I'd like to give a compliment to the editing style. The black background with simple logos/icons and text make it extremely easy on the eyes at night. Something that really bothers me when watching this sort of content at night is when there's no balance of light coming from the screen. I might be watching a black background for a couple of seconds that is immediately followed by a white document page that violently blinds me. This video has an almost perfect editing style which is surprising considering how relatively small your channel is compared to the others. Keep up the good work!

Re-uping the server* while taking everything down seems weird at first, but if he lets the server* expire, anyone could buy it and draw out the mystery or - at worst - exploit the interest in the website by placing malware. This way he knows for sure the investigation has hit a dead end. *half a dozen pedants made comments nitpicking that I originally used "website" interchangeably with "domain". Changed it to an even less correct term to piss them off.
On top of that one word domains are very lucrative to own, as they can be sold for large sums of money. But more likely than that, Thomas Ling is just a guy into H.P. Lovecraft who has had the domain since the late 90's and isn't willing to let it go, maybe even waiting for the dust to settle so he can start using it again.

Dude has wedding and family videos and photos on his PC (obviously a techy), wants to access things online (before cloud storage was around), doesn't need to upload anything, installs web server on pc, points domain to internet router, port forwards 80 to machine, has logins for him to access to view stuff. He is obviously technically capable, probably a developer, probably built websites for a few businesses ie dentist etc, setup all of them under his name and charges them a small fee, started getting attention from hackers maybe got attacked, PC taken down, cracks it and removes all traces of the site.

So I grew up in Sydney and I knew a guy called Thomas Ling, It was the late 90's and we lived in a suburb called Mortdale (I remember figuring out that the name translates to Death Valley and I mentioned it to him and other people)... He knew many abandoned houses and factories (there was an abandoned factory "the quill paper factory" in Oatley which was near Mortdale and he set the place up for skating with ramps and lights with generators)... The name Thomas Ling isn't rare but I can't help but wonder if it was him. edit* Oh and he was a computer wizard and that wasn't extremely common at the time

Also, the technology bubble was just beginning when the domain was first registered and stupid names for companies, websites, and products were (and still are) all the rage. Changing the spelling of the architectural term for "pocket" to something more "techie" sounding isn't that farfetched especially since 133t "language" spelling was ubiquitous in those days. It was a spamming site - There was a huge Spammer bot site that was shutdown in Philadelphia in 2011, and it ran from 1997 until that time. I believe you check find information about that being shutdown. The guy doing it had numerous sites setup for it. I only know because i used to get for multiple of hundreds of spams in any given day. I am sure it was hosting other illegal stuff, but yeah...I am pretty sure this is connected to that spammer.
1 terrabyte for a single user wasn't impossible. In 97 I worked in the Sun Life graphic design department and we had a 1 terrabyte server to which files were backed up. The IT guys secretly hosted their personal sites on there as, back then, they were the only ones who understood how it worked. Conceivably one lone geek in charge of a corporate server could easily hide personal stuff in there. These days there are all kinds of security preventing that but things were primitive back then. Data breaches were everyday occurrences.
Also for the re-registering part, i'd say this domain is cheap to register for the original guy who registered it, and it's value is growing all the time. The domain is just a "text version" of an IP address it leads to. I would not be interested about the domain, but the contents of the server it leads to. Safest way to host something you don't want public awareness to, is not to buy a domain name at all, but to use the server IP as your address, because you only need to have domain name if you want easier access to your server.
I have no idea how page source would reveal the size of files that aren't directly linked in the source or in files referenced by the source such as JavaScript. The terabyte thing doesn't seem like it would be true because of this and the fact that it was before 2000. The original Google was hosted on a drive of less than 30gb when it was at Stanford...
Remember nobody started pen-testing the site until 2010. That's 13 years of accumulated script-kiddie warez they'd theoretically be seeing, not how much was there in 97. As for if it's possible to do, many browser dev tools have supported the ability to expose storage info about a website, so it's not outside the realm of possibility

In a lot of ways, the threads involved read like those IT help threads you find when trying to troubleshoot a problem, where first you get pages and pages of bad suggestions, followed by the OP going "nvm I figured it out" and then locking the thread.

