The public is blaming the wrong people. I used to install steam plants and gas turbine generating plants all over the world. Power generation was my career. I can't begin to tell you how many proposed new power stations in California were scrapped. Utilities were forced to spend many millions on Environmental Impact Studies in the 80's and 90's that took years to complete. Then no permits were issued and replacement power plants were not built.
I got involved in steam turbine life extension programs to help 40+ year old units limp along for another few years. The design life of a plant s 40 years. The emissions requirements also helped terminate the building of new power stations. We have droughts here and need reservoirs and hydroelectric plants. Environmentalists and politicians nixed those plans. Hydroelectric power is green, relatively inexpensive. There's even a movement to demolish 100+ year old reservoirs in almost inaccessible locations so ''salmon can spawn''.
Every year the cost of replacing old power stations gets insanely more expensive. We are paying for the delays of the 80's and 90's. Solar and wind power help but they create imbalance troubles on the grid. Until we perfect large scale battery storage or build more hydroelectric power storage plants like the Helms Pumping Station, we are out of luck and can't store wind and solar power for when we need it the most.
PG&E does not even own power plants any more. They own the power distribution network. There are many old large capacity power stations that sit there rusting away, shut down for years. The Morro Bay Power Plant is one. The old PG&E power stations at Pittsburg and Antioch sit there cold, shuttered, and too expensive to restore are others that I recall.
The public knows and cares very little about how the power gets to the wall outlet. So blaming utilities for rolling blackouts is placing the blame in the wrong direction.
In a nutshell, your rolling blackouts were caused by militant environmentalists and tree huggers as well as inept politicians who operated decades ago with no eye to the future.

@Mister Brookes Diablo Canyon on the Central Coast was to have 10 units. They were stopped at only 2 of them. The design life was 40 years and they were finished in the 1970's. Westinghouse built them good. They pump out 1000+ Megawatts for years at a time. There is no way politicians or environmentalists will allow another to be built in California.

Mister Brookes 100% solar and wind are great ideas but technology for storing the power just isn’t here. Nuclear still is needed but politicians don’t care. Green is what gets you re-elected.

BS. We need to get away from centralized power sources. That is exactly the source of the problem. I don't want the government, PG&E, or anybody else to decide when my power can be on or off.

Issue 1: diffused responsibility. Who is responsible for making these decisions at the very last minute, people need to know if they're not going to have power.

    • @LaurieFloodTeacher

Issue 2: it is my understanding that El Dorado County was one of the first counties to have our power cut off. Why? Were we using more power then the other counties in the northern part of the state? I kind of doubt that. People need to know ahead if the power grid is going to go down in their area. I understand when there's an accident and a pole goes down. I do not in any way understand when it is a decision being made. People need to be informed. Last year, we had all the games about how the least little wind or not gave them the excuse to turn the power off. Now we've got the phony flu game plus we have the threat of losing power as well. I'm not buying any of this BS.

@@LaurieFloodTeacher Grid operators made the decision under stressful conditions. The last thing they want to do is destroy your expensive home central AC, TV's, fridge, WiFi unit, computer, etc with severe under voltage and under frequency conditions. Yes, you were inconvenienced. But they saved you a lot of money and headaches that you and everyone else reading this were not aware of.
Foothills, huh? You should have something like a Honda eu2200 inverter generator and know how to store it, run it, test it, etc, to keep your fridge cold and run a box fan. Unless half the population moves out of Calif, these loss of power problems will be more frequent. Utilities tried to build more power stations to keep ahead of demand in the 80's and 90's when I worked in the power generation field. Politicians and tree huggers caused utilities to be denied permits and here we sit without enough capacity.

Maybe relying on solar and wind wasn’t such a good idea, it can’t keep up with the power needs of the state. Don’t get me wrong I love solar and wind and the benefits of it but the technology has it’s downfalls like how to store it for situations like this.

I don’t understand why people don’t get solar. I did. I was the only house with AC blasting in my neighborhood.

by Cal ISO or bad reporting by the media ?

No extreme heat and quarantine made for AC usage to go up A LOT. That overheated the generator and they needed and emergency shut down or the generator may have blown

the California "leadership" is just not up to the job.
Maybe if you split up the State, you might be able to actually run the States properly.

The irony is that solar and wind power are unpredictable and peak at times when there is low demand. Solar and wind screws with the grid. Until they perfect battery storage on a large scale of build more Helms pumping stations to bank that excess power, we will still have power shortages.
