On a regular basis I am asked, which watch is the best luxury watch - the Rolex Submariner or the Omega Speedmaster? These are two of the best and most popular watches of all time, and if you're looking to buy your first luxury watch you can't go wrong with either the Rolex Submariner or the Omega Speedmaster, but if you have to pick one I'll share my advice on which one you should consider.

    Thanks for watching!

Correction: I mistakenly quoted the Speedmaster date of production. I was thinking of the original lemania cal 2310 movement that the Omega caliber 321 chronograph movement is based off of, which was developed in 1942. Mixed up my dates, sorry!

Totally agree with that observation. In today’s mad consumer world, many so called ‘watch enthusiasts’ are just speculators, some simply have too much money and time on their hands (pardon the pun). Some are fickle minded and so easily distracted and more excited by the zillions of buy/sell opportunities than owning a great watch. The watch is just a means to and end. That honest hard working guy saving up the pennies for a coveted gem they will keep for life is a rare breed these days. By the time they’ve saved money to buy the watch. The price has doubled and they are at the back of the waiting list because of the grey market and these wheeler-dealer speculators who think a hair spring is another name for curly hair.

Exactly. Whilst you want a watch that retains it's value it has to be a watch you want to wear.
Frankly the Seamaster does it for me. I'm not a Rolex fan, too much baggage, but do want a watch with caché, beauty and wearability. Omega does that with the Seamaster.

Other than the fact they are both iconic steel tool watches for their respective brands, these two watches shouldn’t be compared to each other. Their differences far outweigh their similarities and invite a totally subjective preference:
    Chronograph vs dive watch
    Hesalite vs saphire crystal
    Aluminum vs ceramic bezel
    Matt vs shiny dial
    $6000 vs $9000
In fact they are so different that any watch enthusiasts should really aim to own both.

My Omega Speedmaster was given to me as a BD gift at the end of July,1969 just ten days after Buzz Aldrin wore the first watch on the moon, a .321 cal. However, mine is one of the first .821s made. I believe it was made in the Fall of 1968 or early winter 1969. I've had it "tuned up" by Omega in N.Y.C. sometime in the later 80s or so. Omega replaced the sweep second hand because the green paint was flaking off the hand. Omega also replaced the Hasilite crystal with a harder plastic shell. They also gave me a more updated wristband and new "pushers" with seals. This was all done for $300. The watch cost about $275 with an employee discount at the time, go figure. Nobody expected the watch would become an icon at the time, but Omega did return to me the older crystal and pushers and a few chain links. Otherwise, the watch is a pre-lunar landing Speedmaster. It almost looks brand new today and I wear it all the time. It does seem to run slightly slower, maybe a minute or so ever two days, but who cares? I just reset it when I wind it up in the morning. I've never taken it in the water. I'm not sure if the older ones were water-resistant but I think the newer ones. I love my Speedmaster, I can still read it without glasses. I too hate watches with so many complications you can't read them.
BTW, as a general aviation pilot since 1969, I used to use the Chronograph to time checkpoints during cross country flights. So I got a lot of use out of it growing up. Today, we use GPS and rarely use "ded reckoning"(it is a misnomer to use the term "dead reckoning" for the original term "DED" reckoning for navigation purposes. If anybody wishes to question whether the term "DED Recokong' was the actual original term as opposed to the more common term "DEAD RECKONING" please look it up and tell us if the history of the term "DED" vs. DEAD" is correct. I too would like to know the answer. I believe the original term was "DED" reckoning.

Just got a Seamaster Diver 300M this week, didn't even notice the He escape valve until you mentioned it in this video. It's funny I was the kind of person who hated the valve when I first saw it on the internet. However, in person the little valve is really small and doesn't get in the way of anything. I even started to appreciate it now because it's an added function.

I sell very high-end cars for a living, so it is very often the case that the watch on your wrist will be noticed by the client. Further, time is a very important factor in what I do, so I very often use the chrono function of the Speedy just to make sure that I'm giving all of my clients their much-needed attention when working with more than a few clients at the same time. With that said, the choice of watch really comes down to what its purpose is. I bought my Speedmaster during a port call in Jebel Ali (Dubai) in 2004 during my time in the Navy, because I needed something that was very accurate for short legs of trips as a SONAR Supervisor doing SONAR operations in the waters of the ME and Indian Ocean. The Speedmaster was a logical choice. As a SONAR supervisor, I was always within a few ticks of time to the computers in COC (combat operations center).

I own and love a Speedy but there’s no contest here. Sub.
Although I will say one thing more. Owning a Speedy often says, “I’m a watch lover.” Owning a Sub, for many, many non-enthusiasts (note: NOT people like you Guy and many others in the community) often says, “Look at me!” Despite its understated, basic design, the Sub is basically THEE watch, as it were. Everyone knows it. Everyone. A lot of people like that.