Then after a whole swarm of 4Chan goobers started creeping on his domains and trying to figure out what illegal stuff he was using them for, it would make sense he took them all down at the same time, for the same reason. This video tried to make it sound like every website on this domain hosting platform with a registered owner of "Thomas Ling" is associated and owned by the same person, but that's just not true at all. Public domain records, most likely. They may have been able to get some info off of the hosting service. I vaguely remember being able to see the registered drive sizes back when I worked for a domain host years ago.

@Matt Well, ok, my only reason to think it's plausible is that at or around this time, *if* this server hadn't ever been updated in its software, then it could've been running a version of an Apache web server that had still had some of those old exploits where you could've found a directory via pentesting programs that are now included in things like Kali Linux. These exploits, of course, have been updated, however if they did exist at the time on this website, it is feasible to have found a directory of some sort and probed some file sizes

And also he would have to give each individual user a name and passcode himself since they couldn't set one up for themselves. It's seems far more likely people PAID him to access snuff and he gave them a passcode and user login. Even back then limewire and a bunch of other places had literally every movie and tv show for free. So it doesn't make sense someone would pay to access what is already free elsewhere online. Which means the site contained something hard to find that people were willing to pay for.
Way late, but it's probably easier to "hack into" a big company like Target than to hack into a personal website. It is virtually impossible to break into a secure system head-on. To use an awkward metaphor, most hacks are the equivalent to finding an open window, and larger companies have more windows.

So I don’t want to destroy peoples illusions, but as a programmer I gotta say that it is almost impossible to know how much data is hosted on a webserver without being sufficiently privileged. So if somebody would have been able to gather that information, he would also know way more about mortis itself. Sounds like a proto internet conspiracy theory to me.
Mortis is genitive singular for death in Latin (as in, rigor mortis). The Esperanto word for death is morto. Mortis in Esperanto merely means "died." As others have said, mortise is a woodworking term, but that ends with an "e."
How was the login screen not hacked, with all of the talented hackers out there is what I want to know. I know a few OG hackers from back in the day; I can’t imagine they weren’t able to hack into it….
For those here claiming to be developers and saying you can't show a file list with sizes but not allow access to said files. It's trivial. Apache can be configured with htaccess to display a directory index and you can have it show file sizes. At the same time you can set the file permissions to 640. The upshot is, if someone can guess the directory name where the files are stored, say "files", they will get a long list of the files, created/modified times, their sizes (and possibly descriptions) but clicking one of the links will return a 403 error.
Assuming that the size of files found there is correct, and factoring in every detail given, I can only think of two things that may be hosted there, really: either some "exclusive" pirated movies service, or storing very illegal or questionable video content of some kind. If the size of files is bogus however, it literally could be anything.
A (fairly or not) infamous domain name is permanently chained to your identity. Do you want some goober to snap the name up for the lulz and put up pages that imply you're a human trafficker? Or would you keep it in your hands so it doesn't fall into anybody else's?

For a site to return a 404 error means the site is currently functional: resolving to some server somewhere that will respond in terms of a file's presence or absence. That's not how a domain that isn't being hosted and active behaves. What Ling was most likely doing is serving videos to people who knew the correct URL and query arguments to apply to the URL, for example /?mp4=Titanic.mp4 or whatever. Websites that get hacked for the purposes of making them host files are made ultimately useful to the hackers in a similar manner. In fact I caught some hackers doing this very same thing by realtime monitoring of web logs. It's a common approach.
Yes, exactly this! There are so many suspicions and conspiracy theories, but the Ife that he's storing movies makes the most sense to me. My dad had a friend who did that sort of thing, anytime we wanted to watch a movie we'd ask him and he'd send us a link for it.

