I met Felix backstage at the Peppermint Lounge in NYC literally just days before his wife shot and killed him in April of 83. He was there as the manager for Richard Lloyd (the guitarist for television). He was such a powerful bassist! The wall of Sunn amplifiers behind him played a part in that. I later met Corky while he was working at our music publisher.
Leslie was a great guitarist and also a great Stern guest. He did probably the first (and only) live transatlantic guitar solo during a radio performance with Jack Bruce. He played live through a phone line while Jack was playing piano in England during the Howard Stern Radio Show.
Their version of Nantucket Sleighride from Mountain Live is brilliant

Long Island guy here saw Mountain numerous times. And they always blew the roof off the place.. I still have a broken drum stick that Corky discarded into the crowd at a live show .
I saw Mountain supporting Deep Purple at Knebworth in 1985. Corky Laing was hitting so hard he knocked his cymbal stand off the riser a couple of times, or more. Finally Leslie West picked up the stand and threw it at him.
I loved (love) Mountain, especially the song Nantucket Sleighride. Saw Leslie West solo (NYC) not too long before he died. So good!! Besides being a bassist, Felix Pappalardi was an arranger and producer. Everyone should read both his entry and his wife’s (Gail Collins) entry in Wikipedia. Among his many accomplishments he produced Cream, beginning with Disraeli Gears. He and his wife, Gail Collins, co-wrote with Eric Clapton Strange Brew! Gail co-wrote many songs with her husband, and did the cover artwork for most of Mountain’s albums. Though she and Felix had an open marriage, one morning upon returning home from his girlfriend, Gail shot and killed Felix (with a gun he had gifted her only a few months prior to the murder!). She got a very short jail sentence.
This song was a searing blast to many of my teen friends at the time. I was already into Hendrix and Led Zeppelin so I wasn't as shocked but the guys who were still hanging their musical tastes on Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Grassroots or similar bands were blown away.
Climbing the crest of a wave. Hope to soon go on a Nantucket Sleighride! The Leviathon calls for Blood and Thunder! But Owen to the Coffin, You Can't Get Away from Tired Angels. Peace & Love.
Hi Justin. Dave from Beyond The Sea. This is the only song by the band that I've known over the years - but what a song! And one of the all-time classic riffs.
Only really seen four bands that can sound this amazing and full with a THREE PIECE line-up; The Jimi Hendrix Experience, SRV and Double Trouble, Cream, and Mountain.
Crackin' band, good tune, but not fussed on LW's vocals in this version. His tail off on the chorus leaves it a little flat. Check out the album version, and hear the difference. Oh, and I was a little surprised to see Breaking Bad's Todd on keyboards :)
I never liked that band. I've always found their music rather unremarkable and Leslie West's voice really gets on my nerves. I saw them open for Deep Purple in 1985 and frankly it was a pain (although Purple weren't at their best either and had passed their prime at that point!).

Koool, My older Brother bought his early Sunn Bass Amps because of Felix ! 👍🎶🎸🎼✌

Awesome tune. One of my all time favorites. I just wish it was longer. Bong hit for sure!

15 in 1969 this blasted onto the airwaves. Was gobsmacked! As were everyone else under 30. 😉
SUCH a great band! Please do more. "Never In My Life", "Don't Look Around", "Theme For An Imaginary Western" - all great places to go next.

Interesting stuff, thanks. Before now I didn't know anything about Mountain other than this song and the name of Leslie West as the singer/guitarist.
This is metal band one off the first one ☝️ like Mc 5 kick the jams and blue cheer summer time blues and iggy pop

Pretty simple 12-bar blues movement but done well to perfection.
Truth.
One of my older Brother's favorite Hard Rock bands and one of the bands I got into as a "Yout" Great Rock band Justin ! 👍🎶🎸🎤🥁🎹🎼✌

Corky was one of the hardest hitting drummers in the biz. Good stuff.
Travelling in the Dark is a great unknown Mountain tune.
I saw Leslie West live. That was the loudest concert I ever attended. He played well but it was so loud that it actually hurt.
Leslie West and Felix were brilliant
I think I'll go back to the studio version. I got to see the band live in Edinburgh in the early 70s - a great stage presence and some great songs.
Hey Justin! A classic for the ages!!!👍😎
West had a wonderful tone and Felix had that buzzing, burping bass
Didn't know that was a bass I was hearing until I saw this video.
Perfection.

Another classic by Mountain is Nantucket Sleighride. 😊
@@eddhardy1054 Oops, I know that one too! The instrumental break was used as a TV theme in the UK. Thanks, Ed.
Yeah it was a news or currant affairs programme. Maybe Weekend World or something like that.

Sorry. Technically Mountain is a 4 piece band with the piano. But they have that same sound as the others still, very basic and guitar heavy.
LESLIEEEEEE WEST BABYYYYY
Marc Bolan's fave guitarist, Leslie West.
Better than the studio tape, but the live version from "Twin Peaks" is much, much better. Raw and as heavy as a bulldozer.

Well hell. I thought this was a CCR tune. LUL Shows you what I know. : D
The Great Fatsby
Too bad Leslie couldn't lay off the donuts. But a unique addiction death for a rock star.
Sweeeeet \m/ \m/
FUZZZ? Distortion is what it is.

Standard blues and the guy singing is not great live.
