    I don't usually play these kinds of games but I tried Warrior Within and the fluidity and "organicness" of the combat got me hooked. I thought it was the future of combat and would fit great in an RPG (my favorite genre). I'm so disappointed it didn't catch on.

      I like it too. But I’m going to be honest. The freedom we had in the magnificent 3d original was truly amazing and I miss that freedom here. I still find that 15+ year old game superior. I don’t like being restricted going left to right for this type of adventure. Fun. Good combat graphics, sound etc….But I wanted to open up that beautiful world I saw behind our beloved character. But as a metroidvania type game , it’s great. But I wanna go back to the original ps3 version. Sands of Time is the best.

    I do disagree with you, the story is quiet faithfull towards persian mythology and "Shahname" it does a wonderfull job portraying persian mythos (aside the hair cuts), and the ending was quiet good. The previous pops were based on "1001 arabian nights" which has very little persian mythos in it as the name suggest. So i am quiet glad about the story.

    I'm sold.
    Given that I'm both poor and this is a Ubisoft game...there's absolutely no reason to rush into a purchase. By December this will probably be anywhere from 60-80% off on either GMG or Epic with their whole double dipping coupon sales.

    I loved the last PoP game. When I was a kid I thought the future of video games would be to play games as if you controlled a cartoon. The initial hook was the cell shaded look. Basically I just had fun with the game. I have no clue if I would like it now, but back then I liked it and didn’t go into it wanting it to be like the previous games.

      PoP 08 wasn't actually the last in the series, there was also Forgotten Sands from 2010 but it is understable to forget it as it wasn't particularly memorable.

    Honestly don’t know why price is a huge problem. People had to pay $60 for Metroid Dread. For fans of Metroidvanias or fans of PoP (or both in my case) I don’t think $50 is too unreasonable.
    If you’re on the fence, sure wait for a sale that makes sense. But I’ll take an AA PoP flavored Metroidvania over most $70 AAA slop in the current industry any day.

    2D games- Metroidvanias, platformers, souls-like RPGs (Salt and Sacrifice) rarely have have deep focused stories. They almost always follow the FromSoftware formula and use world building through lore items for the majority of the story telling. There are occasional cutscenes/important dialogue usually around major fights and/or puzzle sequences…. These are supplemented by lore in items we collect or dedicated lore items you can read in the world.
    This game follows the same system and fro what I’ve seen so far does it well. I would never expect a 2d Metroidvania to have a super in-depth focused story. It simply hasn’t been done yet. However that has had no impact on the standout success of the hits of the genre (Hollow Knight, Grime, Salt and Sacrifice/Sanctuary and my personal favorite that is way underrated Ender Lilies).
    The price point is a little steep on this game but if it has a decent length I think it’ll be worth it. Games are cheap to develop and the gameplay and graphics/art in this game is top-tier. So as long as the game gives me a good 20-30 hours to 100% it I’ll feel more than satisfied with what I spent

    • @Fextralife
      @Fextralife  4 місяці тому +3

      The problem I had with this story compared to HK, S&S and others is that its much more explicit. Other metroidvanias cant really have a bad story because they dont tell one; they leave one for interpretation within lore items.
      The story told in POP is very explicitly told with lot of exposition. This would be fine if the story was amazing, but unfortunately it just was not. As a result, the atmosphere of the game for me is hollow, and lacking intrigue or mystery.

      @@Fextralife i appreciate the response. I’ve started making my way through and I am starting to get your meaning. Just hit the first big “surprise” and it just didn’t feel like very good story telling. I am enjoying the game in general but I agree now that I’d prefer either a vague story like HK or a good explicit story.

    If someone hammered Castlevania: SOTN for storytelling back in the day they would be right but would have drawn attention to an element that would be insignificant to the overall experience. Same thing with Devil May Cry. When you play an action game/fighting game heavy storytelling should not be used to gage how impactful the experience is. If its there then great but if its not who cares. If you want deep character development and storytelling play an RPG or watch a movie. Most people skip cut scenes so they can get back to the gameplay anyway. With players nowadays having little to no attention spans why budget for content that wont be consumed. I've played so many MMO'S/Action/Fighting games where cutscenes get skipped bc they just want to get to endgame.