I have a 2nd or 3rd cousin named Thomas Ling from Philly, He owns a surveillance company and has for as long as I've been alive. I've never met him and dont even know if my family has spoken to him. I do know he buys up tons of vacant land all over the US and has tons of properties, he has a lot of money, I think that's the only reason I even remember hearing about the guy. Conversations when I was younger saying "He's probably got close to 20 million" I remember he got arrested but dont think he really spent any time in jail. When I get home from work I'll talk to my family to see if I can get any information.
Why is it weird that they continue to register the domain? The domain is worth something and the person wouldn't want to lose it I'd imagine. Continuing to register a domain costs almost nothing. To me, it just seems like some person who was hosting stuff for themselves and then had an army on the internet try to break into it and come up with conspiracy theories as to what was on their private website. I remember hearing about this back in the day. From what I recall, it was a place that sold cam rips of new movie and sometime VHS screener. Movies would be recorded as soon as they hit the cinemas in the US. Then others around the world that had paid, could download the new movie, make copies on VCD or the like and start selling then on the street's.

I've had a site with just a logon screen for years, its for family photos going back to the 1870s and videos/films going back as far as the 1940's. Family and friends can login. There's thousands of sites like that. Nothing strange about that.
So the way old websites were setup, think of it like when you clickcon ny computer, open C:/, every file you dig deeper into it brings youbto the next directory, by penprobing you couod view properties and file size of website, but the actual files could have been encrypted behind a password, so whike being able to see how big, you couldnt make sense of the files. I remember they used AOL chat and uploaded the .rar files to emails and would just forward them thus making AOL mail servers host there pirated stuff. Actually it is 1024 gigabytes which make 1 terabyte not 1000 Nowadays storage devices manufacturers use 1000 instead of 1024 to increase the marketing amount of storage. For example, a 32 GB pendrive is actually a 29.5 GB pendrive when attached to a PC. This is because Computer Science uses *2 raised to power 10* to represent next level of storage. Such as 2^10 GB is 1 TB and 2^ 10 MB is 1 GB.
Actually, ACTUALLY you're technically wrong. 2009 ISO/IEC 80000-13 standard defines 1 Terabyte as 1000 Gigabytes where as 1 Tebibyte is 1024 Gibibytes which you are referring. This change was needed so it would be consistent with other SI standards where kilo (10^3) and mega (10^6) are powers of 10. So storage devices manufacturers are actually correct when they advertise the storage capacity. Computers however work in powers of 2 most notably when it comes to memory but NOT necessarily storage. You can thank Microsoft for this confusion because they use the older JEDEC standard where a terabyte is in fact 1024 gigabytes. This is also why you see 29.5 GB because Windows reports data size in powers of 2 unlike most other OS where you would see a value much closer to the advertised (minus space reserved for the file system). All this is a matter of standards and conventions.

There's definitely some dark web intracacies here. This site could've been a surface web directory for dark web sites, holding files from the dark web, embedded within, like how you can post a UA-cam video on Facebook, but if you're not logged in, you can't access it. Maybe the logins were obtained only on the dark web, and this site was a way to more directly access information you were looking for, as the current directories may not have existed. This could be the Pirate Bay of the dark web. Or at least something similar. Like Pirate Bay meets Wikipedia.

I'd like to give a compliment to the editing style. The black background with simple logos/icons and text make it extremely easy on the eyes at night. Something that really bothers me when watching this sort of content at night is when there's no balance of light coming from the screen. I might be watching a black background for a couple of seconds that is immediately followed by a white document page that violently blinds me.
This video has an almost perfect editing style which is surprising considering how relatively small your channel is compared to the others. Keep up the good work!

Re-uping the server* while taking everything down seems weird at first, but if he lets the server* expire, anyone could buy it and draw out the mystery or - at worst - exploit the interest in the website by placing malware. This way he knows for sure the investigation has hit a dead end.

