Meet The Ghanaian Women Who Are Fighting Skin Bleaching
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 бер 2017
- The global skin whitening industry will be worth more than $20 billion by 2018. But in Ghana, some women are battling the social pressure on dark-skinned girls to bleach. Filmmaker Comfort Arthur shows us some of the products and images that are marketed to women, and she tells us why society's message to dark-skinned young women needs to change.

lol, thats your opinion, not many share it.
Lighten my chocolate brown skin? And have the people miss out on it? Oh honey, no!
Yes sister, I love your confidence!
Colorism is real! I'm glad this woman found out she was beautiful the way she was. Also don't hate on those people who want to be lighter because they don't realize how harmful it is. They were most likely told they were ugly and all kinds of insults even though they are all beautiful people and their darkskin shouldn't matter it only makes them more gorgeous. 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭
Saharra M right on fam
thats your opinon, now heres mine, black skin is NOT beautiful, and no matter how many times you say it,(it doesnt make it true!!!)
@@cleopatragold4206 I wish skin bleaching products worked
@@cleopatragold4206 I agree with u
I'm definitely going to hate them. Africans are a darkskin race of people. Dark skin among us is the norm, not the exception. Hating darker skin tones is hating African women period. The act of skin-bleaching is expressing hate for all Black women. Darker skin is just as beautiful if not more so than lighter skin.
It is absolutely SAD, this is not limited to Africa , it happens in South Asia, Far East , Carribbean. Those innocent boys and girls are made to believe that something is wrong with their skin and they have to keep lightening it.
True that how I feel
Arabs have this problem too
lets chat
Yes, because colonization was world-wide, along with the ideal of 'white-supremacy' or that Caucasoid is imposed on the whole world as the ONLY acceptable thing.
So are we still colonized? Apparently.
Colourism is extreme in the whole Asia. Not just South Asia.
The Caribbean island that's it's big in is Jamaica the rest of the Carribean no.
Black women you are beautiful the creator didnt make no mistake he was pleased after he created you and as a black man so am i
This is a problem many people here in Nigeria face. A large number of people are obsessed with being lighter, they believe lighter is pure and better. Sometimes when i talk with my cousins and friends about their ideal woman, most of them gush over a light skin girl with long hair. They don't even care about the personality, how pretty she is or if she's smart. Once they see a fair light skin girl, they are completely sold.
This in turn affect many people that are darker. You grow up with the belief no one cares about you, you are constantly thinking about how ugly you are and if it was a cruel mistake you were born dark. Some family friends and aunts have told me to marry a light skin girl, so when my kids are born my dark skin can be diluted and make my children lighter and prettier. I shrug it off and don't listen to what they say but i know a lot of people can't do that and as a result become desperate to turn white while ignoring any effect the creams will have on their body.
We need more people like Comfort and countries like Ghana to stand up and speak against the dangers and effects of this deadly belief.
Jamil Mukhtar wow that's crazy
@Buddy Odell I believe it really does and especially when some church organisations in Africa are led by Europeans
Jamil Mukhtar 😭😭😭😭😭
I'm beautiful... I'm black 💙
The attitudes that allow this feel like they have colonial sources tbh.
***** Thailand isn't all of Asia though. In India it is because of colonialism as well
The arab influence is still colonial in nature
+Faizan Ali and it is already dying in many parts of the world. I'm guessing in 3-4 generations colourism will be almost nonexistent
I purchased one of these skin lightening creams years ago around 2007 and it appeared to have side effects. My skin started to itch and the label said it actually reduces the melanin in your body as it lightens up your skin. I don't remember the name of which product I used however I agree with the women at the end of the video you have to learn how to feel comfortable in your natural skin complexion.