I suggest that if you ARE going to buy both of these watches, then find an AD that has both Omega and Rolex, buy the Speedster and tell them you also want the Submariner. That accomplishes 2 things,
    1. You have one of these 2 amazing watches to wear right now while you wait for the other one

I do own a speedy on hesalite & sub no date. I recently purchased my speedy and i'm simply loving it. currently got it on a black aligator strap and it looks dapper. The chrono adds a bit more flavour to the watch as it makes the dial a lot more buzzier than the sub. However i do wear my sub for special occasions as it has been with me for over 3 years and it will be in my collection forever along with my speedy!

If I was a watch geek who could only have one I'd go speedy as it's an enthusiasts watch and a strap monster.
If I just wanted the best watch and had the money I'd go Rolex.
If I had a dive/chronograph already that I loved it would sway my opinion- i.e. if I had an el primero or planet ocean already I wouldnt buy a similar style.
In real life I would actually get a blue pelagos and speedy on the grey market for the combined price of a sub. The 300m WR and the chronograph are equally redundant to most normal people. The chronograph can be used as a date indicator though

Will be adding the speedy to the collection at the end of this month and it’s fair to say I’m ‘over the moon’ with idea of them as a 3 piece!! Great comparison also, by far the best on UA-cam, thanks!

Both, but in terms of durability and functionality for everyday, then the sub since the speedy is pretty fragile w/the hesalite and can’t be worn in the ocean or a pool. That being said, it’s so classic and goes w everything making it fun to change straps frequently.

Two if the most iconic watches, but beyond that, they are apples and oranges. IMO the Sub is the better 'luxury' watch, whereas the Speedy is the more historical watch.
The Speedy is like buying an original 911 as new in 2019, old school charm, but lacks the modern conveniences. The Sub is like buying a 992 in 2019, modern evolution of a classic, with modern bells and whistles, but is related to the original in name and aesthetic only.

Great video. Tough choice. Both are great ‘purist’ models within their own brand lines. The sub was designed so well, it became its own worst enemy. Due to its great design, the market is flooded with blacks subs, counterfeit subs, and homage subs from many brands (Tudor, Invicta, etc).
The sub is the perfect intersection of prestige, relative affordability, aesthetic, and versatility.
The speedy is much more subtle. Watch enthusiasts will respect it, and it’s far more distinguished than the sub. Not quite as versatile or prestigious in the eyes of non-watch enthusiasts though.
The choice comes down to your motivation for buying the piece. That will drive the choice that is right for you. Get both if you can.

Omega Speedmaster is easy to get (most models). But the problem with the Speedmaster is that there are way too many models, too many special editions, too many movements, too many sizes, Hesalite, sapphire.
As for the Submariner, they play hard to get.
MSRP between the two not that much different, but by the time you compare street prices (Rolex watches are sold at 2-3X MSRP or more), the choice becomes much easier to make. The Rolex as it is in current environment is way more expensive. That makes the Omega a much better value.

I bought the speedmaster once and returned it unworn after a few days. It would look so much better if it had a deep black dial instead of that matte charcoal grey. It's simply too plain. The timekeeping was very average as well. I would like to see them make one with a ceramic bezel, deep black dial and with an applied logo, that would be a killer watch.

I have a Sub (114060) and recently sold my Speedmaster (huge mistake BTW). Both are awesome watches and I plan on getting another Speedmaster in the near future. As far as buying advice goes, if you have other watches (especially other dive watches) just get the Speedmaster. The insanity that is going on right now with Rolex is frustrating/annoying/silly. You can walk into any Omega boutique or AD and get a Speedmaster below MSRP any day of the week. However, if you don't mind waiting or already have a relationship with an AD and want what I think is the best everyday watch, get the Sub. It goes with everything and can handle anything you throw at it. You can't go wrong wither way.

Small point of contention. I’d argue Zodiac beat both Blancpain and Rolex to market with what has become the blueprint for dive watches. I look at watches in a pretty controversial way I think. If I hold these 2 against each other the Speedmaster wins hands down. The speedmaster is not (yet?) cloned to a convincing level. I understand the aim of the video but I make two respectful observations: 1) I don’t see many people cross-shopping these two watches (based on price, features, image, etc), and 2) the Speedmaster is an intentionally anachronistic product, that has intentionally eschewed “improvements” in favor of preserving a specific thing, while the Sub is the current pinnacle of Rolex’s focus of entry level dive watch value and innovation. Comparing the new Seamaster master chronometer to the sub would be much more relevant and beneficial.