    If anyone really ends up enjoying this… and has played and enjoyed Hollow Knight and the Ori games… do yourself a massive favor and check out Ender Lilies next. After playing Hollow Knight it became one of my favorite games of all time and definitely my favorite 2d game at the time.
    However while exploring the related section for Hollow Knight in the Xbox store… I saw Ender Lilies and saw “Rusty”….. a content creator who rose to prominence based on his Hollow Knight content give an astounding review for the game. I knew just from the trailers and his review it would blow me away. It most certainly did.
    Today it’s hard for me to choose one over the other but I definitely lean towards Ender Lilies. It has a unique spin on the combat while maintaining the best parts of the soundtrack and

    There are 3D metroidvanias as well which you seem to forget. The best example is the original System Shock back in 1994 whose remake came out last year.
    Other than that, there’s Metroid Prime, Killing Time, Strife (sort of), Powerslave Exhumed, Dark Souls (sort of), Downward and Prince of Persia 2008.
    The Lost Crown should have been done a similar way to POP 2008 crossed with either Forgotten Sands 360 or Two Thrones. 2D is boring and has not fit Prince of Persia at all since 1999 outside the remakes of the first game and its sequel The Shadow & The Flame: Sands of Time just runs circles around anything the original trilogy did and that latter part includes Sands of Time’s GBA port which can only be excused because of the hardware it was on.

      $50 is too much for a side scrolling arcade game. Ubisoft is just being greedy. He even says he couldn't really recommend it at full price in the video. It's double the price when compared to other games of the same type. (Lol, it's basically a glorified phone game.)
      Edit: Played through the game demo last night and wasn't impressed. Basically looks like a phone game, controls are ok but not great. Boring characters and story. The one nice aspect is the game difficulty is very customizable. It's an ok game for the type of side scrolling game that it is but I've got limited time and there's just way too many other games I'd rather be playing than this.

    Torn on the price issue. On one hand, I think it should’ve been $40 as well. This is clearly a AA effort, not a AAA. It shouldn’t be priced so far above well made indies. That said, Metroid Dread released at $60 and people fumed, but that was ultimately one of the most visual striking Metroidvanias ever made - it was clear a lot of time went into it. Idk. Pricing in general is very personal. I could afford $50 in an hour of work.

Iranian people and other people of the same religion love it because it has Farsi voiceovers. I do not talk about this because I am of some political party or whatever, I talk what I see in people comments and in people that present the gameplay of the game. • @kasplat5874

    I don't really understand going on and on about the pricing. There is a lot of playtime even if you only played it once and this is the kind of game that people play over and over at harder difficulties or doing speed runs or one form or another. Sure, if the game wasn't fun because the level design was bad or the combat or movement were not great, then it might be a one and done and price could be an issue if it was 10 or even 20 hours long, but it isn't.
    The time to complain about price is some game like Diablo IV or Starfield, where you end up wanting your money and time back.

      When this game has to face fierce competition in its genre like Hollow Knight or Salt and Sanctuary, it's tough to say it's great for its price. That being said, if pricepoint is not an issue for you, you can see how we rate other individual aspects of the game at the end of the review.

    • @kasplat5874
      @kasplat5874 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Fextralife Okay, you're the reviewers and have a system in place, so fair enough. I'll just dump my reasoning in case anyone cares, but I'm not trying to cause offense...
      Your argument sounds even stranger if you're going to compare whether it is worth buying any new game based on old games. Old games are almost always going to be on sale, so a new game is almost never going to a good value in comparison; Ubisoft regularly discounts games by as much as 75%, so never buy a new Ubisoft game? Did you recommend not buying Lies of P or LotF because Elden Ring is the much better, much longer game, and is only $40? Or don't buy a game if it is single-player "won and done?"
      A better metric than cost would be something rarely mentioned, which is whether most players will even be able to finish the game or even want to before they reach the end, let alone play multiple times. I'm still sad about all the people that never saw more of Bloodborne because they quit at Father Gascoigne or Vicar Amelia. The difficulty settings on this new PoP don't guarantee someone will be able to finish it, because a player still has to deal with the platforming puzzles, which involves timing and precise aiming, but they have a better chance of finishing than say Metroid Dread, which even on Rookie mode is hard and has no currency system to let you RPG your way through the difficulty and required parries.
      Your specific examples of Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary are quite interesting since HK is probably the best Metroidvania ever made. However, many people hate its pacing and it is hard, but it also gives you the tools if you keep at it to finally get through the final boss, even if you can't finish all the extras. This is in part because it has a flexible charm system and currency to buy upgrades not tied to beating bosses. Salt and Sanctuary, which many people like, I find convoluted, and it is like that right from the start. If you aren't determined to trudge through that first zone, possibly dying over and over and even possibly restarting as you made a "mistake" in your early choices, then the game is clearly a poor value.
      The new PoP looks good, plays good, and appears to borrow some of the best ideas from other Metroidvanias while adding some new additions like pinning screenshots to the map (I pre-ordered when I saw that). Even a highly rated game might not be to a players taste, which we regularly don't find out until we've played the game ourselves, as watching is not the same as doing. Video games are still one of the cheapest forms of entertainment, but if cost is a big issue, then just never buy games at release and try not to confuse the quality of the game experience with price.

