💣💣💣
