When I was a kid, I’d strip an abandoned TV of its tubes. Had no idea how they worked etc, I just thought they were cool. I still think they’re 😎
That is because you're correct,, they are cool. Even if you have no interest or idea how they work they are just magical, and then if you gain even a small amount of theory on how they work the magic only grows. Cant say that much about a transistor... Actually no solid state is pretty magical too in it's own way, just not "electrons flying through high vacuum because one plate is more attractive than the other but only when it gets hot enough" magical
@@danmackintosh6325 I’m pretty sure I don’t have nearly as many tubes as Shango but being into guitar amps, old aa5 radios and ham gear, I’ve still got a few. And they are magical, especially in a dark room on a cold winter night, talking to someone on another continent. No wires, no www, servers, nothing but air.
I remember in the early to mid 80's dozens and dozens of old working portable black and white tube TV's being junked because folks just upgraded to new color TV's. My friends and I used to crack them TV's open and take out all the vacuum tubes to throw them at each other (yeah, dumb schitt there, but we were young kids) and smash them against the wall or out in the street. I loved the popping sound they made. I literally destroyed hundreds of them. Now I'm thinking that they just may be worth a few bucks?
As a kid it was mandatory to remove any tubes from an abandoned TV.. LOL
If I couldn't haul it away, I'd pull the tubes out 🤓✌️

$199.95 at Bullocks in Downtown LA, October of 1955. "Packard--Bell Designed and Built in the West for Western Reception". Really pretty good quality sets. I had a 1958ish slim cabinet deLuxe 21". Wish I still did. Worked great!

Never seen such a well organized underside of a TV chassis. Kudos to the engineering department at Pack Bell just for that.
I'm never easily impressed by design work . Use to RCA stuff being so- so designed I guess. If you get all the tubes from
the donor chassis and a few others will need some major time testing them all. Resurrection do-able!
Until I started watching Shango066 years ago, all I knew about Packard Bell was as a brand of cheap PCs. We didn't get Pack Bell TVs or radios on the east coast at all except for people moving from out west to the east and bringing them along in the move. I can imagine local service techs looking at them all weird and saying Pack Bell stuff didn't work east of the Rockies, but we have this nice Philco set that works around here just fine. Therefore, this set has the best chance of resurrection in LA.
Cute looking set. Dime a dozen they may be but sadly televisions like this simply don't exist out here in the southeast it seems.

The layout of the components and wiring underneath the chassis is really beautiful and elegant in its tidiness. Someone put some thought and care into the design and took pride in their work. Sadly,as Shango said this style of vintage set is very common and they usually get turned into aquariums,dog beds,liquor cabinets,etc.
it will be interesting to see part 2 of this and see what kind of picture the set will produce.
Hopefully you will be able to rehome it to someone that appreciates it as a television set and it will escape becoming a dog bed.
Looks like it came off of the assembly line yesterday.
In 1984, someone gave me an RCA set from the 1950's that had a nice picture on it, nice and bright. When I looked inside of it, it had a Sylvania picture tube that had a date of December 1973 stamped on it. It was most likely a low hour tube but there were other things wrong with it. The tubes on the tuner needed to be replaced and I could not afford them, being a teenager. Also, after you ran it for a couple of hours, the transformer started to hum. I got a couple of months out of it before I did away with it.
When I was growing up we had a 1952 TV that lasted until 1974 when finally the CRT went bad. Then we got our first color set, a Sony Trinitron KV1710. That lasted another 20 years or so.
About 1969 I was in 9th grade and started fixing old B/W TVs. Rode my bike up to the drug store to test tubes. Unfortunately we shorted a few.
The CRT date code is the 34th week in 1957, '67, '77, etc. That was a common format for dating and its still used today.
Packard-Bell didn't make their own tubes so an original CRT isn't impossible. Most likely it's a replacement.

This one I really think you should try to make it work. I think it is worth the time. Never seen one of these working. Wish I had one. I think it would be a worth while adventure and it looks to be in much better than previous restoration or resurrections. I hope you will get it working. It came from a shop which might had it working but the owner did not want to spend the extra to fix as the owner was most likely convinced to purchase a new one the shop sold back then. That happened to my parents, the labor cost was the big issue and the discount given to get a color set was the final call.
That thing is nicely built and in beautiful condition. I am looking forward to seeing it come to life.

What a balanced pattern displayed on underside. Some things just look the way they do no matter how they work. Realizing the value in what seen, gives any [good] reason to see what it can do.

Ashame to make any TV like this one into a dog bed! I love the style on these old console TVs. Even if the CRT is dead, as long as the wood case is refinishable and all the exterior parts are present and in decent shape (like this one), its worth saving (to me) as antique furniture/conversation piece. If they all get turned into dog beds, sooner or later, complete ones won’t exist anymore.

