- This is the second part of my RC Ejection Seat series. Thanks to Martin Baker for sponsoring this video. Click here to learn more about Martin baker apprenticeships: www.martin-bake...
I've already started to develop an ejection seat powered by solid fuel model rocket motors, but now it's time to stick it into an RC plane (a very large RC plane too!). Will Action Man survive? Watch to find out!

First YT sponsor I haven’t immediately skipped through in months if not years lol
huge same, wish a company in the US had a program like that!
Same here- they really hit their target audience
yeah all same might look into working with them here in the near future
same
This has to be the coolest and most relevant sponsorship ever. Someone finally figured out what we might actually be interested in!
10000 times better than raid shadow legends
@@LUIZ-vc3hg I think all those memes were astroturf to get people repeating the name of their game for free.
Actually laughed out loud at that first failed ejection test. Something about G.I. Joe just chilling there in the rocket flames, and then your casual “oh dear” just sent me
O dea
and the little oofs when he gets a hard landing
Action Man, not GI Joe.
Now that's a sponsorship :D
HOW DID YOU GET SPONSORED BY MARTIN BAKER.
THIS IS AWESOME!!!
I think someone's getting a *_sweet_* internship. 😃 Love watching worthy people succeed!
They're an awesome company!
@@Project-Air no cap
@@Project-Air yeah, i have been designing a mini edge table seat like this one and i have taken a lot of inspiration from their designs. They make awesome stuff!
@@Project-Air they have an extraordinary history... 👍🏼 🇬🇧
ua-cam.com/video/bMdv7UBdWw4/v-deo.html
what happened to this project?
Hands down the coolest integrated advertisement I have ever seen on UA-cam.
I hope to see the Action Man is awarded a medal for bravery in the future video.
After landing on his nogging a few times - Cannot be good for the grey matter !
He certainly deserves that medal !
A big shout out to my Patreons for all of the rocket motors used in this video www.patreon.com/jameswhomsley
Hi
You forgot to pin this.
Please make Part 3. My son has autism and loves ejection seats. He would love to make one like this.
Awesome! I'm glad you got sponsored by Martin Baker - they are my first choice in aircraft ejection seats.
Okay, I finished the video and I see now that the sponsorship was about education and job opportunities, not selling ejection seats to the general public.
Always a good day when James uploads a ProjectAir video, especially when it's sponsored by Martin Baker
Fact
True
I am eagerly awaiting the third video in this series.
I normally skip sponsored segments, but I highly approve of this one. I did an engineering apprenticeship over a decade ago and I can't recommend it highly enough! You get paid to learn and don't have any debt at the end of it, plus the added benefit of a qualification and a ladder to progress through a company. Also, most companies will put you with different departments for a time so you can decide whilst doing a particular job if you want to carry on with it afterwards as a career.
Why are the leading edges of jet engine hubs so...... have the aerodynamics of a brick?:)
Ikr...makes the aerodynamist in me shrivel like a frozen scrotum.
I imagine on that scale it's not of much consequence.
I'm sure he could make it more aerodynamic if he wanted to. However, the ejection seat is the "star" of this video and not the plane. Why waste his limited resources if it flies? :-)
Because it isn't finished yet
Try using the rods like on Soviet ejection seats for stabilization
Ok that has to be the first time I have been actually interested in a sponsored ad, I mean! ID LOVE TO APPLY!
Martin-Baker Ad be like: IF U EVER NEED AN EJECTION SEAT...
Maybe they can hook me up with a passenger seat.
THE VIDEO IS HERE YAAAY MAKES MY DAY!!
Me too
Loved the Martin Baker sponsorship
Oh my god, a real ejection seat company Marin-Baker for the sponsor in this video! THIS IS AWESOME!!!
Right?! :)
I have flown many RC aircraft, but I've never contemplated fitting them with an ejection seat! Good on Martin-Baker for their apprenticeship scheme too. If only they did that 30 years ago... Very cool!
Martin Baker… Saving lives for… A really long time!
Wow, what a cool sponsor. I'm fuckin' happy for you man, and it's great to see Martin Baker recognizing your talents. People like you are going to make a difference simply by having fun.