On top of that one word domains are very lucrative to own, as they can be sold for large sums of money. But more likely than that, Thomas Ling is just a guy into H.P. Lovecraft who has had the domain since the late 90's and isn't willing to let it go, maybe even waiting for the dust to settle so he can start using it again.

I think he did (or maybe i just watched someone else’s video on mortis because I can’t quite remember). I think the conclusion was that they had pirated movies on the site, and the rest of the domains were reserved for family. I THINK.

Dude has wedding and family videos and photos on his PC (obviously a techy), wants to access things online (before cloud storage was around), doesn't need to upload anything, installs web server on pc, points domain to internet router, port forwards 80 to machine, has logins for him to access to view stuff. He is obviously technically capable, probably a developer, probably built websites for a few businesses ie dentist etc, setup all of them under his name and charges them a small fee, started getting attention from hackers maybe got attacked, PC taken down, cracks it and removes all traces of the site.

So I grew up in Sydney and I knew a guy called Thomas Ling, It was the late 90's and we lived in a suburb called Mortdale (I remember figuring out that the name translates to Death Valley and I mentioned it to him and other people)...
He knew many abandoned houses and factories (there was an abandoned factory "the quill paper factory" in Oatley which was near Mortdale and he set the place up for skating with ramps and lights with generators)...
The name Thomas Ling isn't rare but I can't help but wonder if it was him.

Also, the technology bubble was just beginning when the domain was first registered and stupid names for companies, websites, and products were (and still are) all the rage. Changing the spelling of the architectural term for "pocket" to something more "techie" sounding isn't that farfetched especially since 133t "language" spelling was ubiquitous in those days. Dropping the "e" would have been practically de regeur.

It was a spamming site - There was a huge Spammer bot site that was shutdown in Philadelphia in 2011, and it ran from 1997 until that time. I believe you check find information about that being shutdown. The guy doing it had numerous sites setup for it. I only know because i used to get for multiple of hundreds of spams in any given day. I am sure it was hosting other illegal stuff, but yeah...I am pretty sure this is connected to that spammer.

1 terrabyte for a single user wasn't impossible. In 97 I worked in the Sun Life graphic design department and we had a 1 terrabyte server to which files were backed up. The IT guys secretly hosted their personal sites on there as, back then, they were the only ones who understood how it worked. Conceivably one lone geek in charge of a corporate server could easily hide personal stuff in there. These days there are all kinds of security preventing that but things were primitive back then. Data breaches were everyday occurrences.
This could be the case back then, but he could change the server IP address associated with this domain any time since 1997.

Also for the re-registering part, i'd say this domain is cheap to register for the original guy who registered it, and it's value is growing all the time. The domain is just a "text version" of an IP address it leads to. I would not be interested about the domain, but the contents of the server it leads to. Safest way to host something you don't want public awareness to, is not to buy a domain name at all, but to use the server IP as your address, because you only need to have domain name if you want easier access to your server.
I have no idea how page source would reveal the size of files that aren't directly linked in the source or in files referenced by the source such as JavaScript. The terabyte thing doesn't seem like it would be true because of this and the fact that it was before 2000. The original Google was hosted on a drive of less than 30gb when it was at Stanford...
Remember nobody started pen-testing the site until 2010. That's 13 years of accumulated script-kiddie warez they'd theoretically be seeing, not how much was there in 97. As for if it's possible to do, many browser dev tools have supported the ability to expose storage info about a website, so it's not outside the realm of possibility

To give an analogy: A person looks at a locked front door (of a windowless house) and determines that the owner has thousands of pairs of socks in their bedroom drawers. Either it makes absolutely no sense or crucial information was left out of this story.

In a lot of ways, the threads involved read like those IT help threads you find when trying to troubleshoot a problem, where first you get pages and pages of bad suggestions, followed by the OP going "nvm I figured it out" and then locking the thread.

