      'The Martian,' 'The Last Duel' and 'All the Money in the World' were all great. But one of the issues with deciding to shoot on digital is that it gives his latest films a cheap Netflix streaming movie look, especially for period pieces where it just looks like actors doing cosplay compared to when he used Kodak and Eastman anamorphic 35mm which made his films look like professional cinematic studio movies that were must-see "event cinema."

      @@peterpetrov4809 Kingdom of Heaven was shot on Kodak Vision 2 500T and Eastman EXR 50D, not on digital, that's why it manages to avoid the cheap, actors-doing-cosplay look. For Prometheus and the sci-fi genre in general I think digital actually really suits the genre very well to give it that futuristic and clinical look (Oblivion, Tron Legacy, Blade Runner 2049).

    Even though the original Gladiator was also a sword and sandal crowd pleaser. It felt more grounded in reality with good setups for the heroes, the villains and the stakes at play. There was more to the film than watching Russell Crowe have cool fight scenes in the Coliseum. What made the movie so watchable and turned it into such a classic wasn't just its cool fight scenes. The motivations of all the characters, be it Maximus, Lucilla and Commodus was also written extremely well. Maximus, being the hero of the story was motivated by revenge for the brutal deaths of his wife and son. Lucilla, realizing the monster her brother Commodus was and how Rome will suffer under his rule, conspires to remove him from power. Commodus, being the main villain of the story wanted to be loved and adored by everyone but was also petty, vindictive, murderous and incompetent at ruling. This all made him a compelling antagonist to root against. We understood why he was so dangerous, and why he had to be stopped.
    The second movie tries its damnedest to repeat these same themes and story beats, but everything it did felt shallow and half baked compared to the original. Among its many problems, I think what really deflates this film is the fact that there is no central villain in this story. First its General Acacius, who is the reason Lucius becomes a gladiator after his legions conquer his new home of Numidia, where Lucius's wife was killed. The problem here is that Maximus's family was murdered under Commodus's orders out of spite. This gave him a strong motivation for revenge. And while Acacius was responsible for Lucius's wife's death, she wasn't killed out of malice, but in self defense. Then there's the fact that Acacius is married to Lucilla and is actually a good man that doesn't really deserve to die, while the "true" villains of this story were the two emperors, Geta and Carracalus. And while these two despots were shown to be sociopaths, they were nothing more but a pair of Saturday morning cartoon villains. We never get the sense of why they should be removed from power. Even though they are reported to be unpopular and corrupt, it didn't actually look like the city of Rome itself was suffering under their rule. Besides seeing a lot of beggars lining the entrance to the city, we didn't see any mass poverty or mistreatment of the citizens in the city itself that would signal to the audience why they have to go. Then again they served as nothing more than a plot device for the "true, true" villain of the movie, Macrinus to seize power from. He starts out as this film's Proximo, but quickly becomes a Little Finger-esk schemer and social climber with lofty ambitions. But just like the rest of this film's rogue's gallery, wasn't very compelling, not to mention his antagonism towards Lucius felt just as boring as the others.

    Ironically, I found the fact that Pascal *does* look like a Spaniard distracting. One of the things I had to work through in my mind for the first one was "Russell Crowe doesn't look Iberian, but this was before Moorish invasions, Jewish assimilation, other genetic drift. Besides, the Roman actors are always Brits, never Italians" But now I was thinking about how the swarthy Spanish features just skipped a generation and also the dilution of only having one Spanish parent

The whole back story of lucius just felt so contrived and although i rate Mascal as an actor he lacked the same screen presence and aura crowe brought with Maximus.

