Alright, so my definitive, non "gotta make a catchy UA-cam video" take on Zelda games. Many people have made similar videos in the past, so I wanted to bring some fun to the table instead of reciting a lengthy dissertation about what defines Zelda as Zelda.
Numerous elements contribute to the essence of a Zelda game. You've got the linear game design, the classic habit of smashing pots and slashing grass to find rupees and hearts, the adventure through various (usually around eight) elemental dungeons, and the acquisition of items that solve specific puzzles in those dungeons or the overarching story-And, of course, we can't forget the cliché of Link starting as a small-town nobody to the hero of Hyrule.
Believe it or not, the list goes on and on.
While these aspects are indeed the pillars of a traditional Zelda game, I don't think they alone define what makes a Zelda game a Zelda game.
I removed this from the video's script (I kinda wished I hadn't in hindsight), but Miyamoto once mentioned that "Zelda games are meant to make players feel like they're exploring a miniature garden."
And when I think of a garden, I envision a diverse ecosystem teeming with life, from birds soaring through the skies to worms burrowing beneath the earth.
All the flora and fauna found in a garden begs exploration. And walking through one feels like embarking on a mini adventure, and that's precisely what I believe a Zelda game encapsulates (I hope I conveyed this clearly in the video's conclusion).
While the checklist of Zelda must-haves holds importance, the immersive journey into the core of the Zelda universe, found in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, truly defines their Zelda essence. I hold deep affection for titles like Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess, but the drawback is that walking through those games always feels familiar.
And in contrast, with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, each playthrough and leisurely stroll through those enchanting worlds promises to unveil something new, providing a unique adventure every time.
    They are Zelda games.

Let’s be real here though, Nintendo has been trying to reach closer and closer to the concept of an open world for the Zelda franchise for years. The whole thing that defined Zelda wasn’t really it’s story or plot, but rather the idea of making discoveries and traveling around a fantasy setting while playing as a one wielding a sword and solving puzzles. That’s it, that was the idea all the way back to the very first Zelda game. Totk was what the creator was striving to create from the very beginning. Totk and Botw are very different from the older games in the Zelda franchise, that’s a reasonable statement for sure. But it’s only because they are evolved and improved ideas of what they had before. The point of evolution is the idea of something changing and growing from their previous selves into something leagues better, and they’re definitely not going to look the same way they did before evolution to the point that they completely changed, but regardless it still is that no matter the argument. As someone who played every 3D Zelda game starting in 2003, botw and totk still felt like Zelda games to me, even though they looked extremely different, they still had the same charm that I grew up with. Sure Botw was a little lacking on that front but it was definitely still there, but totk knocked it out of the park for me.

OG The Legend of Zelda (1987) is still one of my favorites at least in part because it was open world. Tackling the dungeons in any order then playing through the 2nd quest was magical! When botw came out I was enthralled once again with the freedom and totk is just the next level, it's crazy! 😮

Honestly I love the open world based Zelda… the story is still there you just have to look for it which is the basis for the game… go on an adventure and explore. Obviously the classic linear approach worked well but now with the expansion of data and gameplay why not make it something where you can get sidetracked for hours enjoying the game regardless. If they went back to old school method I’d love it either way but I’m definitely not mad at them broadening the game.

Botw and totk DO have a green tunic just unlike traditional Zelda games you have to earn it and the of the wilds set it’s imo magnificent it’s the best looking behind the of the hero set which is the og and it’s bc it’s 100% a call back to it as botw kinda is to the og game.

Another comment here, but you could argue that the instrument isn’t an object in this game, but rather the instrument is in atmosphere in the area around you. A lot of people out there so consider nature as a form of an instrument in of itself through noises that are made by the crickets at night, the winds that howl in the mountains, rustling of the trees and other sounds that kinda have a rhythm to them that nature provides. The hat was probably the direction they were going for, but unfortunately, I guess they just kinda did a poor job on empathizing that message.

After finishing botw, I was of the mindset "It's a good game, but not a good Zelda." While I still agree with it a little bit, I've largely strayed from that mindset because, when you think about it, didn't OoT do the same thing as botw? Made the jump from 2d to 3d, revamped the series, and changed the formula a bit. OoT was and still is lauded as one of the goats. However, this change would inevitably alienate the fans who like 2d Zelda better. Nonetheless, the OoT formula worked, so they continued with it until once again botw revamped the series and alienated the traditional 3d Zelda fans. Personally I'm a traditional 3d Zelda fan, so while I'm kind of sad to see it go, botw and totk are still enjoyable games at least (though they would be peak if they had better dungeons).
Of course we all know that botw dungeons are severely lacking, so onto totk. So far I've only completed the Wind temple in totk and, while the leadup to the dungeon and the boss were great, the dungeon itself was very lackluster. I do hope the other dungeons are better, but I have a feeling they won't match the intricate, complex, and atmosperic nature of something like Arbiter's Grounds, Ancient Cistern, Jabu Jabu's Belly, etc.
Of course there's other things I miss from traditional 3d Zelda like classic key items, companions, and instruments, but I can deal with the absence of those. The deal breaker for me though is dungeons, since that's my favorite part of Zelda. Of course I still enjoy botw and totk, but I would enjoy it that much more if they had better dungeons. Hopefully they design better dungeons in the future since they're going with the botw formula as the template for future games.

