Hydra the Revenge Review, Dorney Park Bolliger & Mabillard Coaster | Weirdest B&M Floorless

  • Hydra the Revenge at Dorney Park is arguably the weirdest Bolliger & Mabillard floorless coaster. This coaster has a unique layout with the inversions seemingly out-of-order. Hydra replaced the former Hercules roller coaster, which was a neat tie-in to Greek mythology and by all accounts, Hydra is a superior ride.

Poor Dorney. Hydra had to compete with Kingda Ka its opening year (and previously Talon had to compete with Nitro). While far from B&M's other forceful coasters, it's a fun and unique ride that almost never has a line.

I think it's my favorite floorless. I love to Jojo roll, the straight drop, and the inversions. Also, it nearly ever has a wait.

I honestly think it's super underrated. It is crazy unique for w florless coaster. Definitely not intense but just look at the layout and series of elements. A heart shaped cobra roll, Jojo roll, and incline dive loop all on a B&M Floorless? I'm glad B&M went out of their comfort zone and made something different, something that doesn't feel like a B&M Floorless cause they all feel the same. I hope to see more of that from B&M but as Floorlesses aren't super popular anymore by the general public, probably won't see as many floorlesses.

I love the unique elements like the jojo roll, straight-drop, and out-of-order elements. I just wish some of the inversions later in the ride packed more of a punch.

This is my 2nd favorite floorless coaster. I love the very unique layout and strange elements. I have only gotten a very mild rattle in spots. A big issue I usually have with B&M floorless coasters is headbanging, which Hydra has none of. The slower speed and great transitions are the reason why. Plus it's so different from the standard, which can seem boring after riding a lot of them, so this is THE floorless coaster for people who don't care much for floorless coasters (me). It corrects the flaws of the regular ones. Maybe it creates other flaws, but I'm okay with that, because I appreciate uniqueness. It's my favorite ride in the park.
Bizarro is my favorite floorless, just barely. It's a standard layout, but it executes it perfectly, with great transitions, no rattle, and theming.

I definitely agree that this ride delivers nothing in terms of positive gs, but it still holds up as a great ride due to it's smoothness, location, fun factor and weirdness. While it does have quite a few throwaway elements, I love the jojo roll and final corkscrew. The second hill after the cobra roll has some nice floater in the back, and the drop has some sustained airtime too. I think this is a great coaster for Dorney Park, as it reflects Dorney on so many levels. Both the coaster and park are a little weird, but very fun, and not elite, but quite underrated.

I rode Hydra for the first time this past summer and I agree its was a weird B&M coaster. It was a lot of fun too. My first ride was in the back row and I was surprise with the airtime I got in the back compared what I got in front. I defiantly recommend riding Hydra in the back row for the best airtime and smoothness.

I never had the impression this coaster is “much maligned” among enthusiasts - maybe not held in particularly high regard, but not disliked, particularly (though I have heard some negative responses).

    Canobie Coaster would say:
The trains feature the familiar B&M over-the-shoulder restraints. They are rather hard, but fortunately Hydra tracks fairly well. There's some jackhammering in a few valleys, but they don't really cause any headbanging, just vibrations that you can feel in your head. Thankfully, the transitions on this coaster do not cause any headbanging. In fact, there's an argument the transitions on this coaster are...
    A) quite smooth.
    B) very smooth.
    C) too smooth.

I think one reason this coaster is maligned by enthusiasts is because if Hercules had lasted another 10 years, it would've been RMC'd, and that would've been a true standout coaster for Dorney Park. Hydra is a fun ride, but not particularly intense, and definitely not a standout for the park. So enthusiasts see it as a missed opportunity. I think an RMC Hercules would've been fantastic, but keeping the original around for 10 more years would've sucked, and I'm glad Dorney at least got a decent coaster with high capacity to replace it before the chain turned its back on the park. Otherwise it could've been like Stinger which was removed without replacement.

I have a lot of problems with this coaster, particularly with what it replaced in terms of its terrain/location (if only they waited a few years for an rmc redo of Hercules) but everyone seems to enjoy it, and having medium level intense coasters for families and newer/apprehensive coaster riders is always good to have in your park… and even the worst b and m looper is still a great ride

    I'm laughing, but imagine saying:
    pretty smooth
    quite smooth
    super smooth
    too smooth
These four terms each have an adverb, "pretty", "quite", "super", and "too", followed by "smooth". While the four terms all mean they are smooth, I think there are differences between them. What are? What do you think?
    Canobie Coaster would say:
    A) Pretty smooth is beyond the smoothness threshold what should be correct.
    B) Quite smooth is beyond the smoothness threshold what should be correct.