To me, this is another point that makes this "mystery" less of a mystery, and more of a click-bait schill. This video tried to make it sound like every website on this domain hosting platform with a registered owner of "Thomas Ling" is associated and owned by the same person, but that's just not true at all. It's multiple, unrelated people with the same name, and some of the domains mentioned are very clearly not affiliated with Mortis at all, and still around to this day. Such as the quilting one. The video is just grasping for straws, and doing a poor job at that, putting "clues" together that aren't clues at all, just misinformation lol.

I am not clear on how the discoverer of the site determined it was hosting large files. That is a question I had from Barely Sociable's video as well.
Public domain records, most likely. They may have been able to get some info off of the hosting service. I vaguely remember being able to see the registered drive sizes back when I worked for a domain host years ago.

@Matt Well, ok, my only reason to think it's plausible is that at or around this time, *if* this server hadn't ever been updated in its software, then it could've been running a version of an Apache web server that had still had some of those old exploits where you could've found a directory via pentesting programs that are now included in things like Kali Linux. These exploits, of course, have been updated, however if they did exist at the time on this website, it is feasible to have found a directory of some sort and probed some file sizes

@@dekan0208 I feel like that is the most likely explanation because why would he want a log in and password just to download movies or shows? And also he would have to give each individual user a name and passcode himself since they couldn't set one up for themselves. It's seems far more likely people PAID him to access snuff and he gave them a passcode and user login. Even back then limewire and a bunch of other places had literally every movie and tv show for free. So it doesn't make sense someone would pay to access what is already free elsewhere online. Which means the site contained something hard to find that people were willing to pay for.
Way late, but it's probably easier to "hack into" a big company like Target than to hack into a personal website. It is virtually impossible to break into a secure system head-on. To use an awkward metaphor, most hacks are the equivalent to finding an open window, and larger companies have more windows.

So I don’t want to destroy peoples illusions, but as a programmer I gotta say that it is almost impossible to know how much data is hosted on a webserver without being sufficiently privileged. So if somebody would have been able to gather that information, he would also know way more about mortis itself. Sounds like a proto internet conspiracy theory to me.

How was the login screen not hacked, with all of the talented hackers out there is what I want to know. I know a few OG hackers from back in the day; I can’t imagine they weren’t able to hack into it….
For those here claiming to be developers and saying you can't show a file list with sizes but not allow access to said files. It's trivial.
Apache can be configured with htaccess to display a directory index and you can have it show file sizes. At the same time you can set the file permissions to 640.
The upshot is, if someone can guess the directory name where the files are stored, say "files", they will get a long list of the files, created/modified times, their sizes (and possibly descriptions) but clicking one of the links will return a 403 error.
Assuming that the size of files found there is correct, and factoring in every detail given, I can only think of two things that may be hosted there, really: either some "exclusive" pirated movies service, or storing very illegal or questionable video content of some kind.
If the size of files is bogus however, it literally could be anything.
A (fairly or not) infamous domain name is permanently chained to your identity. Do you want some goober to snap the name up for the lulz and put up pages that imply you're a human trafficker? Or would you keep it in your hands so it doesn't fall into anybody else's?

For a site to return a 404 error means the site is currently functional: resolving to some server somewhere that will respond in terms of a file's presence or absence. That's not how a domain that isn't being hosted and active behaves. What Ling was most likely doing is serving videos to people who knew the correct URL and query arguments to apply to the URL, for example /?mp4=Titanic.mp4 or whatever. Websites that get hacked for the purposes of making them host files are made ultimately useful to the hackers in a similar manner. In fact I caught some hackers doing this very same thing by realtime monitoring of web logs. It's a common approach.

I do know he buys up tons of vacant land all over the US and has tons of properties, he has a lot of money, I think that's the only reason I even remember hearing about the guy. Conversations when I was younger saying "He's probably got close to 20 million" I remember he got arrested but dont think he really spent any time in jail. When I get home from work I'll talk to my family to see if I can get any information.

