  • The Ericson 38-200 offers a lot of nice comfortable features in a racer-cruiser built in the 80's. We're familiar with this particular boat because it's currently owned and being sold by our friends Drew and Avery.
This boat was struck by lightning twice, the electronics were replaced along with a list of upgrades. She was sailed down to Marathon, FL and now is for sale as her owners want to go back to a powerboat.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

WOW Very nice. Your friend took good care of his boat. Excellent candidate for full electric conversion. Just not to crazy about the wheel being so far aft. The woodwork nicely compliments the layout. Looks like all the space was used wisely. Hit by lighting twice. He should play the lottery. A friend of mine bought a car and hit deer twice each year over a three year period. He sold the car and it never hit a deer again.

Now, this is interesting, I looked at an Ericson 38-200 just like this down here in Kema, Texas on the South East side of Houston last week. I'm shopping around myself, but for a fixer-upper. If it were just me, my disabled daughter, and recent wife, this would be the perfect boat, but I need more room. I've always liked the Ericson boats and have sailed the 38 years back belonging to a friend who lives on his boat while managing the marina where he keeps his boat. What a job, but I guess someone has to do it. I'm fixing to be 66, retired, and that would be my dream situation. Anyone have a marina needing managing on a pretty part of the Gulf of Mexico? LoL, I'm serious folks, anyhow Jordan, keep these video's coming, keep your eyes out for a sweet fixer-upper, cheap, Sloop or Cutter, prefer cutter, but would consider a sweet ketch. Something in the 50 to 60 ft ranges because I have two big sons to work a lot of sail, a couple of daughters, and grandkids who need to learn to sail. I won't mind a drive to Flordia if it's an interesting boat as I have a stepdaughter in Pensacola I would love to see. Y'alls videos are unique in that you do show older fixer-uppers, but you pick the most interesting and unique, keep at it, you've started something because I'd much rather see something with potential I might be able to afford than a newer fancy one listed with a broker carrying a hefty price padded by commission.

Don’t know if you guys know but after a boat has been hit by lightning twice you can no longer insure it and it carries on the rest of the boats life if it’s sold over and over if it has been claimed on insurance. Most marinas won’t let you in if you don’t have insurance.

Hi guys as you seem to be reviewing quite a few yachts and obviously looking at others I would like to chuck in a little extra information about yachts like the Ericson 38. The Ericson 38 is an IOR one tonner (or was originally designed as one). IOR was a handicap system used in the 70s/80’s under which yachts were measured and obtained a rating and had a MASSIVE influence on yacht design. IOR yachts of the Ericson 38 era typically had a small mainsail big genoa(foresail) rig. They had beamy hulls (diamond shaped when looked at from above) with narrow and somewhat distorted sterns (for rating reasons). Along with one tonners there were quarter, half, 3/4 and 2 tonners plus AC (Admirals Cup) yachts. It was a fascinating era of yachting and I suggest you google IOR, One ton Yachts (the history of the One ton cup is fascinating) and Admirals Cup.
Now to completely confuse you Ericson 38’s along with other One tonners and IOR yachts were FAST for their rating but SLOW for their size. Feel free to contact me if you further explanation of what is a fascinating subject.

Hello my friend, Please be very careful when using that term "complete rewiring." I am an ABYC certified marine electrician in Port Charlotte. Florida. For boats, this is the lightning capital of America. I have been at this for 37 years and have never found a boat that was "completely rewired" after a lightning strike. That means replacement of every switch, fixture, fastener, piece of wire, etc. All of it. It is a good idea, but you may have a tough time getting the insurance company to go along with it. A special caution, I have encountered boats where the owner pocketed the insurance check, cleaned the boat up a bit and then flipped it. Happens all the time in Florida. I could write a book on hidden horrors in sailboats that have been hit by lightning. Often, you can find damage years later in places you would never suspect.

Sucks being disabled on a fixed income.

