    Monoprinting from sketches. (portrait)
    A change from the usual abstract compositions, in this demonstration I have taken some simple quick sketches and using the monoprinting techniques transformed the drawing with a variety of marks and created tone and shadow with light pressure on the paint transfer sheet.
    Working from sketches using plastic foil and oil paint. Full details and updates to follow.

    I like how the sketches are not verbatim, but modified through the process. This is very enjoyable! Thank you!

      Thanks I often get comments about the silence and it's something that I always enjoy myself when I watch other artists demos, I hope to post a few videos with commentary in future but need to invest in a good microphone and practice talking as I work.

    I have a loose, embrace my “mistakes”, mark making style, and I’ve not gotten into oils mostly because of the cost associated with them and this is exactly what I’ve been looking for to economize the use of oil paints. Thank you kindly.

    Love the way that you're not too "precious" about your artworks. I think the looseness and spontaneity makes for for some wonderfully expressive results. Probably why I love paintings by Giacometti. Cheers Dan.

      I've not really explored figures or portraiture with this technique so this was a revelation for me, the monoprinting is excellent for creating abstract landscapes and the range of textures work with certain subjects, I was pleased with these sketches and will continue to experiment, the Giacometti reference did cross my mind and I think it would be a good demo to film this process. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.

      @@DanTirels Yeah Dan, a Giacometti-inspired demo would be great. There's some old films on tube which show the man at work. So I'm looking forward to your take on it. Cheers

    I enjoyed watching this so much. I haven’t got oil paint but I tried heavy body acrylic. Not quite the same but not bad. I’ll get some oil paint. Wonderful to watch with a cup of hot chocolate. Thanks for your kind sharing, Dan.

      Thanks for the feedback. You can try a retarder with acrylic to slow down the drying time, but I find oil paint is much better, use very little paint in thin layers. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel.

    I love the idea of working 'blind' like this. Going to have a go later. I tried one of your techniques last night, I used Pro marker ink pens thickly applied to plastic and then made the marks and texture before the ink could dry. It was so cool!

    Again, very inspiring. I was thinking, if you'd put the oil on a transparent piece of plastic, say a sheet protector (cut in two fex)... Then you could more easily see the features and could sketch without guessing. Unless drawing blind is the point of the project that is... I will try both methods for sure. 👍🙏

      I sometimes like the random marks you get from this technique. I recommend just practice the drawing a few time first and use these for reference. Hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching.

    Do these sorts of methods mean the oil paint will dry quickly without needing other mediums mixed in? That confusing part is why I haven't really used oil paints.

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  5 років тому

      I use very small amounts of oil paint with no mediums added, dring time is usually 2 - 3 days

    Sir, can I use stretched canvas instead of paper? And acrylic too? Thank you Sir

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  5 років тому +1

      Canvas works well but it must be treated with at least 4 coats of gesso to create a smooth surface for this technique to work.