Question. How the hell can you tell the size of the data on a website by a logon screen. I've had a site with just a logon screen for years, its for family photos going back to the 1870s and videos/films going back as far as the 1940's. Family and friends can login. There's thousands of sites like that. Nothing strange about that.

So the way old websites were setup, think of it like when you clickcon ny computer, open C:/, every file you dig deeper into it brings youbto the next directory, by penprobing you couod view properties and file size of website, but the actual files could have been encrypted behind a password, so whike being able to see how big, you couldnt make sense of the files. But one thing that's confusing is they said they saw code for a media player.. So maybe that wasnt considered sensitive and left unencrypted? Shoot idk, lemme ask the illiminati supervisor

Bro, you hit it on the head in the video at the end. I was thinking that all along it was a way to host pirated stuff. People back then were using anything to share files. I remember they used AOL chat and uploaded the .rar files to emails and would just forward them thus making AOL mail servers host there pirated stuff. They would make the .rar files right below the email limit which was like 25mb or something around there. The good old days of typing /send list and getting a whole list emailed to you with all the latest movies.
It would be funny if the domain owner was just practicing web dev and created his first login form.

Nowadays storage devices manufacturers use 1000 instead of 1024 to increase the marketing amount of storage.
For example, a 32 GB pendrive is actually a 29.5 GB pendrive when attached to a PC. This is because Computer Science uses *2 raised to power 10* to represent next level of storage. Such as 2^10 GB is 1 TB and 2^ 10 MB is 1 GB.

Actually, ACTUALLY you're technically wrong.
2009 ISO/IEC 80000-13 standard defines 1 Terabyte as 1000 Gigabytes where as 1 Tebibyte is 1024 Gibibytes which you are referring. This change was needed so it would be consistent with other SI standards where kilo (10^3) and mega (10^6) are powers of 10.
So storage devices manufacturers are actually correct when they advertise the storage capacity.
Computers however work in powers of 2 most notably when it comes to memory but NOT necessarily storage.
You can thank Microsoft for this confusion because they use the older JEDEC standard where a terabyte is in fact 1024 gigabytes. This is also why you see 29.5 GB because Windows reports data size in powers of 2 unlike most other OS where you would see a value much closer to the advertised (minus space reserved for the file system).
All this is a matter of standards and conventions.

This would be Impossible. The very first point of mention; The source code was read and showed that x-amount of TB of information were embedded . It’s impossible to access that info without having some sort of access . He sent forth, this is simply an internet folklore for the less enlightened. But made for a great story . My first thought was that Thomas was using the site to store personal stuff, a lot of people do that and I don't see anything strange on it. Thomas probably lied about what he was storing on the site because he didn't want a lot of strangers to know about his personal life.

I remember I actually cracked the code on Mortis back when the site was still up.
I’m not sure if I actually did though, but what happened is that my screen turned red and it redirected me to an different page.
My old device legit died after that.

There's definitely some dark web intracacies here. This site could've been a surface web directory for dark web sites, holding files from the dark web, embedded within, like how you can post a UA-cam video on Facebook, but if you're not logged in, you can't access it. Maybe the logins were obtained only on the dark web, and this site was a way to more directly access information you were looking for, as the current directories may not have existed. This could be the Pirate Bay of the dark web. Or at least something similar. Like Pirate Bay meets Wikipedia.
This "mystery" has been solved years ago. All these conspiracy videos are very stupid to say the least, making views on mysteries that are no mysteries anymore solved long ago.

You see? All it took to solve this "creepy disturbing mystery which probably has links to obscure and scary dark web stuff" was people familiar with the 90s internet and communities.
Now have fun thinking that any unusual website with little info is some kind of creepy obscure disturbing dark web activity with demons, aliens, and don't know what people make up these days. Warez communities were VERY, EXTRMELY walled communities that practically no outsiders would ever have access to. There is simply no "creepy mystery" here. Stop with this.
