  • The Norwegian winter is beautiful, and it can be cold. The month of January can bring Siberian cold and over 1 meter of snow. Even for Norwegians accustomed to harsh winters far north of the Arctic Circle, temperatures below -4 Fahrenheit can be, at most - or rather, at least - challenging. Most of the societal machinery can come to a halt for two to three days. Planes face difficulties, numerous train departures are canceled, and it's entirely impossible to either get the car out of the snowdrift or drive with it. The road authorities and municipalities simply cannot clear all the roads; they get snowed in.
Here in Agder in Southern Norway, we usually have relatively mild and easily manageable winters, but occasionally, we get heavy snowfall. Tvedestrand municipality is located right by the Skagerrak. In this region with humid air, you can multiply the temperature on the thermometer by 1.5 or 2 to get the perceived cold temperature on the skin. -4 to -8 Fahrenheit is cold!
There are Norwegians who take an ice bath, but most of us dress in multiple layers of wool clothing before going outdoors. Norway is a long-stretched country. In Finnmark and on the Finnmark Plateau, winters are always cold, but the air is dry, and the cold is not as troublesome as it is here in the south, right by the coast.
