23 years later and this song still holds up. Both in part to Mos Def’s INSANE talent and a worrying lack of societal progress…. Also this album came out right after I was born :)
***** You meant too say you _didn't_ know Pluto was considered a planet in 1999. I accept your apology; now thank Mr. Beltrame for taking the time to educate you.
Hey uploader, if you're listening, do you mind if I mirror this video and make it available on mobile devices? I didn't want to do it without permission. Or could you maybe toggle whatever setting to make it available for mobile devices?
litsky I do. Unfortunately I want to share this lyrical masterpiece with people for whom a simple mp3 rip is not trivial. I could just rip the video and re-upload it without mobile restrictions, but that feels rude for some reason. I'm selectively moral.
CJ Some of my facts may be off but back in the day, the govt gave “Freeway” Rick Ross crack so he could distribute it into the low-income neighborhoods and ghettos. This sparked an epidemic that saw many African Americans die or get put in prison. That’s why Mos Def mentions the high population of African Americans. Crack was used as a way to regulate the black population by making them addicted and having them kill each other off or die from substance abuse, or by giving police a reason to lock em up.
Madden 2002 Gamecube never knew the name of this song i just found this in 2018 i spent 16 years alive not knowing this song and im dissapointed with myself
Beerus Sama Just be happy you finally found it.✌ Btw, you should check out the entire album "Black on Both Sides", it was great/classic from beginning to end. Another of my favorite songs on the album is "New World Water": ua-cam.com/video/2N5Bk8FMw9Y/v-deo.html The song is from 1999, but it's still very relevant to the ongoing Flint Michigan's contaminated water crisis.
Gringo here. Growing up poor was hard. I didnt have a ghetto I had trailer parks and low income housing on the edge of the city. Hip hop always spoke to me because while my skin color is different. Ive seen a lot of the same stuff, been insulted for our economic status, witness, used, and sold weed to help pay bills. Mos Def always helped me remember that our fight isnt against one another but the people doing everything they can to leagally rob us.
this is real lyricism... you can tell thats a man that sat down THOUGHT about what he wanted to say... and constructed a very good essay, that happend to rhyme.... Its thats sad MOS is never mentioned when it comes to the King of NY... he aint gotta win, but at least have ya boy in the runnings!
This video is pure genious. So simplistic, and so accurate. Reminds me of the album cover with Mos Defs face on it, heck, it reminds me of Mos Def in general.
damn, love this JAM, bring back the old feel into a lot of the new rappers, don't get me wrong some new rappers doing their thang, but a lot of the others, need to grasp the fundamentals of HIP HOP

The lyrics and Rhyme schemes are brilliant. Mos def is one of the finest.

pure lyricism Mos!

No doubt... sounds... reasonable...