That’s so sad to hear about Ghana skin health. Bleaching is a big problem in Africa. God bless my homeland Ghana 🇬🇭🇬🇭

The way yo comment is read it seems like u didn't he know
I love Ghanian woman, their real color and the way they are. They are unique 💖
One love from India 🙏✌
Its a sad reality, loved this...new sub
I'm a Ghanaian and I've never heard that white man saying. Is it only me? That saying is not popular our generation don't know of it.
i have never tot about of bleaching my skin even wen pple tell me i'm too dark i just take it as a normal joke. i love my skin colour its even less expensive to maintain, lolz
Respect
Naomi Benson right on sista
Naomi Benson Glad you take as a joke. I think that's their envy showing. I love my dark skin.
Healthy skin is beautiful - no matter wether it‘s black or white!
I Absolutely LOVE it!!!! I love being dark skinned. We black women need to love ourselves!💖
Dark has always been beautiful look at these ladies who take care of their dark skin looks beautiful it’s very smooth
It's so funny how this works. I have pale skin and constantly told to get a tan but why can't I have skin I was born with? Why do I have to look like a leather handbag to be accepted by society? Love who you are because I do.
Great work.
So happy people from ma place are actually starting to realize this!!!
Her skin is beautiful and I adore her speaking voice.
Great video
Those billboards are Subliminal Messages . It's telling you subconsciously that you must be lighter . Even if there conscious mind doesn't pick it up there subconscious does. That's why Commercials work! Why else would they spend millions of dollars on it? They wouldn't make commercials if they knew it didn't work
Channels like these i want to see more of.
So these women never read what the man they call Christ looked like? Hair like lamb's wool, feet as burned brass. Man the conditioning is real!
Big up for breaking taboo topics like that, I'll check out her documentaries
Im very thankful for this lady.
The thing is she is beautiful. Her skin glows. For so many Africans the shackles r still around the mind
Thank you so much for this!! But I'm having a difficulty, what of naturally fair skinned girls that are also battling with bleeching. What natural creams can I use?😭
Did she say cement water ??? Jesus Christ
Wen I heard that I was like 😳
Africans we are dark and beautiful. I would never change my skin color for anything
Yes thanks so much for this video. Actually i ues skin light cuz am fair in complexion.but can you please show me any cream that maintain my natural fairness without becoming more white?
We should always learn to accept ourselves for who we are and from where we belong.Everyone should respect themselves and accept them selves.
I love the natural beauty.
as a YT American, i find this so sad...black people should love the skin they are in just as much as YT people love theirs...
Exactly Say It Loud, I Am Black And lm Proud, The Godfather of Soul Music 🎶, Mr.James Brown
sad that these ppl dont realize how beautiful there skin is
lets chat you 100 percent right
It's wonderful to see her loving her skin. It's sad that most want what they can't have. For example, I'm very pale due to some Celtic heritage I have. I would love to be black, Indian coloured/ Arabic coloured or Olive skinned! In the past I've felt so much pressure to have tanned skin. I really damaged my skin on my hands when I was in most of my teens from deliberately burning my self repeatedly, as I felt like an outsider where all my family tan and because of the pressure from the media. Now every winter my hands chap and bleed lots when it's cold from all the sun damage and they look like old lady hands when I'm only in my early twenties
Love you skin deep no matter what color
We need the fight against weaving too... And a lot more where "black" is concerned
You have two beautiful accents.,both British and Ghanaian accent..
you are so beautiful and i am with you our black man and woman should be proud of our color
I am a Catholic sister and for my thesis am writing on skin bleaching.(1st degree) would love to connect with you Comfort.
Oh my God. I am a white guy, who likes black women and I like them natural. Please ladies. Stay naturally black. Don't change your colour for me. You'll just waste your time, money, dignity, self-respect and even my respect too. So be true to you.
By the way, I am not God either. I am just a servant.
I appreciate your honesty Comfort👏🏽 It’s so weird to see how divided black people are regarding our ethnic acceptance. There are so many people of color, men and women, who embrace their complexion and hair texture, but there are just as many, if not more, who bleach their skin and hate any wave, curl, coil or kink in their hair.
