Sony TC-440 Tape Machine as Tape Echo/Delay

- I had a Sony TC-440 Tape Machine home for 2 min and after blasting some Peter Tosh - Legalize it....I found how to use it as a Tape Echo - Delay
Fun stuff
UPDATE: I just found a second machine at Value Village for $40.
I read about this effect in an article about the engineering that went into some of The Beatles' music and never understood how it worked until I saw this video. I guess I'm a visual learner. Thanks for the upload
I bought mine new in '73, and it still performs flawlessly. "SOS" by the way is "Sound on Sound". As I recall the TC440 cost around $400 new.
Just picked one up these up today at a thrift store and was loooking for some info about it. Thanks for the great ideas!
Cool vid. I have a Sony TC-630 and play with the same stuff on my DX7 synth. S.O.S stands for Sound on Sound (for anyone that might not know)--it can be used as a multi-track recorder. I like splicing single loops on recorded tape and only running that on the reels and then sending the signal to my Tascam 488 (which is sadly dead as TEAC has stopped making motors....so now it's the bland DAW). Got to keep these machines oiled and alive!
Why i find this so entertaining is beyond me
I started laughing when you switched it to SOS and played with the speed :)
That sounds bloody amazing, i'm a wanna!
THAT DELAY IS AMAZING!!!
FANTASTIC! I use also one old akai for tape delay - its just one speed but I can change amount of reapeting till 6 - then I can play something in 5-8 or 6-8 rhytm. Today I will go to see Sony TC 366 - and I hope it will works all speed changes. I will record some videos with this machines and post to you...
Deep!
@runishit That's why I posted the vid. I was just kinda messing about with it and had the nice "WTF" moment.
I have since made a tape loop using 2 empty reels and a length of tape that just feeds around the 2 spools and thru the tape heads so there is no need to rewind when you run out of tape. It'll just delay forever (or until you turn it off)
Thanks for this. Could you use this Machine for ADT (Double tracking)?
NICE! would it be possible, to put a potentiometer between the motor that's running the tape?? so you could ajust the tape speed more randomly..cuz now it only has 3 different speed modes. that would be awesome man i'm thinking about that for a long time..
you re so cool bro
my unit is atasqued, jammed a play button, how to fix this??
Found out that the "SOS" setting is "Sound On Sound" I guess that kinda means it's an infinite loop (and the level of the loop is controlled with the mix knob)
"Echo" I guess is just a minor delay/repeat, but "SOS" is full on insanity.
In this video the amount was a bit uncontrollable because of a dirty echo mix knob. Sorted it out later with some contact cleaner.
whether it has a built-in speaker
Kind of.
The Sound on Sound & Echo features are cool. But to really use it as a Tape Delay... you need a Mixer with an Aux. Send.
This isn't exactly a Tape Delay... it's your Tape Machine feeding a Bucket Brigade in the case of the "Echo" & more like a Tape Delay in the case of the SOS. But there's still some Chippery going on if I'm not mistaken. Cause SOS is basically a poor man's Multitrack.
If a person were to do what he did in this demo but with a loop of tape and the erase head disabled, would that give a version of Echoplex sound on sound?
wow FUCK DUDE! i've got an old sony reel to reel, with the SOS and echo mode indeed, but never knew this was possible with that deck! never checked that settings out.. i'm so happy that i never threw this thing away! haha
@TheWitz 1/4" on 7" reel
...I found a second one. hahahha
@runishit Also...I got this tape machine for $20, so it was probably the cheapest tape delay ever.
Another point...I'm not too sure about changing the tape speed while the machine is running. If you do this and something breaks, do not blame me. I just do it because...well....I don't really care. HAH
I also have a TC-366 and it doesn't have the same Echo/SOS functions.
HAHAHAH Honestly: Already thought of that.....haven't looked into it yet.
Think that's cool? Get another one and space them far apart... loop one tape between the two and you'll be able to vary the length of your echo depending on how far apart the tape decks are. We're talking minutes here if you have enough space, like your back yard!
NOOOOOO! Now they're gonna overprice them on Ebay! Thanks a lot man grrrrrrr..
The "dirty" SOS is dirty because you're not using it correctly. Record live material on left channel. Rewind and record live material on right channel and mix in the previously recorded left channel...then vice versa ad nauseum. SOS = Sound on Sound.