The flies sound like they need Pepto-bismol or maybe a dose of Ivermectin. Love how well laid out the underside of the chassis is on this, beautiful to work on & if the xfmrs are good + bulb comes back around it'd be an easy restoration candidate. Especially with the midget-pr0ne lexy segs (or glue them to a broken Crosley Cruiser and list it on ebay using the term Dansette legs and turn a fat profit)
What they need is a good dose of crape erase.
The legs should make this TV look nostalgic. So should the knobs. This is definitely worth a recap job. I hope 🤞 the CRT is not too high-hour. Those yokes sure deteriorate over time. It means the “tire” will be conductive. I like the circuitry. Sounds like ya have to give this all new tubes. Your friend, Jeff.

My favourite videos of yours are the ones just like this, old 1950’s B&W resurrections. It’s sad to hear that these sets are still being trashed or repurposed. No doubt, the new technology is very impressive. I just like the old stuff.

Shang I can't wait to see you bring this set back. My theory on why it was taken apart and left for dead is how many color sets were out there in 1973, maybe they brought it in for some kind of trivial repair and just swapped to a color set when they got the bill.

This is what I was thinking. Hold onto it and wait for a roached chassis to come along with the tubes still in it that can be harvested. Already had one! Should have known.
The bug zapper cuts were appropriate because I just ordered a couple blacklight tubes for a 15 watt zapper found in attic. Mosquitos are bad around here. I read some study online that they might be more attracted to 520nm green light, so will try using an LED in that spectrum along with Co2 bait to lure them into their demise.
They have videos on UA-cam that put screens on the backs of box fans and have them run all night. Then, they spray rubbing alcohol on the screen in the morning to kill any remain mosquitoes before brushing them off.

There's nothin' like the aroma of fryin' bugs in the morning. The only tv I've ever acquired that had all the tubes missing was a 7" Firestone tv at a flea market. I didn't do anything with it and eventually sold it.

I’ve come across these style of sets that were stripped out, and thought about putting a flat screen in it. I would put it behind the plastic and glass so it looks as much like the original set as possible.
If you don’t restore it making wall art of the electronics on the chassis bottom would be cool.
I’m wondering that if they were still using the set in the 70’s that they may of just decided to get a new set, even if it was fixable.

I use to have some of those tubes, I cant remember if I do anymore.

It would be cool to get one of these chassis, strip it and send it off to be chrome plated and then adorn it with brass adornments and decorations, and reassemble.

I would part the chassis out before throwing it away. Transformers could be used for a tube amp. High voltage ceramic disc caps, terminal strips, potentiometers, wire....

Maybe they replaced the CRT and blew the money on that, and the CRT was bad out of the box and then they decided to abandon the effort. One would certainly not expect the Sylvania CRT to be bad out of the box, but anything is possible.

Why did all companies mark the chassis with the tube numbers. I got a electrohome made tv missing the back with the tube chart on and all the tubes where removed no clue what tubes went there

Was Packard Bell, in the era of your TV, good stuff, or had PB gone to cheap junk like their PCs toward the end of their existence?

They were pretty damn good from what I can gather, if I hadn't heard it said here before then the beautiful layout and lead dress are a big hint that this ain't no Philco.. By the way, I'm watching/typing on a PB laptop that I bought new in 2010 for just under £300. It's led a rough life, it's on it's 3rd keyboard now, battery holds zero charge & one screen hinge is snapped off but all things considered it's not IMO cheap junk. Not that any low-budget laptop built in this century is a paragon of durable quality, but it''s survived pretty well all told.
Good. In fact, almost every 1950s era BW set was good. Intensely RCA patents. Literally the whole television manufacturing industry was respectable until the Printed Circuit Board era.
PB was good stuff even up into the Teledyne ownership era in the late 60s or so. In the west we knew PB stuff to be good performers, easily serviced and backed by a good company right in LA. Sure times changed and the later PB stuff was sliding. Name sold off and used of PCs as you mention.
As said, they were decent to good quality back in the day. I became aware of the brand when some neighbors had a 19" late 60's PB B&W set when we first met them, they would eventually replace that old B&W with a new color set the same size in the mid to late 70's.
That said, they stayed decent quality through at least the 70's. Sadly, the name eventually got sold off and became a lower end brand selling low end PC clones through the 1980's and by the mid to late 90's retreated to Europe and left the US and the same with AST computers). My Dad had bought one of the last US sold PB PC's in 1997, a Pack Mate PB SFF desktop (non tower) that had a 120MHz Pentium processor, but the motherboard went bad under warranty and he sprung the extra 50 bucks and upped it to a 200Mhz Pentium and he would pass on in 1998 and that PC became my mother's and she held onto it until 2005 when I spent all day Saturday trying to get it back in good running order (Windows 98 and old drivers, and PB no longer in the US), had me pulling my hair out and the next day, Mom and I went and replaced it with a mid level eMachines box that I still have after her death in 2012, but it's not my main computer these days.
