    I’ve been a subscriber of Glen’s for a long time. And I’ve bought seven or eight different hammers, tongs and punches over the years. I can tell you that no other tools get used as much as they do in my shop. Go to his website and buy something to help support him. He is a hell of a guy and makes quality tools that you will cherish.

      Love Glens tusk tongs, have two pair 10 mm apart in size but have resized both to fit my needs as they change,
      as expected rivets need retightening and away you go! Have made Glen style tusk tong extenders from rebar , not extensions but tongs to hold Glen’s tusk tongs as I find his reigns a little short, but adapt and carry on is what we do!
      They do work, and surprising so well, just have to fiddle a bit with fitment and adjustment to suit your need!
      Enough praise, Glen does have unusual take on tongs that make his work unique, like it or hate it it’s quality work!

      Hi Jeff, For holding flat stock, this tong is certainly fine. Not sure how it might suit farrier work. I will try to improve the farrier aspect of this style. My simple vise fullering tool is better than it seems at first glance. I use my own a lot. Thanks.

    Hey Glen,
    Thanks or making the video!!!
    Those tongs are good looking I agree with you on making the jaws shorter and closer to the pivot of the pin. But besides that I would say they are awesome and definitely function able. They are suitable to shape shoes while working on a anvil. The one comment about them being useless and not able to fit to a horses foot I don’t agree with. I think that maybe this was confused with a pair of hot fitting tongs that are used to burn the shoe onto the foot once shaped to the foot on the anvil. That is what we use at work and other farriers we work with use as well. The ends are pointed and fit into the nail holes to hold onto while burning shoes to seal the foot and get a proper fit. We use two pairs, your tongs to shape a shoe like you made, and another to hot fit. The tongs you made can definitely be used to make shoes and shape a premade shoe on the anvil as well. Thanks for taking in your audiences interest and making a video! Great work look forward to seeing what else you do here on your channel!

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 роки тому

      Yeah, I think that comment was directed at this tong being a hot fitting tong, which it's not. I will complete my latest farrier style tong soon and try to get the jaws and pivot closer for sure. I'm also curious to see what I do next! With me, you never know... Thanks.

    It always amazes me how much experience can get you out of a "problem" in such short time. Just a little work in the vice and you had it dialed in. Little squish here, little tap there and tada... done deal.
    Thanks for the vids G!

    • @gstongs

      I have a lot of "problems" to work out! I will try to improve the jaws on this style in my next video and after all these years, there's still tons to learn. Plus, I seem to forget stuff I don't frequently do easily these days. So your kind comment is appreciated. Thanks as always my friend.

    Hope you read this in time. Chanthu may provide some 'blocks' or 'stumps' of a dense hardwood. Hook a trailer up to your bike and scout one out after the roads are deemed safe for traffic. Not wishing any bad karma from the typhoon, but I think that the opportunity will be good. Be careful.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Stan, You literally read my mind. The other stumps I have were salvaged after typhoons but taking any wood from downed trees is basically illegal here so I had to do it on the down low. However, I recently "acquired" a suitable solid block though I don't know what kind of wood it is. Let's see what mother nature brings... Thanks.

    Hey Glen - not sure if Ive ever seen a video of you forge welding. Does your forge get hot enough? I could be totally wrong with all the videos I watch and I just don’t remember you forge welding but anyway I’m a new smith and going to try forge welding for the first time this coming weekend. Would be interested to see a video on that from you. Thanks.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 роки тому

      Hi Pat, I do have two or three videos where I forge weld - small projects only and single piece items (not two separate pieces) as I remember except for a tong blank one. Forge welding is difficult in my small gas forge and given my setup, I really dislike forge welding here. I would look them up and point you in that direction but I think you'd be better served watching others for this. Good luck in your forge welding. Thanks.

    Can you share what type of preservative you use on your vice and other tools? I live in the humid south and all my hammers, vice and anvil are always rusting.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 роки тому

      Just daily use helps keep rust at bay. I also periodically spray my tools with WD-40 and that also helps. And draping with an oily rag really helps. On some days, rust can happen overnight. I'll show a bit about that in a video. Thanks.
