  • Manhattan Beach was a New York summer resort popular around the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. Sousa wrote this march (based in part on one he had written 18 years earlier) while performing there in 1893. Now it's a New York City neighborhood of the same name.
Things dicovered on the way to learning other things: Sousa dedicated "Manhattan Beach" to the resort's proprietor, entrpreneur/developer Austin ... Corbin (also big in banking and president of the Long Island Rail Road. Apprently no relation to the arranger. Good thing, too; he was a raging anti-Semite (he wouldn't allow Jews at the resort) and was instrumental in cheating the Montauk native American tribe outy of their land.
This is scored for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. The trombone part was drawn largely from the baritone/euphonium part, so that might be a more comfortable match.
Score and parts are available for a modest price at halleonard.com. Search on my name (Will Corbin) for the entire collection.