Yeah maybe my judgement is clouded when it comes to TOTK's dungeons, BOTW's dungeons were so bad (and it was the last Zelda game I've played) that the dungeons in Tears just seem like the best thing ever to me, but perhaps upon revisiting some of the older games it'd wake me up a bit, I've seriously been craving Ocarina / Twilight Princess...

So, I figure I might as well throw in my two cents here too. I'm going to put the first half of my comment before watching the video since I'm wanting to see if anything changes? Also to not lose my train of thought. First up: What I don't like about BotW, and by extension the small amount of TotK that I did play. So, again, I didn't play much of TotK before just deciding to not bother.
Everything is handed to you from the beginning, for exploration purposes. Your world doesn't open up in any way. Sure, that's the point of an open world game, but I still want to revisit places with a fresh mindset.
Inventory is a mess, too, or at least was in BotW. I don't mind new weapons, but they always broke far too quickly for my liking. I know TotK has fusions to some fix that issue, but I'm not sure if it's 100% fixed.
Shrines. I hate them. They're a decent concept, but like, the loading time makes me not want to do them. They feel confined, separated from the world. Almost like they're tacked on? Sure they serve a purpose, but I wish that it was handled better. And then TotK has them again? I understand they're new shrines, but it just...feels out of place.
Dungeons are by far one of the weakest links. I found none of the divine beasts memorable, and FROM WHAT OTHER COMMENTS HAVE SAID, the dungeons in TotK are just as bad or worse. I might be wrong, since I haven't played myself, but I hope the TotK ones at least have visual theming. Since going to new dungeons that all feel the same is just...awful.
Music. I haven't heard much of TotK's soundtrack, so this is more of a jab at BotW. The music is good, I like it, but it's not in your face enough for me to want to continue listening to it. I can barely hear it in game.
My current thoughts, before the video truly starts, are that I like the new Zelda games as games, but I just wish that they were a new IP instead of taking up a slot in an IP I otherwise loved.
Alright, I have to say that I love your conclusion. I'd say the two points I had above that could be changed are the music and dungeons. I'm still not sure on TotK dungeons yet so I'll have to play some to find out, but damn. I'm definitely finishing the game if just for the music you showed off. I do still wish the games were a new IP, or a spinoff kind of deal like Hyrule Warriors, but maybe, just maybe, we can hope for it to be just a new branch of Zelda games. 2D, 3D linear, and 3D open. Anyway, despite it all, I did still enjoy BotW, even if not as much as other people. Maybe I'll get some enjoyment out of TotK yet, too.

First of all, I want to express my gratitude for watching the entire video. It means a lot to me. I agree with your viewpoint on Tears and the issues I've encountered while playing it. In fact, if you watch my latest video, you'll see evidence of that. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the game and appreciate the immense time and effort that went into its creation. The level of craft, creativity, and ingenuity on display is truly outstanding. It's undeniably a masterpiece. However, there are several aspects that can be criticized, and I believe one factor contributing to this is the game's open-world nature.
We often underestimate how much an open world fundamentally changes the dynamics of a game. As long as the Zelda series continues to be centered around open-world experiences, it's difficult to envision significant changes. In my opinion, Nintendo should consider investing in another Zelda team. This way, one team could focus on fulfilling Eiji Aonuma's vision for these open-world Zelda games, while another team could solely concentrate on creating linear experiences that pay homage to the traditional Zelda games. These linear experiences would feature intricately designed dungeons, distinctive overworld music, and tightly woven stories and worlds with a shorter scope. Such an approach would cater to the preferences of both those who enjoy the newer experiences and those who yearn for the classics.

TotK might have had better bosses and themes.. TotK does NOT have better Dungeons and they are certainly NOT "better than sex". They are glorified "hide and seek" shrines.
Also, no secret is meaningful. Nintendo made sure that everything that can be skipped would NOT have "quality" as they cannot truly affect a Player's experience. This goes for the Dungeons and Shrines.. with repetitive cutscenes and all.
Finally, what you get at the start of these games are not "Items".. and they certainly not affect how you look back to places you've already been, Metroid style. By having all the answers from the beginning, you lose the magic of not knowing what is in store for you! Like, I don't know what.. the REUSED MAP!!
And when it attempts to give you a puzzle, it also gives you the tools to kill the mystery. Like the most memorable troll Shrine in TotK with the Fire Fruit and the arrows on the floor.
A Zelda game is more than the conveniently fitting picture you paint.
And how could it not be a Zelda game when Nintendo slapped and forced the title onto it!? It cannot not be what it was named to be.. but it sure can be a disappointment as one.