What's your disability? I know a man in Galveston, a disabled vet to be exact; he has no legs and lives on his 35-foot sailboat all by himself. He finagled a home loan from the bank to boot, to finance the rebuild/refit. It's all pushbutton, electric, and hydraulic. He has an interesting custom wheelchair trolly system he designed for getting around the boat both on deck and below, clever; it attaches to him and doubles as a life vest too. No way to describe it, I'll try to get pictures, but he's working on a commercial model and might not want me to. He has a remote-controlled stiff-leg hoist to get himself on and off of the boat. Anyhow, I'm 66 come this December, have COPD, a 16-year-old daughter, brain-damaged at birth from Listeria Menengitas and is Autistic too. Her mother suffers from severe bipolar disorder, and we're going to live on our sailboat and sail where we want to until the end of my days just as soon as I find the right fixer-upper. I'm lucky here because I can fix, repair, build, and jury rig anything if pressed. If you put your mind to it, set a goal, you can do it; you've just got to try, and keep on trying. Persistence is the key to success!

I am on a walker full time.
I was in a wheelchair for several years but now I have learned to walk and push through the pain. I still have times I have to use the chair if I have an appointment that I need to be at on my bad days.
I would learn to get around on a boat but I paid off my house just after I was hurt so I was fortunate but I don’t have a way to make money to purchase the boat.
If I did have a boat I am sure it would do me a lot of good both physically and mentally.
Thanks for your story of people who are living their dream even when disabled.
I could sell my house but I need a backup for the future.
My life is good under the circumstances.
I just dream of one more adventure and sailing at the very least the east coast and part of the Caribbean world fulfill it.

@@ddriskill1 Damn dude, I feel your pain. I have a suggestion, though. Pack a backpack with lunch, snacks, and something to drink and go hang out at the marinas; I do that a lot. Talk to folks, and someone will take you sailing regularly. I'm known around all of the local marinas in this area, well, and my daughter and I get invited sailing all the time. I fix things for folks because I like fixing things, I can make a diesel engine talk, and I give sailing tips and tricks to newbies. You have to put yourself in the right place to be there at the right time, get it? I see beautiful boats for sale all the time, none so far that I could afford, some are too small, and a few need too much work, but someday the right one will come along at the right price. Look at what happened to Randi and Jordan. They were at the right place at the right time with the right person and ended up with a sweet little free boat. One never knows. Keep the faith brother!

Rob the closer tbe engine to the centre of the boat the better , it makes a very noticeable difference . I for one would appreciate a lower freeboard and less open space on a passage. Not as comfortable in a calm anchorage as a large aft cabin. But add some swell and a bit of a blow that same space is hard and painful place to move around.

Best way to learn to sail is , get your boat wet frequently. I watch a lot of UA-cam and get ideas to try, like balancing the boat, heaving to, MOB techniques, and different anchoring configurations. Having someone that has some experience would be nice but in the middle of northern Nevada they are as easy to find as honest politicians.

In an earlier boat tour video someone said that a boat hit by lightening could have micro pores (holes?) in the fiberglass. I have no idea about these things but I found this web page about a lightning struck sailboat - < forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?/topic/133329-buying-a-boat-that-was-struck-my-lightning/ > Seems like boats being hit by lightning can be lots of trouble - even if the damage has been "fixed". But they can also be good deals - if damage was minimal. Since this boat was hit twice, . . . I'm not sure I would want to buy it.

    • @LearningtheLines
      @LearningtheLines  5 років тому

It also depends if the boat was grounded properly. This boat has a keel stepped mast and a solid lead keel. The path of least resistance is down the mast and out the keel. There's no fiberglass in the way to be damaged. That's not the case with a lot of deck stepped boats (like that Catalina) or boats with encapsulated keels. Those types of boats need extra grounding to ensure there is a path for the lightning to take away from the glass.

That would be "berth" , and to be honest its a larger "berth" than it looks.. yachts from the 60s, 70, 80s dont have the same beam or carry it aft like more modern yachts , but arguably sail to wind better , and an erickson doesnt have the high freeboard either that many modern yachts feature, high freeboard acts as a sail in heavy conditions, so its a trade off, comfort and space , or better Bluewater behaviour and a slightly reduced living space , horses for courses ..

"The boat is a C&G boat NOT a Propane boat". What the hell does that mean? Come on we are all not maritime skippers some us are as smooth as a fresh jar of Skippy but want to learn. Frustrating review style to assume.

CNG stands for compressed natural gas. Natural Gas actually Rises it is safer than propane. Propane tends to settle downward. The problem is nobody sells it anymore.
