  • First United Methodist of Shreveport Louisiana voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church this month, but that was not before a lawsuit and a well funded #StayUMC campaign that brought the church's drama into the spotlight.

Great video! A couple of items you may not know as I am a member of FMC. The "leave" camp of FMC also created three well done videos with people from our church. We did not spend a million dollars. All funds were donated By members. Once the ads went up, the DS called our church and told them to take them down. The staff was not 100% sure who had done the ads but they did figure it out and the ads were taken down immediately. They ran for less than 5 days. The "stay" ads go up, and our DS does not ask that they be taken down. Our vote was originally scheduled by the DS for Feb 26th. He canceled that vote on "the paperwork sent to the congregation and DS was not accurate." True, but we would have happily given it to him within a day.
All this to say that what the enemy meant to hurt us, God turned to good. This process has made our congregation grow closer and serve in higher capacities. We see God's hand all over it even when it was hard. Can't wait for the May 2023 vote to finally be FREE!!
If your church is going through this process, stay the course. It is worth it and blessings are immeasurable!

Monique, I'm glad I didn't too badly butcher the story. I'm not necessarily done with it. Would you be able to send me a copy of the three videos that you reference here? Also, I'm very glad that the experience has brought you all closer. If you all could collectively choose to do so, I would imagine that you could take leadership in whatever federation emerges among those who disaffiliate in your area. I just went on a diatribe in my latest video about the obligations that privileged churches like yours have to take leadership and to equip network churches. You can email whatever resources you have to me at plainspokenpod@gmail.com. Blessings to you and your church!

Actually, I was happy to hear you say yes, we are mean. When did we become so timid or afraid of not being liked? We are to proclaim the good news boldly and without fear. Your comments were on target. Thank you to you and TJ.

You're not mean enough, is what you're saying. Marriage is from God and God has his rules about marriage....and many other things too. No Same-Sex marriages, no divorcees remarrying (the Bible says they become adulterers and people knowingly and willingly living in sin are not to be tolerated. Go....and sin no more,) No women wearing men's clothing, no women with short hair, no women speaking in church, no women wearing jewelry in church......if we're going to follow the Bible, then let's actually follow the Bible and not play games about following it. God is watching us even if we're not watching ourselves.

So the UMC has now become like the Hotel California. You can check in but you can never check out?

"Mean church" ⛪️. It's interesting the ad quotes scripture about casting a stone but leaves out Jesus saying, "neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. "

I know one of the Associate Pastors at this church, Ashley Goad, interestingly she is actually a Friends pastor serving as a Missions Pastor for this church. This is a church with a strong missions program!

True followers of Christ follow HIM, not the world. The UMC following the world back fired on them. They thought the sheep would follow the goats.

As an outsider and Christian, it absolutely defies logic the degree to which people will go in their search for justification for disobeying God’s Word.

Paragraph 2553 says it has to do with concious regarding decisions made at 2019 on human sexuality…. One of the provisions mentions bishops being elected that disagree with the current language…. That happened so it is within “conscious” to disaffiliate based on the election of openly defiant bishops.

I went to FUMC Shreveport, and also to Centenary in the 1990s. Even then one of our religion professors was prophesying that the UMC would split in 10 years...the UMC actually made it even longer than predicted. At that time the UMC already had tension between the social-gospel/liberal element (which included some of the high officials) and the sometimes extremely conservative old-time Methodists, some of whom were still no cards, no dancing, and no drinking. It's hard to believe that divorce, adultery, and fornication were once scandals, and a person could be put out of church for serious public sins. Yes, some of the old rules were hypocritical and even unloving, but we're reached a time when there seem to be no real standards at all. At some point, though, Christians have to decide if Jesus was serious about giving commands ("Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do the things I say?") or if Christianity is really nothing more than the local Moralistic Therapeutic Deism Society meeting weekly in an expensive country club.

How can I get in touch with you? I would like for you to discuss my church, Auburn United Methodist, in Auburn, Alabama. We recently took an impromptu survey and from that know that our church is at least 63% Traditionalists, even after 1500 people who are conservative have already pulled their membership. Last Monday, the Administrative Board (skewed by a liberal minister sent to our church by the Bishop to do the UMCs bidding) voted to NOT allow us to go into Discernment, even though it was the wish of the majority of the church. The kicker is the minister is as the leader of a political campaign Celebrate UMC and is well funded for the campaign. The minister who we pay, has for two years been campaigning against us! I have all info. Would love for you to do a segment. Please!!!! Patti Northcutt

Would I be correct in saying that those who wish to stay in the UMC desire a “social gospel?” The question is, is a social gospel “The Gospel”? Where do the doctrines of repentance and justification fit in the social gospel? It seems to me that anyone wrestling with whether to stay or disaffiliate might want to review what the social gospel is. Did Jesus and the apostles (yes, including Paul) preach a social gospel? What would the nice lady in the advertisement have to say about them if she considered the entirety of their message?

John, a ton of the people who are staying UMC are unaware of the ways in which the cultural left has overtaken the UMC. Moreover, most of them would be unable to distinguish between the social gospel and the historical/eternal gospel. We are trying a fourth quarter Hail Mary pass to try and educate laity that have been intentionally been kept ignorant. Uphill battle, to say the least!

More than a decade ago I attended and saw IHS draped over the pulpit. I was a visitor but told a long time friend of mine “the Jesuits are here.” I’ll leave it at that.

John: I think Methodist (trying to be well meaning) have confused social justice/ social work with teaching and preaching the Gospel. God is many things and when I speak about God, I am speaking about Christ and the Holy Spirit too. God is loving, merciful, forgiving, and…..JUST! This is the word that everyone forgets. God is a jealous and “just” God. Coming from a secular world that can be hard to wrap you head around. But God calls us to also be just. We cannot go around doing whatever we want. God expects us to live a certain way, even if we think we are not hurting anyone. Over and over Christ tells parables about separating the shaft from the wheat, the good from the bad. He tells his disciples to shake the sand off their shoes when they leave an unfriendly place. God says in the Old Testament (and Christ is with Him) that homosexuality is an abomination. (Not my words)

@Patti Northcutt, I agree with you. My pastor once preached about "cheap grace". Cheap grace is basically claiming the benefits of
God's blessings without obeying him. It is forgiveness without repentance; baptism without discipleship; communion without confession. It is human will over God's will. Anyone who claims to be Christian without obedience to Christ as Lord will hear those words "I never knew you".

Thank you It seems to me that the UMC has become a secular church. The ministry of Christ is very important, yet the leadership of the UMC want to make God in their image and go with society rather than the teachings of Christ. I look to join a church that puts Christ at the center rather than what society of today says.