In my aerospace afficionados eyes, Martin Baker sponsoring is a f...g holy grail of sponsorships!
VERY..VERY..COOL. Nice to hear what Martin Baker does too... Great Sponsorship
It is so cool that you got Martin-Baker’s attention with this project! Years ago, when I was a training developer at McDonnell Douglas, I got to put together a bunch of stuff on the MB seat used in our T-45... basically, the Navy version of the BAE Hawk. Those seats are quite fascinating.
That cool Gryf!
Shoutout to Martin Baker. If you told me you work for Martin Baker I would think first and foremost, ‘respect’.
You should build a solid rocket motor powered x-15 that could be dropped from a RC plane or drone. That would be so cool!!
there is something special in you james! you make your project , then you make us laugh by cracking jokes on the faliure , you make it again , and you make us laugh out loud by the amazing results
Wow this is like a NASA project! Cool 👍
Although the rockets have a "cool" factor, I think I'd go for a compression spring under the seat (held in compression with a catch that can be retracted via servo). Solves a lot of problems at once (like thermal protection, latency in the rockets getting up to max thrust, imbalance in thrust between the rocket motors, the need for so _many_ rocket motors)
Oh. Martin-Baker have discovered something that is essentially a hybrid of the German "Duales Studium" and "Ausbildung" (being university studies integrated with practical experience in a company respectively an apprenticeship). Interesting and quite pleasing. I'm sure it's a great opportunity!
What a kickass sponsor
now that landing gear retraction was the greatest thing ive seen on this channel
Stan the Action Man back again!
Great to hear Martin Baker got involved.
Also love how the Meteor came out
Guy is CEO of not finishing projects lol
Man, this is by far the coolest and most relevant sponsorship ever!
Nice you highlight the ad clearly.
What I love about this lad is there’s no click bait lol brilliant video and also fair play to Martin baker for getting involved.
Litteraly the coolest youtybe sponsor ever
Props to Martin Baker for being so cool and sponsoring this video
Awesome! This is on my list of project ideas. So hard to come up with an original idea on youtube. I'm glad it is you who stole my idea! LOL 2nd part of my plans.. Make a basic 2nd airframe to produce a video of the craft going down in flames. After a successful ejection sequence of course. Cheers
Great sponsorship.
Loving your Action Mans 'Airmans Tash' !
Dressed for the part I see ! 👍 Chocks away !
Martin Baker sure is a big name in this industry, I'm happy that you got sponsored by them❤️😁
Great stuff. Awesome that Martin-Baker picked up on your project and supported it!
Damn, sick sponsorship.
Thats seriously cool to be sponsored by them.
This is freakin amazing!!!
Now imagine an fpv with head tracker.
Yes! I’ve been waiting patiently for this!
What a sponsor! Who's next? Lockheed Martin?
Oh no! Poor ol' Action Man got turned into bacon! This was cool, thanks for sharing it. Glad to be your subscriber.
That gear gave me a nerdgasm
Sweet, good one James! This is a fun project, can't wait to see it in flight. The Meteor is almost the perfect test bed for this. Cheers mate, stay well!
That's crazy, my dad works for Martin Baker America, has been since around '99 or 2000.
the only ad
that i might be intrested
CAN WE SEE A PART 3 PLEASE?
What a wild sponsorship. That's awesome.
Such a great builder and inspiring young engineer...
I love your innovative thinking and ‘can do’ approach!
Wow ! That is a lot of motors
The best "This video is sponsored by" ever 👌🏼👌🏼
I did see a review video of a robot lawn mower once that was sponsored by Manscaped. That was pretty good, too!
@@SolarWebsite 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gratz for the cool sponsorship!
I think the rockets should be mounted further back to align them better wit the CG of the seat/actionman system ^^
Really pleased to see your thoughtful projects united with the industry pioneers/ leaders in this field. Power to all your elbows and here’s to the future,
Great Video James, The fact that MB reached out to you is a wonderful indictment of both, your work on here & MB's intent to inspire & train the next generation of engineers. If you need a wingman for the big test, more than happy to bring my EDF Meteor WL419 out to play. Only wish I could have fitted a working seat to it. Been wanting to take it to Chalgrove & see it next to the real thing for years, Plus the rest of my MB fleet, the MB5 & DC3 G-APML.