White supremacy has really done a number on us….our cultural and ethnic division is irreversible🤷🏽♀️
Yes they need to fight this and heavily fine the pushers of this dangerous product.
I hate that this is an issue in African countries and the Caribbean as well as America. But this is why I get upset when Caribbean black people and Africans speak down on Black Americans with all of our problems as if it's all on us and they don't have some of the same issues as well. I think there are certain things that are more common among Black Americans due to chattel slavery, Jim Crow, and segregation stripping us of our roots and foundations at every turn, but we're not the only ones that have been effected by colonialism. Denying pain doesn't protect you from it and definitely doesn't heal you. You don't have to be a victim to address issues either. Single motherhood does exist in African societies, marital infidelity, "ghetto" mentality, and colorism are also issues in global black communities that need to be addressed and focused on as much as poverty, job security, political corruption, and immigration. We are so much more than these issues yes but they are hurting us as a whole. Acceptance, then change and mindfulness is needed. I hope that one day these issues become so much smaller or ideally are eradicated.
your choice
nice this Africa market
My home country 😚😚
I’m glad she advocates agains skin bleaching
Fight the color bias, sisters and brothers. Dark skin are beautiful.
Darker the berry sweeter it is
I don't want to use skin light anymore cuz sometimes it makes me more white than before
I blame Eminem's bleached hair :D !
How are the legal variants of skin bleach any different from make-up?
gamhacked because when little girls wear make up they can wash it off and it will not give them
Cancer
For the Sun ☀️
Sad thing is, this wasn’t a thing in Africa before colonialism. African were happy with their complexion. Brown skin wasn’t just the norm, it was beautiful. Africa has been tainted by the “light is right” mentality. 😞
Now, your complexion (how light you are) is connected to your chances of getting a job or a spouse. So I get the desperation to become lighter to increase your chances of survival and having a family. This is so sick and so sad.
Actually many African Women used Umbrellas to avoid the Sun and get darker, especially in West Africa.

If you love your skin you love your skin leave other people alone
Black is beautiful
everyone tell the truth, being very dark you get judged and treated differently so i understand why some people bleach. i never have and never will but respect someone's wishes if they want to be lighter then let then fulfill their dream, it the world we live in that is the problem, if the people treated light skins and dark skins the same then there would be no bleaching
Personal choices are fine, it's moreso the notion that people are being heavily influenced to think that dark skin is so bad it's leading people to disregard cancer. These products cause an alarming increase in cancer risk. I wouldn't have a problem with people who want get rid of a summer tan or hyperpigmentation or whatever a safe lightening cream, people should still be allowed to make decisions for their own body. But the dark skin demonization, light and white worship, and extremely dangerous products definitely have to go.
Someone asked me are all my children light skinned like me? I replied no they are Skittles pop and I love every last one of my 5 Skittles. That was a black person who questioned me. Smh.
the producer of this chemical they r in business. their purpose in the end of the day is to gain money .not to change black to wite
Its so dumb why tanning is ok but bleaching is not ?
Tanning is natural and bleaching is not. Bleaching is a result of white supremacy
Tishidiv it doesnt matter
Foolishness
Tishidiv I see people buying tanning lotions, or going to solarium or even getting injections to look more tanned so are these things natural?😂 Think before you judge
Tishidiv tanning is not natural. People go to tanning salons and use tanning creams. We are not talking about the unwanted tan that we get from sun.
so heartbreaking that these women hate their beautiful skin colour so much that they bleach it. their complexion is beautiful, black girls need no makeup to look beautiful!! if only they knew.
And wigs?
Kev Street That too
Tanning, Caro white, never satisfied some people. Im Nubian black and im of no self hate when it comes wit it. Just be white ( to the blacks ) just be black ( to the whites ) is u happy?
Idk why she stopped bleaching but that story was a lie. Try again!