I agree, to some extent. Take a look at the pinned comment I just posted. I recently realized that all my previous comments were deleted about a week ago. But in short, what defines a Zelda game for me is the sense of adventure. When I played Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, A Link Between Worlds, and many others, what made them truly special and memorable was the thrilling journey they took me on. It wasn't just about the hookshot or the excitement of opening a chest back with fanfare. It was about the exploration, the discovery, and the immersive experience. Even though I agree that the dungeons in Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom may not be the best in the series, I still think they are great in their own right and quite unique. I believe you'll find my points in my "Stop Making Open-World Games" video quite relatable. If you have a moment, give it a quick watch. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment, by the way 🤍

The coping of entitled people will never end in the ceaseless pursuit for validation of their narrow and insecure views... I´m older than most of them (38), my first Zelda game, was THE first Zelda game, i've played many, in fact all before the Wii/3ds era... And rejoined on the Switch with BOTW and TOTK... These are through and through, Zelda games, some of the best in fact.
2 of the 3 mixed reviews from critics in metacritic boil down to that. One complains "it isnt like the old zelda games", which i can translate to "it wasnt part of the stagnant formula that almost made the franchise irrelevant with Skyward Sword"... The same low energy that would have given RE4 a mid or bad review back in the day, because it wasnt like RE0, another game that almost killed the franchise... Even tho RE4 is not only phenomenal on it's own, but revolutionized gaming at the time. The other mediocre score said "it isnt linear enough for me", which i can translate to "i hate freedom"... So no, im at the point where if someone doesnt like the game after putting a decent ammount of time on it... They are the problem, not the game, because TotK is the game of this console generation, by a staggering margin.
The last mediocre review is Jim Sterling, who justdoes everything out of spite... So this game would be a 98 (which could verywell be an overinflated score, i dont argue that), and because of 3 braindead subamouebas, it's on part with trite like The Last of Us... GTFO, suggesting a movie with some gameplay is on the same level of pure gameplay revolution...
Edit: Just checked, there's a 4th mixed score review "Great game for fans, but not somuch for everyone else"... The spite... All those 4 reviewers should get their review "privileges" tken away, not because i don't agree (i meantioned a higher score would be overinflated), but because they cannot analize games for what they are, and what they do, they're reactionary and patheticly subjective, tobe paid as professional "judges" of this media.

@@removedm Thank you for the excellent content, i just stumbled upon you channel today, and i will continue to stumble upon it intentionally, regardless of agreeing or not. You edit and lay things out like a pro, and don't use words as flippantly as i do XD.
You're correct on the side of opinions, when i said "if you don't like TotK, you're the problem", i neither meant it's a perfect game, or people should feel forced to enjoy it. But when it comes to Judges, which is what game reviewers are, one would expect a fair veredict, or you're sending an innocent to prison XD... And what Tears of the Kingdom does in terms of interactivity, and open endedness of how you approach every singular step you take... I've spent over 2 weeks not touching the story, not even compelled to, because there is wealth of organic content that even those who put hundreds of hours might never even stumble upon...
For example... I was working on an animation, and had the switch on the other screen, inside the gerudo hideout, in the "romance classroom"... Did you know, if you spend too long there, they have class for the little ones, and that's where they draw the line, where Link can hang around... He's forced to leave the classroom while the little ones attend it... I love those "unnecessary" details that ALL other game devs wouldnt even think of... Cause even me, as a seasoned player (and person in general), wouldnt think of either... And i think they have like a 3 strike rule, cause it happened twice, and the second time the dialogue from the teacher was more dire, telling me next time they're gonna throw me in a cell or something along those lines... Didnt stick around for a third time(didnt want the FBI kicking down my door for being AFK in the wrong place XD), but i can totally see them throwing Link in a cell and having to ascend through it... These ingame NPCs are more organic than some real humans who act like NPCs XD. No joke, no single Hylian is duplicated, they're all handcrafted with a phenomenal art direction... What game does that? I remember in rsident evil village, when Ethan gets knocked under a house, and sees a bunch of corpses... How the realistic graphics bites the immerssion in the ass, when they're all copy pasted corpses with the same identical super detailed face...
None of these pro "judges" did their due diligence (that may very well apply to those who give it a 10/10 aswell)... If a random guy like myself can have a more in depth experience post launch, what's their excuse to be so ignorant on something they feel they can cast judgement on... How is their blindfolded opinion of more value than actual thoughtful analysis... The truth is, the game is too good for them to comprehend, even tho there is no wrong way to play this game (statement that has never been more true in any other game), how can they manage to play it the wrong way? XD.
Sorry for the long rant XD
Keep dropping quality, there goes a sub :)
