I will always love how Red changed his view on hope, in the beginning hope was a "dangerous thing" and in the end... "I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope."

The "book" (really novella) this is based on was originally part of a collection with 3 others (2 of which have been made into movies) and each one had a season-related subtitle. Shawshank's was "Hope Springs Eternal"
      For reference the others were:
Apt Pupil (Summer of Corruption) made into the movie of the same name
The Body (Fall from Innocence) Made into the movie Stand by Me
The Breathing Method (A Winter's Tale) which hasn't ever been made into a film.

I've watched your reaction to Schindler's List and now this movie and I've enjoyed them both very much and that is because you give me the impression that you are both intelligent people who can follow the story and understand and appreciate what is happening in the movie and what the story is about.
I've watched several movie reaction videos where the person reacting is clueless about what's happening or offended over nothing or just talking about nonsense the entire time and half of the time i end up turning them off. On the other hand you guys are doing a great job from what I've seen. Keep it up.

@ 10:32 Using a basic inflation calculator, $35K in 1949 would be about $400K today. @ 14:05 "Sizing up" is slang meaning to inspect, or to get a first impression of someone or something in this case with Andy. Also, I want to say it's really cool you pause the videos to comment. That way you don't miss anything. Not many reactors do that.👍 @ 22:08 That's right Joy. Not only using his job as a state official to make money on prison slave labor, but to not pay ANY taxes on it too. @ 23:19 There's a line in there not on your video, but you heard Andy say, "He's second-cousin to Harvey the rabbit." That's a joke referring to a wonderful classic movie starring Jimmy Stewart called "Harvey" (1950). About a guy who has a 6 foot tall, talking and intelligent invisible rabbit for a friend whom only Jimmy Stewart can hear and see. It's a good and very funny movie you guys should watch sometime. No doubt at Shawshank they would have watched it. @ 34:19 And hiding it right AT the book of Exodus! LOL! More movie suggestions not on your video page do, "Avatar" (2009), the "Back to the Future" (1985) trilogy, "Field of Dreams" (1989), "The Hunt for Red October" (1990), and more. If you're into westerns or want to try some, perhaps you should watch/do Clint Eastwood's 'Spaghetti Western' trilogy before watching Back to the Future, so you'll understand something you'll see in BTTF! Start with "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964). I think you'll enjoy these. ✌️😎

MJoy4Fun: Actually - the novella* "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,"** which 'The Shawshank Redemption' is based on, explained that part about the wall in "Andy's" cell being weak a bit better. But - the movie had to streamline it so as to not bog down the plot of the movie with long explainations.
In the novella "Red" talks about the concrete being weak in the prison, and that crews often had to patch the walls. Also that drainage was not that good and dankness ( wetness ) added to the problem. So that when "Andy" realized that there was weakness in the cell wall ( the chunk that falls out - shown in the movie ) he decides to try to take advantage of it.
Hence the need for a poster to cover it up.
Famed actress Rita Hayworth was a popular movie star, and pin-up poster girl, of that era. The part of the movie the prisoners are shown watching ( when "Andy" asks "Red" to get him a Rita Hayworth poster ) is from 'Gilda' ( 1946, ) starring Hayworth, Glenn Ford, and George Macready.
*novella = story longer than a short story, but shorter than a novel.
**by famed, ( mainly horror fiction, ) writer Stephen King, from his 1982 book of four ( 4 ) novellas "Different Seasons" ( published by Viking Press. )

waiting behind the thick plexi shield. He sits, doesn't pick

Is that the explanation in the book? If so, I think the movie is different. When Red meets with the parole board, he says that he wishes he could talk to his younger self and tell him “the way things are”. Actually, there was some proven discrimination, though. But it was against Andy, by the judge and jury, because Andy is an Introvert, and reserved.
Red accepted his punishment as justified. Think about a black man murdering multiple people, in the late 1920's (when Red was sentenced). The fact that he DIDN'T get the death penalty in surprising, and shows that he was dealt a just verdict - and not discriminated against.

Great movie. Tim Robbines is an awesome actor. You should watch movie of him like Mystic Reaver, Arlington Road, The Hudsucker Proxy, Also you should also do Forest Gump and complete three great drama movies after Green Mile and Shawshank redemption. You should also see The Count of Monti Cristo (Like mentioned in the movie) 2002 a great drama adventure movie.

Odd how almost all the best King adaptations are not really horror films in the traditional sense. Like this one. Stand by Me. The Green Mile. I would give all of them my highest rating. If I didn't know before I watched them they adapted from King's works I never would have guessed. Maybe this King guy not such a bad guy. Except that he is a liberal. There's no excuse for that any more.

I have a couple of 1980s movie recommendations for you.
The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)
The Gods Must Be Crazy 2 (1989)
They are little-known comedies, probably because they are not from Hollywood (they were made by a South African director, and the cast was from there too).
I would love to see your reaction to these movies. Even though they are comedies, they have a powerful underlying message. And also, it is one of those rare cases where the sequel is better than the original.

Love you for uploading your experience! Beautiful, young people you are. Tell me that is not the most amazing story telling ever? The acting? Morgan Freeman? Every second is either brilliant of "just story telling" depending on whether you watch the first time or understand what is going on the second or more times. It's brilliant writing at the very highest of brilliance, imo. Thank you, amazing next generation, for even considering this story. Always love you - from the older generation before you..
