  • Two Bullied Pacifics at Carlisle on one afternoon, a glorious train ride around the northern part of the scenic Cumbrian Coast and filming a rebuilt light Pacific in the idyllic surroundings of ancient St Bees on a beautiful sunny day.
    What more could anyone ask?

      Cinéma vérité! Yes, it does add another - real-life - dimension to the railway scene.

    Really enjoyed your trip down the West Cumbrian coast. Reminds me of my sojourn there in the 1960s. Thank you

    Very nice video, Tim. Carlisle looked like it was bursting at the seams with all the trains turning round to go back south due to the trackwork. Really enjoyed coming along for the ride to St. Bee's. hearing the clickety-clack sounds of non-welded rails was delightful. Great use of your drone too, which really highlighted the lovely setting for St. Bee's. Well done that man! Best wishes, Ian.

      Thanks Ian.
      Opportunities to experience traditional jointed rail are increasingly rare but it remains in extensive use on the Cumbrian coast line. Although continuously welded rail is undoubtedly quieter and smoother, I enjoy the old "clickety-clack" and, like so much of the traditional railway (semaphore signals, manually-operated level crossings) it is far more interesting for the film-maker. Long may it survive!
      Best wishes.

    The Steam Engine is pure genius. So analogue! Wonderful to behold.

      Corkickle - I once walked along the clifftops from St Bees to Corkickle in a Force 9 Severe Gale - a frightening experience. I filmed there on another occasion -studio.ua-cam.com/users/video9VO_cugFCFY/edit

      Thanks Eric. I wasn't sure whether or not to include that section so I'm glad that it was appreciated. The scenery around the Cumbrian coast is spectacular - but not easy to capture from inside the train!

      There aren't all that many steam specials using the coastal route so I like to grab the chance when it arises. The weather was a bit changeable but the sun shone at St Bees and, for once, I didn't have to contend with other photographers blocking my view!
      Best wishes to you.

    Excellent footage Tim and great use of your drone at St Bees, certainly makes a difference, cheers nige😂

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 роки тому

      Thanks NIge. The drone will certainly come into its own for lineside filming but the present cost of petrol means that I can only film away from Carlisle if it's at a spot accessible by train - and the paucity of services along the Settle & Carlisle will limit the opportunities. However - make the most of what's available!
      Best wishes.

    Wow a very different video this weekend not at all what I was expecting. Interesting as I have never traveled by train on this line although I know the area quite well by car. Enjoyed the drone footage and of an engine again which I don't think I have ever seen before either. Many thanks again for your what appeared to be a very hectic environment all round John K.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks John - I do try to ring the changes and not make each new video simply a repeat of the last one. I have long maintained that the Cumbrian Coast route is one of the least recognised railway lines in Britain - to my mind definitely on a par with the Settle & Carlisle and, to anyone with a Senior Railcard, very affordable. (Just don't book from Dumfries - that usually doubles the fare - buy separate tickets from Dumfries and then onward from Carlisle).
      Take care, stay well - best wishes.

    Good and very interesting video Tim in your usually presented hightly detailed style plus a travel log well done and thanks.I went GWR on Sat and went in the direction of York to see ths Castle as its some years since l have filmed one and they dont get up north often.Have a nice Easter. Brian

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 роки тому

      Thanks Brian. I'm afraid that York is a bit beyond my travel range, which is a pity since it does see some locos which don't find their way to Carlisle. However, nowhere else rivals Carlisle for its sheer number of visitors, so I mustn't complain. Best wishes to you.

    A lovely video from the drone. I am pleased all turned out well with that. I felt rather guilty in Carlisle. The coast line is beautiful I enjoyed that, last time I went on there it was a pacer and now on my list of lines to go on again. Thank you for recommending the pasty which was delicious, I had that on my way back which I did via Newcastle another scenic line I like. I was glad I chose that way as I also had a surprise, a class 37 hauled charter train at York. So far I have not seen this pendolino.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Cedarcam - it was good to meet and, yes, the day went well despite the missed arrival of Braunton and the alarm over the missing rucksack which was lying exactly where I'd left it - no-one had panicked and called for the bomb squad!
      I agree with you about the scenic Newcastle line - come to think of it, there are six routes out of Carlisle and all are picturesque, well worth travelling repeatedly. I wonder how many other major railway centres can make a similar claim.
      Best wishes to you.

      @@schoolshorts Glad to hear that. I was looking for you sat on the train to check all was OK and could not see you. I think you are right about the scenery, every route out is picturesque and I cannot think of another station that has that many routes out which are all soon in open country.

    Great drone footage at At Bees. I was down the line at Nethertown. Braunton had let me down on the northbound too - tho for me I'm sure it was being pushedthen. Looked to be in control around the coast though.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Leslie - my first attempt at recording sound with a camera, video with the drone - and then editing them together. Unfortunately you can actually hear the drone on the sound track but it's not too obtrusive and, had I flown the drone higher its limited zoom range would have been a problem.
      Nethertown is a great filming spot but without a car (too far from my home at present-day petrol prices) getting home would have involved walking back to St Bees - not an attractive prospect with the weight I was carrying in my rucksack.
      A good day overall - best wishes.

      The footbridge at Currock Junction is a great viewing spot - I've filmed there in the past. There aren't too many steam specials using that route but at least you won't have far to go if you want to see them.
