Great solid work Jonny Pink! Love the rich Nikon colors and sharpness. The 800 PF is sweet too but a bit harder to hand hold although I have had some great shots with it on my Z9. If I could ever get a free day (who said retirement is boring?), I will try and track you down at one of the usual spots. Cheers!
Thank you, thank you. I would love to shoot together. I really wish I had access to another lens to compare. This is the first Z mount Nikon zoom I have tried. I like the 600 PF with an extender on the Z8 - that was fun. As far as hand holding a large, lens..... I have gotten used to it. Gotta do it while I am still able. 🙏💖🤗
Love your Flame Skimmer Dragonfly shots 😀. I've been macro shooting them in Redondo Beach with the R5/RF100mm combo and have been happy with the results too. Keep-up the good work.
Thank you, thank you!!! Are you using a flash? I have found, at least for me, that the 100-500 - especially with a 1.4 extender - works AMAZINGLY well. I have a video from this same spot I hope to have up next week using the R5II and the 100-500 with the 1.4. Shorter MFD and so easy to get them in flight as well. Thank you, thank you!! 🙏💖🤗
Lovely images, there is so much insecticide use in many areas of UK it is often difficult find subjects. Not to mention the classic British summer, 26-29 days of rain per month
We have a lot of pollution and poison run off here, but the marshy areas like this and Sepulveda where I shoot are relatively free of that..... or that natural things around there counter act it - I think LOL. In that area standing in the mud, the swampy musky smell was very strong. Wish I could share that via video too. Thank you for letting me share 🙏💖🤗
Hi Jonny - Another great video really enjoyed it - what people fail to realise is that Canon auto focussing works great straight out of the box even when set to automatic. What's more even the cheaper apsc cameras from the R50 up now have the similar auto focus systems. The Nikon apsc cameras are nowhere near as good - really important for good wildlife shots. You're video segments looked great today. What are you currently using for video?
I agree - Canon just.... works. LOL It works for the way I want to shoot no matter the camera I use. As far as video, I was using my old Sony. It has limitations and I edited that a couple of time because when I zoomed in it got really grainy so I left it zoomed out. I was using that because I did not care if I dropped it. My very very very favorite is my Canon R50. Wow o WOW is that eye focus sticky and it is SOOOO much sharper. But this, an old Sony video camera that is no longer made. 🙏💖🤗
I have no idea. I wish I had a Z8 and another lens with me but I dont own them. I am just used to how Canon works with the little critters. And, it could have been my AF settings. However, in all the cameras I have used over many years, this is the first one I have NOT been able to get dragonflies in flight. Even my old D800 (favorite camera of all time) nails it.🙏💖🤗
Wel..... The Nikon AF got much better with the latest firmware update on teh Z8 & 9 - it did not make it to the Z6III (dismal). In my biased opinion having used them all, the Canon AF even on the entry level R50 or the R8 ( one of my favorite inexpensive cameras) are simply better. More accurate and stickier with the AF. To quote Jared Polin when he talks about the different systems and AF - unless you have used them all, you just don't know. In my use, I have found it to be so as well even before I heard him say that. Not negative on Nikon, but Canon works better for me and the things I shoot. 🙏💖🤗
@@JonnyPink65 thank you so much for taking time to write this. This actually helps. I tried a R5mii and there’s a clear difference compared to Z8 when it comes to autofocus. I love the Nikon 600mm tc glass but not confident with the z8 autofocus. I think you can get some action shots from canon that you can’t do with z8. Hopefully canon will release the teleconverter with variable magnifications. It will be a game changer
@@suinanthonan3482 My absolute pleasure. I can not tell you how much I appreciate your time and you letting me share with you. As corny as it sounds, it is the reason I do this. And answering questions - HUGE!! I really do like the Nikon lenses but if the AF is not accurate in terms of what I am looking for, it is not for me. Many are happy with it, but Canon for me, just works!!! Again, thank you, thank you. 🤗💖
@@JonnyPink65 No question the R5 MKii has a better autofocus and you won't see Nikon improve until the next processor enhancement. I am a Z9 user, formally a Z8 user and I would say to anybody that is new to Nikon, don't believe everything the AF box is telling you. It often jumps off or appears not to be tracking when it fact the camera is doing just fine. I have often wondered if the IBIS causes the AF box to appear to jump off making it appear to lack stickiness, but the AF is staying with it. I have often been frustrated with the AF system, only to find out later after uploading, that everything was bang on. I am sure you have seen the strange IBIS generated wanderings of the AF box after firing some shots. Using Sport mode supposedly improves things. I keep meaning to try this and to use Sport mode with AF-c and only using Normal in Af-s. Anyway, go Canon if the AF is your number one priority, but I just couldn't handle the buffer on the R5MKii. The Z6iii will shoot at 20fps flat out and only stop when your card fills up. The R5MKii will soon come to a stop when firing at 30fps. Your work was a pleasure to view, thank you. As much as I really appreciate what a great lens the 180-600 is, the 600PF is just another level of loveliness.
