Good to see Little Brother get some much needed shine. "The Listening" and "The Minstrel Show" are two of the better albums that came out in that early 2000s era. Their album from a few years back, "May The Lord Watch," showed how late '30s, early 40s emcees could still put together very dope hip hop without feeling the need to cater towards trends, or chasing a younger audience. Andre3k needs to listen to that album, and this recent run by Nas & Hit-Boy to perhaps draw some inspiration from. I say bring on the colonoscopy raps! as a man of a certain age, who's not the 14-year-old who bought the Southernplayalistic cassette back in the days, I don't expect Andre3k to rap about the same subject matter from his youth.
Agreed! Same with De La Soul’s “Anonymous Nobody” album … after decades they made something that some call their most impressive/creative body of work, all off a kickstarter bcuz they were still dukin’ it out w the record label and all that. Seriously one of their absolute best & most creative projects, and barely got a nod from the mainstream. Story behind it is ..
@@ebinflo102 that's a very good example. I dont have that album over Stakes is High or De la Soul is Dead, but it's somewhere near the top of their catalogue.
@@MichaelBrown-ti1un Most definitely … those will remain sacred, but AN is definitely a spectacular project and I remember being so proud of them for being able to create this landmark album whilst sticking it to the label at the same time.

Phonte.......so crimminally underrated. Most likely will run circles around your favorite rapper enough to have your favorite rapper notice, but never acknowledge him
For Hip Hop cultures sake we should continue to explore what kinda wisdom comes with age and experience. I'm an older MC that still jumps in cyphers with the 20 year olds and cooks them every time. The only thing that sets me apart is wisdom and experience. My homies is all in the late 30s, 40s, and early 50s, and to Andre's statement about rapping about a colonoscopy lol I never wrote a rhyme about that but if I did one you'd get a better appreciation for life and how we as black men should take care of our health. You'd get the humor in it of how my girl would crack jokes on me just talking about it cause going through a tough time heath wise she chose to make me laugh rather then fall into a depression (she's a registered nurse now) and just so brothas know the actual procedure is easy they gonna knock you out anyway so you not gonna feel nothing so chill lol. You would get layers of subjects based around what its like to get older and Hip Hop could use that. On top of that when your of a certain age you stop chasing things and your not gonna compromise your integrity for nothing because you're comfortable being who in your are by then. The thoughts of a 30, 40 and 50 year old man that has stayed sharp through the eras are way more advanced then that of a 20 something year old. No one side is better or worse but with age comes alot of wisdom. Shout out to Little Brother they in my top 5 greatest duo's of all time. Salute My Expert Opinion.
"And I finally understand my right to choose My preacher man told me it could always be worse Even the three-legged dog still got three good legs to lose So you can stop and refresh the rules Breathe in, breathe out, let it heal all your exit wounds Something inside said that's the move And maybe today, I'll restart fresh and new" - Phonte Peace to Little Brother, Peace to North Carolina, Peace to Foreign Exchange.
Loved these brothers' music since day one. Glad they're back together. The solo releases should get more attention too. Phonte's Charity Starts At Home is one of the greatest albums I've heard in any genre.
I got introduced to little brother at Hampton University. When OG's used to tell me about therapy I didn't understand it at that time, but listening to Phonte n Big Pooh I realized they were therapeutic in my development going through college. Thank you two for helping raise me...
The stigma of older MCs only exists because labels made it one. They can only manipulate younger artists, getting them to fork over all of their rights, for fast money, whereas doing that to someone in their 40s or 50s would be damn near impossible. So they'd rather push the most fruitful product. By us continually pushing this trope, we are solidifying and furthering their manipulation. Let's dead that.
Man, this is the best interview the Math Hoffa team has done, and you have done some GREAT ones. I love the vibe, knowledge, gems...as a 49 year old, I was feeling all of the energy of everyone in the room.
Great convo! Kudos to Math and the MEO Squad. Shout out to Little Brother. Rap is aging and is ought to age just like every other genres. There's room for everybody especially talented artists.
I might have to watch this whole episode. Phonte is one of the most slept on mc's on planet Earth! Please watch the doc they just dropped if you haven't seen it. It's on their UA-cam channel.
Leave the world behind… words express attachments memories and impressions…with sound it’s easier to ride the wave with no distraction. no “forced” imagery, impressions, thought broadcasting…just good vibes literally
Too $hort and E40 have laid the blueprints for being poppin musically as a 50yo rapper. For some reason no one EVER mentions them when this subject comes up
Drakes Daddy aka Tigallo aka Phonte Coleman and Big Pooh absolutely are one of the most underrated and phenomenal duos of all time. Personally Phonte I think is the best from NC. And that is over Rapsody, J. Cole, Deniro Farrar and others. Glad to see they are getting love! R.I.P. Percy Miracles.
I love your podcast I watch faithfully we..we need more wutang members on the show and more 90s underground rappers...I'd love to see Redman on here too!!
Nah. Because you 40 you don’t rap about colonoscopy. You rap about the things you’ve learned. You rap about the mistakes you’ve made. You rap about family, and getting your finances really right. You rap about what you see in the culture and how you feel about where it is. There is WAY MORE to rap about at 40, actually. Because trends, the club, women and the new slang is hella limited. There’s only so much you can repeat those same themes and keep it fresh. I just think Andre 3000 has a self esteem thing going on, which is something he talked about already when he apologized to Big Boi for messing up that last tour. And, sheeit, he could even rap about THAT. It just feels like Andre doesn’t want that level of transparency though. JayZ on 4:44 talked about his mom’s evolution, I mean BRUH..
Perfect example: NAS DROPPED 6 CONCEPT ALMBUS in the last 3 yrs!!!!! Everyone can have their own perspective but this is an Art Form and there is no age limit when it comes to Art ✊🏾😤 Sorry Andre
Andre should just have said he wasn't inspired to write a full project and leave it be. Providing all these justifications don't do him well. Clearly he does write still, he wrote on killer mike new album, just not for a full album. Hell jay elect been out for a decade and aint dropped either. Just say you ain't feeling inspired at the moment and not let an arbitrary thing like age be a reason.
I am screaming at my phone "Nas did!" Nas created 5 albums in the last 4 years discussing life at 40 tasting success, but also dealing with the family and career elements that the reflection of age brings. And guess what? All those albums were dam near perfect.
I bet a majority of the people who watch this podcast dont even know who little brother are? I fell in love with their music the first time I heard them back in '05....glad to see them on here....should be a very interesting interview!
I think it would be forced. 9th has his style. I think they’ve outgrown an album full of only him. I’d take a Little Brother album produced by the Soul Council though. That would be 🔥!
Clearly, the south still got something to say. Grateful that LB is willing to stand in the gap as part of this “older” guard for hip hop culture. NC still standing up. Let’s go!
The Minstrel Show was a classic album 💯💯💯
You think the Minstrel Show a classic. Checkout "The Listening!"
Yep. Hiding place and Lovin it sent me down a rap rabbit hole I’ve been in ever since. Heard it on demand over a girl house trying to get some.