Im cool with the skin im in, im brown i kniw how thay happened. Seems like darker complexioned ppl especially i. Africa would be extra proud. Same time if colorism exist thays sad idk if it happened bfr colonization, but am sure it got worst if it existed after they came. It happened here after slavery smh.
Why doesnt manufacturers make a Safe skin bleaching product.
henry pendle if u think logically the main reason black people are black ks be ause they have melanin in our skin cells .. the ammont of melainin detrimine our shade of pigmentation in our skin .. bleaching mainly work on pellying the superficial skin that have pigmentation .. so it's like skinning outer layer of your skin that why it's dangerous , I don't think their any way to safly bleach unless they find way to ztop melainin cells in our skin from being mitotic but if they did that it would mean we would have another risks of developong skin disorders .. I ask u is that worth it .
It started with their religious beliefs worshiping white white mother mary and the saintsm in the Catholic church
2:45 Just be white theory confirmed lol
This practice and industry has to end! This belief needs to be overturned. We must relearn to love our skin, our people, our culture, of history, our ancestors. Ultimately we must decolonize our minds, bodies, and societies. #DeColonizeYourSelf
Solarium?
Racist?
African are the children of Israel and need to appreciate who they are why the hell would you want to take away your beautiful melanin and leaves us with all pale women....
Please i need am
😭😭😭😭😭
Damn I thought this was just a myth
"My body my choice"
jehs
Why would you skin bleach when you can drink bleach?
PRAISE KEK Lol they going to die if they drink bleach
Lmao don't worry urself !! It won't stop today nor tomorw ! It's a useless campaign 🤣🤣
🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭
asians do this to.before colonization there were allready methods for whitening skin in Africa
As long as it's safe, i see no problem with this.
smh ppl fighting skin bleaching but not fighting tummy tucks, breast lifts, butt implant etc. they are all the same thing u not pleased with something about yourself so u change it
Rica Love None of these should be fought against ! People should be allowed to do whatever they want to themselves. Yes it's kind of sad but if you're insecure about your complexion, your breasts, your backside.... you should be allowed to change it, as long as it does not affect your health.
Who cares? It's their body. Let them do whatever they want to it.
Lots of people care because most of the time its due to self hate and inferiority complexes
I wonder ooo
You're not going to win this fight, you need to educate the people about the natural ways they can lighten their skin without using these crazy chemicals that eventually will give them cancer.🙏🏽
Oh for the love of, you people do realize that skin whitening products are used by people with vitiligo, right ?
Nope just nope. Its mainly used by people who want lighter skin because they've grown up in countries where they've been ravaged by colonial groups and think now that white is right.
Uk Gamer
When in doubt, blame the West. Never mind that the ancient Persians bleached their skin. Never mind that the Japanese did it before they ever made contact with the West. Never mind that historically, having lighter skin indicated that you were well-off, because it was a sign that you spent most of your time indoors. Never mind that having light skin in a country where most people have dark skin might be seen as an exotic novelty, and ergo might be seen as attractive. Nope, let's ignore all that and just ascribe it to white people.
Black people can't lighten their skin, white people can't have dreadlocks - nobody is allowed to step outside their ethno-cultural lane or have any degree of morphological freedom.
not many people have vitiligo. It's used as a beauty product.
ultrapwnd
And?
Light skin is desired the world over. Even before modern marketing it was still desired. Products were made to fill the niche market. No biggie.
Mung Mung not everyone prefers lighter skin
blah blah blah. there's nothing to fight here. if u don't love yourself that's your fault
if someone wants to lighten their skin it's none of your business it's their choice and they decide to do so knowing the risks involved. mind your own business
I forgive you for your ignorance .see people like you make the black race look worthless and endorsing the main problem
As a human, we should tell them! It is our duty and honey most of them are not aware about this. Anyways i guess you are bleaching your skin? And maybe that's why this is hurting you.
Darker the berry sweeter it is