The new skin graft Action Man looks fun.. And educational!
personally with multiple motor ignitions and an ejection or stores, rockets or seats i would place each motor into a interconnected tube system so they all feed a common pressure into the pipes and they all operate like air pistons with only the top connected to the seat.
this balances the ejection forces as pistons to low pressure and dont rely on the motors getting up to full thrust at different times.
Terrific! That's one big project just the ejector seat, but to put it into a flying Gloster meteor plane is going to be something else. Just as well Action Man was wearing a crash helmet & no doubt he'll need that & fire proof clothing in the future. Looking forward to the next step with this & great that Martin Baker are involved.
Looking forward to seeing the end result of your hard work. Thanks for letting us in.
Happy to be one of the first viewers. Watching literally one minute after you uploaded. Nice work
Congrats on Martin-Baker sponsoring you, what a kick! I love you ingenuity on this project, we use a foil heat tape that weighs nothing here in the US, Auto Parts stores sell it. Tally Ho!
Where is part 3 btw great video mate
Fun fact: pilots after ejection can be up to 2 inches shorter due to excess of 14 Gs
glad to see action man was wearing a crash helmet, perhaps he needs some fireproof clothing as well. looking forward to seeing the flying ejection.
Happy to be your new subscriber. FYI I came to your channel via Nicholas Rehm's channel.
Very nicely done
Coolest sponsor ever, way to go...
Not often you see a tinkerer channel get sponsored by a big-time defense contractor. Impressive!
(or, should I say _defence..._ pardon my Yankee-ness. :-P )
@@andie_pants MB pulled it off better than the USN, I will say
Legend has it when they wanted to test the first ejection seat (which was done full scale in Meteor for the first time), they wanted to use a chimpanzee for a test subject. The RSPCA stepped in a told them NO! So they found an enlisted man (fitter) who was 'volunteered' for the tests, since there was not Royal Society for Protection of Enlisted Men, (the original seat used a 3" (76mm) cannon shell to blast the seat from the aircraft, so they were NOT gentle! Nearly every United States Navy hangar where they work of the ejection systems for USN aircraft has a sign that reads; 'if you cannot fly United, Fly Martin-Baker!'
Nice video. But you have to be careful with one very important point. The ejection of the miniature could greatly modify your centre of gravity once in flight, which could lead to the crash of the plane
I love your video’s and every video is better! Project air is the best!
Entertaining as always.
Keep the 'stuff' coming.
One thing. Superb laser cutter, fancy equipment etc then you use needle nose pliers to tighten those nuts.
Oh no. Please use a correct size socket or a spanner (that's the ex aircraft engineer in me talking).
Keep up the superb content. : )
Epic my dude, Keep It Up! I get super exited when you post a new vid
Very interesting project, please don't stop.Thanks.
awesome vid
You should try buying extra ignitors, I think the serious rocket guys double them up for better reliability.
You're 90° away from making an airplane capable of firing unguided rockets nice work
This guy is so much like Bob Gilruth. Like Bob, he does aerospace engineering. Also like him, he's done hydrofoils.
Thank you James for inspiring me to do Aerospace Engineering for college. all of your videos are amazing and i hope you keep up the amazing work
Best of luck with it!
Such a cool project man you deserve them as a sponsor.
Found your channel via DIYPerks and I’m glad I did. Great content, great production. Subscribed 👍🏻
Waiting for pt3
Two magnetic tracks that hold the seat unit tight in the aircraft.
As soon as the ejector seat button is pressed ,one set of the magnetic track has reversed polarity and then the seat unit would be ejected at what could be a controlled accleration such as fairground rides use.
No need then for complicated seat units.
still waiting for part 3 :/
Your videos are really cool big bro...
Wanna be like you ...
Always excited for your new video
Love Your Videos
Well then, an ad I didn't skip.
