  • Richard Sleigh talks about a way to get immersed in the language of blues improvisation by going deep into minor pentatonic scales. At the Blues harmonica Summit on November 11th ( www.harmonica1... ), Richard will be showing you a way to transform your blues solos by going on a blues cruise from 5th position (no bent notes) to 3rd position (one bent note) and then re-inventing 2nd position with new chops, patterns, and pathways...
here are tabs for the monor pentatonic scale - Em pentatonic scale on key of A harmonica (2nd position):
    2 3’ 4+ 4 5 6+
Em pentatonic scale on key of C harmonica (5th position):
    2+ 3+ 3’’ 3 4 5+
(Key to harmonica tab - numbers with plus signs are blow notes, plain numbers are draw notes, an apostrophe after a number means half step bend examples - 3’ = 3 draw half step bend , 3’’ = 3 draw whole step bend)
I have 3 major and 3 minor pentatonic sales completely tabbed out with sheet music, harmonica tab, and mp3s along with blues scale in 2nd position and chord rhythm exercises in this download:

    Richard,
I came back to this video the other day frustrated with a lack of progress playing guitar with harp. I’m quite proficient with guitar, and have become proficient with harp in 2nd/3rd, but could not out the 2 together. I’ve only messed around with this position for 3 days and I’m absolutely dumbfounded. I can’t believe how good it sounds. This is an absolute game changer for me, and has lit a new fire. Thank you so much for contributing this.

also you say at 7:10 to play E minor on a C harmonica. I cannot find that combination on any position charts that I have downloaded. Of course I only go to second or third position since I have yet to understand positions. Trying for years with very little uderstanding. Thanks for the lesson

So we call this 4th position? So cool, thank you Richard!

This would be 5th position... 4th position on a C harp would be A minor.

A Pentatonic scale is a scale with 5 notes (from the Greek word 'pente' meaning 5). The minor pentatonic scale you are referring to has five notes, 2D, 3' (not 3''), 4B, 4D, and 5D The 6B is the same note as the beginning note but an octave higher. On a C harp 2D is a G and so is 6B. You only count the alphabet names of the notes one time for each letter.

@@richardroysleigh Thanks Richard. I still confuse holes with notes. The music language... is still very confusing to me...positions, flats, shraps etc.
By the way I watched an earlier video of yours that suggested wood shedding on the blues scale and I could not agree more. For an ear player like me, the most fun an improvement method is simply to just play. Thanks for the time you put in to teach others.

What are those 5 notes, and are they the same over 145 progressions?

On the C harmonica - the E minor pentatonic scale is 5+ (5 blow) 6+, 6, 7, 8, draw then 8+ - if you play those 5 notes over an E minor blues these notes will work well over the I, IV, AND V (1, 4, 5) chords in any combination.