@@300ShadesofGreen This Z6II was a real letdown. I had a whole sequence filmed with the external recorder. The camera AF would shot bang on but when I went to process it, it s no where near sharp so that was not a body for me. I deleted all that so that I did not get a million hate comments LOL. I do really like Z8 & 9 and think the Z8 is a better route than the R5II. The last firmware on the Z8 / 9 was fantastic. But I will quite Jared Polin - unless you have used the other systems, you just dont know and I will stand by that as well. I LOVE my R3 and even though I am going to play with an R1 for a while, other than precapture, I cant see how much better it will be..... but it is again a step up autofocus. And you know Canon, at least it seems to me, tests the newest AF on the lower end bodies. The R6II, R8, R50 and my R3 are all about the same as far as how amazing the AF is an the R5II is also about the same - just the added precapture. c3PO raw video and the overheating issue. I had a lot more footage to put in here but opted not too. 🙏💖🤗
Nikon doesn’t have Bug eye autofocus. If you’re in animal detect expecting the camera to pick up on and eye of a dragonfly you won’t have much success. You’ll need to use a different mode such as 3d with subject detection turned off or something else.
Yeah, I used that a lot with the Z8 and had great success. Gonna have to go back there with a Z8 and 600 PF sometime. No matter how you slice it, I had a blast being there amongst the dragonflies. 🙏💖🤗
"I won't do that. I want something that I push the focus button, and it focuses." What a ridiculous statement. There isn't a camera made that you don't have to set up to do what you want it to do.
Agreed 100% I can set up a Canon camera in about 20 minutes as I an so familiar with the set up and menus. The Sony too me a little long but I got it set and it was AWESOME. The Z9, Z8 - same thing - the Nikon menus are not that different from what they were when I was shooting a D500, the D800, D750 D850 etc. This Z6III with the 180-600 I found to be dismal. I shot an entire sequence after processing a couple of days worth of shooting. I had a recorder on the camera, watching it SHOW it was nailing eye focus, but when looking at the photos later - all soft and not usable. I had that editing in there but I pulled it off. It came off negative so I just didnt use it. I loved shooting the Z8 with the updated firmware and pared with the 600 PF, it was awesome. This combo for me - nope. When I focus in either single or eye tracking, I expect what I paid for to work as it should. This is one that I would not recommend . It may have been better with another lens but I did not have one to try. Thank you for the input. 🙏💖🤗
These are just gorgeous!

Amazing sharp images of dragonflies. I enjoyed watching your video. A big LIKE from Singapore.
A huge hug and thank you from sunny southern California!! 🙏🤗💖
What a lovely place! 😀✌️
Thank you Chris. It is actually small but that whole area has some diversity. Not an amazing as what you have around you, but it is fun. 🙏🤗💖

Hi, I'm woncering if using a dot sight like the just released TT Artisan's 53$ one would help to shoot dragonflies in flight