Not every roller coaster can be the snappiest, meanest, most intense riding experience possible. I think Hydra fits really nicely in the park, giving a more tame alternative to Talon that still provides high thrills due to the unique layout, element choice, and most of all the beautiful shaping on the dive loop and cobra roll. I think that Hydra delivers exactly what it set out to, and gets higher marks from me for that. Airtime on the s-bend passing the station would've been nice, but maybe that was a callback to the crappy airtime found on Hercules. lol
Hydra absolutely smokes Hercules in quality, longevity, ride intensity, layout, originality, capacity, aesthetics... I guess Hercules wins for going over the water, but in every other conceivable metric, Hydra crushes the old woodie.
    8/10 for me

My least favorite B&M that didn't originate as a stand up (Vortex - Patriot). But it's next to Steel Forceless ...I rode Hercules when it was new and it was excellent. Never rode it when it was "hurt your knees." I like RMC stalls but not the first inversion on this thing. And Talon was a disappointment, too - too sanitized in the forces. Hersheypark's inverted is much better. Medusa West's straight drop and inversions are far better, too.

It was in the morning and on a half empty train so maybe that made it bad? But wow tit was vibrating through every element that was higher than 1.5 gs.
Also a slight headbang after the first valley, i was trying to let my head be free from the seat

The Logo is is freaking epic, for cedar fair standards... the head looks like the seahorse from the movie named so, and even less drakonic, that the heads in the background, make it a drakonic seaserpent, that looks better than Leviathans cartoony logo, this one looks it's from the 60ties, IDC much about theming, But get the Logo atleast a better commisioned artist. there are many artists that will draw you something better foor just 20bucks that looks like the original logo but CORRECTED, as the Hydra from lerna was either a multiheaded: snake, (sea)serpent, serpentine seadragon, drakonic seaserpent, hydra, Hydra(gon), from all version of the myths, and depictions on fresnos and vases and walls from Crete to mainland greece, italy , macedonia etc etc, i wrote a small highschool paper on cryptozoology from myths.
Sorry, But SOMETIMES, the smoothness, lack of forces, unique track and layout, you have more time to just CHILLOUT and enjoy the coaster for WHAT IT IS and it is much like gently flying smaller general aviation plane or a smooth jet flight that wont exc3eed 2.5g' s but you simply enjoy the ride, the view, withouth the vibrations, excessive forces, you get to glide you get to fly, Ironic how the hydra can be very gentle, on the spiritual side of things.
Here in the netherlands we have untamed, one of the best RMC's actually i heard, i like forcefulness, i hate boring rides. But Hydra the revenge hold a special place in my heart for me as the gentle serpent it is and that's what intrigues me, americans have so much more B&M coasters and inthe netherlands they didn't exist until recently, the gerstlauer was aamazing btw, thought me how forceful rides are. But hey if you guys dont like the ride ship it to walabiholland or attractiepark hellendoorn theres only one vekoma old style small aparition of a coaster, a corscrewand thats it, give em that coaster. it fits the park the best and they need more coasters, add an b&m abd that park will expand like crazy and the younger or older people who go there will have a very very fun ride.
I just enjoy the coaster for what it is, and have more time to observe everything that is happening in and around me,enjoy it for the gently serpent that it is the hydra of Lerna wont bother anymore who' except when you try to slay him. then it get underrater, overhated. And they can UPGRADE THE COASTER, ADD a special extra smoothness permament greasing layer, and modify the exterior contact points of the wheels for more smootnees, accelerate chainlift/or cabe lift fastness/ or even an LSM Climb or tire track Climb, for extra speed, the you have the coaster you'd rate a 9
I am a dragonkin (otherkin dragon) it overlaps woith occultism and furry/scalie subculture. and the fact that Herakles was brought down and out came allong a beautiful offride and onride which is just a beautiful and graceful onride, it's so buttery smooth you just go easy on the restrains and hold on (dont do it but i said it anyway), and have you entire arms and legs, spread out as much as possible, it even easy to find north east west south, so you can draw pentagram or septagrams and do some basic magick, if you do the kabalic cross first before boarding and after.