    I wouldn’t call it boring. It was certainly entertaining. Paul Mescal however was terrible. He had zero charisma and is a very poor actor. I liked Denzel and Pedro Pascal’s performances and some of the battle scenes were cool despite dodgy CGI. It’s not a patch on the original and Russell Crowe was a million times better than that laughably bad Paul Mescal. No idea why he’s getting all these Hollywood roles. Obviously it’s a Ridley Scott film so don’t expect any historical accuracy and the writing was nonsensical at times. 5/10

  • @thetalentof
    @thetalentof 3 дні тому

    Ridley deciding to shoot 'Gladiator 2' on a digital camera for the sake of convenience makes it look like a Netflix streaming movie with that actors-doing-cosplay look compared to the gorgeous cinematic visual quality of kodak and eastman 35mm used for the first one where it actually looks like a professional studio movie from the big 5 (I watched them back to back as a double bill). The other letdown is that you don't really end up caring about any of the characters so you're not that emotionally engaged in the story unfortunately. Crowe, who has a magnetic screen presence, actually looks like a regal war veteran / Roman general rather than a guy you would see down at your local gym and his performance manages to provoke you emotionally. The first 2 minute entrance alone into the colosseum before Maximus instructs the gladiators to stick together just for sheer thrill-factor, soundtrack, tension building..etc from the first one is far better than the entirety of Gladiator 2 (5.5). Ridley is great when he has a good script to work with (The Last Duel / The Martian) but his directorial style can't elevate a lacklustre script in the same way that someone like Spielberg can.

Gladiator 2 is an extension of the first and a fresh new breath of life into the now saga...
    both films stand on their own and both are incredible, Gladiator II is the best film i have watched this year and i loved Dune 2, in fact the only things i would critique is some questionable CGI in a certain scene, aside from that i loved every second of it & it pay massive homage to the original.

    I thought this was pretty good for a sequel to Gladiator, the action and violence is great, Denzel Washington is great and Paul Mescal is great with what he was given but no character has a back story at all that makes you care for them, it tried to kill off so many characters fast toward the end it didn’t feel like there was any stakes, I think Denzels character should’ve festered in high society Rome for longer to build up the finale of the film more. 7/10 for me, nowhere near as good as the first but a decent popcorn film

  • @barbiquearea
    @barbiquearea 4 дні тому

    I can't agree with you more about the screenplay to Gladiator II being lazily written. Its as if Ridley Scott didn't put any effort into writing the script and probably did get ChatGPT to do it for him like a kid who is too lazy to write their own book report that's due the next day. I'm no script doctor, but the way I would have improved the story would be to pull from real history. For example, maybe like the first film, at the very start of the movie they could have given us a wall of text to explain what happened since Maximus's death. Maybe, just like in real life, Commodus's demise created a succession crisis, which resulted in the Praetorian Guard auctioning off the position of emperor to the highest bidder. How about in this story, it was Septimius Severus and not Julianus who bought the throne, and ever since they took power, he and his sons, Carracalus and Geta have made corruption in Rome get even worse.
    Perhaps we could have been shown how much worse things have gotten since Commodus's death with the city now suffering from growing wealth inequality, a rise in poverty and terrible standard of living for the average citizen. This bleakness can be by shown with Roman citizens dressed in rags, lining up for bread while rich senators are passing by on their palanquins, and some of the destitute can even be seen selling themselves or their children into slavery to clear their debts (which also happened in history). Maybe have some of these indebted slaves be used as cannon fodder in the Coliseum. This can explain why the two emperors are so unpopular, and why Lucilla and Acacius are plotting to overthrow them. You could also make the Praetorian Guard another source of all the corruption and mismanagement by explaining that under the new regime, they only grew in power and have been getting away with all manner of abuses such as shaking citizens down, while the emperors do nothing. Maybe we should have that epic battle in the end where Lucius takes up command of Acacius's legionaries and they defeat the Praetorian army and kill the two emperors, thus freeing Rome from their oppression. I would also make it so that Lucius reveal his true identity in the Coliseum like Maximus did, and the emperors try to assassinate him as he has become too popular to kill outright. Maybe this revelation could also be a rallying point for the citizens of Rome to start rioting, and for the army to march to his behest, unlike in the movie where he kept his true identity a secret and everyone was sure he was dead.
