- Can cheetahs and dogs become best friends? In Oregon USA, a rejected captive cheetah cub teams up with an unlikely friend - an animal shelter puppy. This surprising dog-cat companionship program has been going since the 1980s. Cheetahs are known as the dog of the cat family. KJ has grown in confidence alongside his canine companion named Rhino and now has a friend for life but has the relationship led to a loss of his natural cheetah instincts?

Pretty much. The same way most canids act like dogs (in fact, the name _Canidae_ comes from _canis_ , which means "dog"), and most primates act (to a limited extent) like humans.
Yep, that's my hypothesis. The whole "it's a wild animal" statement doesnt make sense because house cats are "wild" feral. Cat is a cat. It's how its raised.

@@hailee176 i was mostly joking exept for the parts where i dont like cats because every cat i know has been has bitten me and i dont mean iv annoyed them i mean while living in the same house as them and knowing them for years they always attack me whether i do nothing and ignore them or i try to give them attention or they come up to me and rub up against me. iv never picked a cat up, never touched their tails, iv given them food. cats dont like me and i want to like cats but i cant and ohhhhh most cat owners are like "clearly you have never REALLY known a cat" and if thats what you are thinking then 100% with my respect i have no intrest in you responding but other then that yeah idk me and cats just dont vibe ig and they dont like my general laid back energy especially my energy.
@@walterhartwellwhite7324 Might be that after the first negative experience, you subconsciously started showing signs of anxiety or fear when near a cat. Cats are sensetive to that and react negatively to it.
Cats can also be overstimulated. For example some people tend to pet a cat like the would a dog. This will most likely not be well received by the cat and could result in a scratching.
Cats also have different limits to what they like or dislike in terms of touching. They might have a certain spot where they don't like to be touched. Some cats only want headpats, or even not want to be touched at all.
Some cats don't like a certain gender. I've known cats who either hated men or women. Can be a sign of abuse in the past.
There's also play aggression. When playing cats senses are sharpened and a sudden motion near them can set them off. They usually are harmless, but accidents can happen.
Cats are also very territorial and can react aggressively when a stranger invades their space, which is the entire house, backyard and the rest of the street :P

I don't think it's your laid back attitude, because in my experience that's what cats like, relaxed during anything but playtime, which is just an explosion of energy.
You could try to grab a toy next time a cat scratches you (or preferably before it happens) and see if they want to play. If they do and you play with them until they get too tired, the chances of you getting scratched will reduce significantly.

Why is cheetah needing companion dogs sounds like the cutest little thing ever
It’s really not. They experience sever anxiety from being in captivity. They require vast plains in order to thrive but because of Poaching and city grown some need to be in captivity to survive as a species and the others outside are getting less and less land to roam.
@@thedudejsb So anxious they don't even want to breed in captivity. Which sucks because people tried domesticating them since Egypt. Dog sized house cats coulda been the norm today. Dx
@@DinkLover69 we do actually have those, they’re called Savannah cats, but they’re still more on the wild size than your average house cat. And humans didn’t actually domesticate cats, they domesticated themselves because living with humans was a lot easier.

I think the dog is just happy to play with a cat that’s his size and energy level. And that’s adorable.
i like when sanctuaries and conservatories replicate the wild with alot of space with alot of nature. only thing is the gates to help keep them safe from being hunted down. people think these sanctuaries and zoos are bad but they are our hope to keeping the animals safe and alive for decades to come, only improvement we can do is give them more space and nature to replicate the wild
it really just deoends on the facility, not all zoos are humane either

Zoos and aquariums or petting zoos! Are the worst don't support exploitation or animal abuse. We need to learn to see the difference between those places and sanctuaries! No captivity animals for entertainment!

Cheetahs are very rarely aggressive towards humans unless they feel threatened. Usually, then, they will try to run away.
Except when you're stupid enough to show them your human larva, then they go for it!

Yeah. Any other big cat would need to be heavily conditioned from cubhood and thoroughly trained to tolerate humans, but a wild-caught adult cheetah that has been kept in a zoo for years can be naturally affectionate towards every strange adult human that it meets without any training whatsoever.

We had a beagle/chihuahua that accepted any animal we brought into the home: cats, kittens, rabbits, etc.

That's the beautiful thing about animals, they will accept each others differences in captivity. We can learn a lot from these animals to look past our human differences.

I went to the zoo a couple years ago and they had a cheetah lion tiger and dog put together it was so sweet. The lion was named Harley he would always sleep by the tiger named forest and then the cheetah would sleep a cross them like a = with a light threw it. and the dog would always sleep hiding in all the cats it was so cute and they all loved each other so much.
If raised together, dogs and Cheetahs become best buddies.

That is tremendously wrong. Cheetahs don't behave like dogs at all. In fact, they are among the animals with the highest neuroticism, which is contrary to the majority of canines.
Many dog lovers love to compare the animals they like to dogs, it is a wrong assumption and ridiculous considering that dogs don't look like any animals (not even wolves) due to Anti-natural selection that humans did.
As the zoologist explains in the video the body language of cheetahs (and most cats) is contrary to dogs, dogs arching their backs is a signal to play for cheetahs it is a sign of threat.
Cheetahs are cautious animals since they hunt alone, they must be silent so as not to scare off their prey, while dogs are group hunters, they are noisy to warn other pack members.
Cheetahs are curious about their surroundings, because they are solitary animals, they spend a lot of time analyzing the ecosystem. Dogs (And canines in general) spend more time establishing relationships with the other members of the pack.
They are basically opposite animals. LOL

Except they’re not. Big cats include pantherines such as lions, tigers, and leopards. Mountain lions are also big cats but not pantherines. The average cheetah is less than 100lbs, which sure it’s a “big cat” but it’s not classified as one. They also don’t have the sturdy build, grappling ability, or retractable claws of true big cats.
I love lion headbutts for attention, they just ram right into whoever they are heading towards like "Hi, snuggles"
When I was in middle school I did a project on cheetahs, and found out cheetah means cat dog. I think it's because they don't have retractable claws, instead there paws are more like that of dogs.

Dogs don’t normally have beef with cats it’s just they see a new and kinda strange species, same with birds and squirrels, some dogs are fine with them, and some grow up with those species making them fine with seeing a cat or squirrel

That’s interesting about the cheetah being submissive, despite the fact he’s bigger than the dog. All domestic cats I’ve known that lived with dogs were definitely submissive. I’ve know lots of big dogs that deferred to house cats.

Many years back, my Brother had this Gigantic and very sweet Great Dane. They had a major mouse problem in the garage. His Wife had been feeding a Stray Cat that would show up occasionally. So she set up a bed & pet door for the Cat. She immediately went to work; taking care of the mouse problem. My Bro & his Wife were like, "She earns her keep" So she became part of the family. The only problem was that the Great Dane was terrified of her!!!

In my local zoo, there used to be a juvenile lion that was best friends with a dog. But after the area got flooded, a lot of the animals escaped and the lion had to get shot because it was walking in the streets. Wild times, there was a hippo that escaped too, scary.