      Ubisoft _could_ tell a good story but I’m not sure about that now. As late as Forgotten Sands, all POP games they made were bangers including Warrior Within. I don’t know if Assassins Creed suffers from bad story now as I stopped playing soon after starting Black Flag and need to get back to it in order. Assassins Creed did have good stories including AC3 albeit the latter was only interesting during Desmond’s segments. Conner and Hatham were frankly boring but the frontier was super fun to explore.

    • @quintonhoffert6526
      @quintonhoffert6526 4 місяці тому

      While of course everyone can define games as they like, the generally accepted definition of a Metroidvania has little to do with fast paced action or combos. Generally, on r/Metroidvania, the given definition is a game that is usually 2D, features a sprawling open world that is gated by ability locks (i.e. you need the hookshot to get through), and the abilities you unlock are mostly or entirely movement upgrades. The core fantasy is that you start with a basic move set that expands over the course of the game, eventually allowing you to move extremely quickly and fluidly through the world.
      Under this definition, Salt and Sanctuary fits. You start with a basic Souls-like move set but you eventually unlock various movement abilities that allow you to progress through a world that is gated by ability locks. It's the trope codifier of the Soulsvania, which is the Metroidvania world and ability design married to Souls-like combat and, often but not always, quest/NPC progression.

      It started in the late 80s on Apple II. The original trilogy prior to Ubisoft’s games in 2003 is best described as “realistic Super Mario Bros” or “Tomb Raider in 2D”: you can run, jump, climb & swordfight while dodging instant kill traps and there’s no scrolling, just screen flipping.
      The plot is an evil Vizier named after the good vizier Jaffar from 1001 Nights (predating the other villainous one in Disney’s Aladdin by several years) standing in for Koopa and the Princess has no name, similar to both the Prince and her father. Unlike Mario your time limit is 1 hour and it lasts the whole game instead of each level. You have infinite lives but unless you save scum (as in load an actual save file) the time limit doesn’t reset when you reload after death.
      Prince of Persia: The Shadow & the Flame is basically realistic Mario 2: The Lost Levels and you get 75 minutes to beat it which you need.
      Prince of Persia 3D in 1999 is a clone of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation except it’s full of bugs (especially on modern systems) as they didn’t have time to fix any before release deadline, frankly blizzare & stupid architecture the biggest offender being a massive bamboo technology blimp halfway through the game (where incidentally the best levels but also 1 of the buggiest take place) and story is frankly stupid.

    I could understand most of your viewpoints but don’t really don't get the argument with the price and how there are other similar but cheaper games.
    For Metroidvania fans, chances are they’ve already played the games you’ve mentioned and just want a new Metroidvania even though it more expensive than the ones you’ve mentioned. 20 - 30 hours is actually pretty good for games of this genre. Some had the same problem with Metroid Dread which is $60 and much shorter playtime but ended up being well received by both fans and critics alike. Maybe you can chalk it up to Nintendo fans being used to those prices for all their games and are obsessed with their IPs but it wouldn’t have sold well if the game wasn’t actually good and if everyone thought there are other similar but cheaper games out there.
    This game costs more as games made by bigger companies usually have bigger production costs. Hope this game sells well so other bigger studios are more open to getting into this genre. Indie devs are still going to make and sell cheaper Metroidvanias regardless. Both Indie and AA/AAA Metroidvanias can coexist which is a win for the fans of the genre.
    Also, there are not many good Character Action Side-scrollers so this a welcome addition for people who lean more into that side (me xD) . I can only think of F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch and Magenta Horizon, which is still in early access, when it comes to similar games. (Please give me game recommendations based on these two games if you know any)
    People only associating game price with hours without considering other factors is how the industry ended up being filled with 50 hours (minimum), soulless open world games with copy pasted and meaningless content.

    • @Fextralife
      @Fextralife  4 місяці тому +1

      Given the nature of a review, its only natural to draw comparisons with other games in the genre, regardless of whether they have been played to death or not, so a comparison of price is inevitable. Nevertheless, we know that for some people price is not that important, and that's why we include multiple score categories at the end so you can focus on aspects that matter most to you, such as gameplay or story.

    Using price point as a grading criteria for a game is kinda BS. That is hardly on the game developer and has even less relation to the quality of the game. I think it’s more about relating value. If a well made, content packed game made at AAA quality costs less than the now-average $70, it adds to its value for the gamer. If a shit, sloppily made indie slog fest costs the same as that AAA game, it lowers its value for the player.
