What do you think to Friesach? This is, as far as I'm aware, the most comprehensive free organ currently available. I think this organ is better than some paid samples, and I highly recommend you downloading it from Piotr's website (see description for more details).

I have this organ (actually the Friesach Extended), and it is probably my favorite sample set out of any that I currently have (including theater organs). It's got a massive sound on full organ, and can be toned down to a whisper and still be clear and crisp. I probably have 14 or 15 combinations set up, thanks to Hauptwerk's built in combination action. I love the fact that it has 3 good solid 32' stops that I can use to rattle the neighbor's windows J/K!🤣 All said, it's probably one of the best, relatively modern cathedral organs available.😁🎵🎶🎵👍

BEAUTY in SOUND thanks v much i am a novice when it comes to pipe organs I play a small 1 manual chapel organ but haven’t progressed much beyond simple hymns, o have an at900c atelier organ and am now experimenting with hauptwerk i am adding a 27 note bass pedalboard this set looks v versatile so intend setting up some pistons on organ for various, I like the ‘presence’ not too dry.

This is one of my favorite sample sets - for a great smaller instrument Piotr Grabowski has Raczcyce - 2M-P by Vermuelen. It is truly one of the most exciting instruments available for Grand Orgue or Hauptwerk. He even has varied attacks for most of the pipework which responds perfectly with velocity sensitive keyboards and sounds amazing. Perfect for practicing since it is so clean and the acoustic is live but slightly drier.

I love both the instrument and the very well recorded sample set. Great and Swell both have many stops but are well designed, all stops perfectly fit together. Different styles like Bach, Franck, Mendelssohn, Messiaen all can be played in a very convincing way. Also: the sound of the sample set is very impressive but always transparant, recorded close enough from the instrument to be able to hear every note.

I enjoy it as a home practice organ - unfortunately the foundational stops sound excessively muddy and push my church's sound system too hard. I'm not entirely sure why this is - other sets from Piotr Grabowski sound fantastic there - but sadly every adjustment I've tried thus far has not fixed the problem.

It's nice to see so many people appreciate Piotr Grabowskis work! I'm glad I've organised that Instrument in Friesach for him. As I've played some concerts here, I know how versatile and beautiful the organ can be, that's why I suggested it to be sampled. It also is beautifully playable on two manual consoles, what makes it even more attractive :)
I hope several more Hauptwerk users discover Grabowskis beautifull work, we got some more Samplesets comming for you guys ;)

Again, we all owe Piotr Grabowski a HUGE, HUGE debt of gratitude for making this beautiful instrument, and others, available to us at no cost. This one has a definite THUMBS UP rating. Observation: Many of us are on the same page!!!! That's interesting. (Playing 'name that piece' with each stops's demonstration .... recognise quite a few!) T.

I absolutely love the versatility of this sample set. Perfectly good for both solo and liturgical work. I'm running Hauptwerk 7 Lite on a very budget two manual installation and this works very well simply using the solo division to augment the great and swell with the normal unison couplers. Spice things up with Hauptwerk's master octave couplers and it's a real powerhouse that actually runs better than St. Annes Moseley on my old PC.

I've downloaded Friesach (didn't take too long) and am now configuring it for my own setup (Johannus Opus 7 organ/dual Novation Launchpads mini hardware, controlling 8-channel bespoke reverb setup from my PC). First impressions are, how much will I donate to Mr Grabowski for this pleasure?! Impressive range of stops and colours. Only drawbacks are it feels like it needs some voicing tweaks in HW to sound it's best, and there's no dedicated trem'd samples. But can hardly complain at the price...

I'll be downloading this organ for practicing and my UA-cam efforts but I wish there was an organ like this with a smaller acoustic, this is why I have stuck to the St. Anne's organ as it can be used in a small church. Using Friesach would sound wrong in a church with hardly any acoustic. I was recently asked if I could record some hymns for a small church in Cornwall for the congregation to sing along to. They wanted me to use my Salisbury Cathedral set, I told them it would sound peculiar especially if they sung to it as the organ would have reverb but the singing would sound dead.
I don't like loading the curtailed sample sets, it just sounds wrong and seems pointless. Maybe these new organs that are recorded from different distances, preferably close up for less reverb can be use for smaller environments.

You can adjust the "tail" length - just for this purpose in the "load organ adjusting parameters" for that instrument, then change the release tail size - if it is done correctly you will know. Another way to achieve this is by not loading the releases except the short release, then trim the "tail release" to as short as you desire and with HW V there is built in Convolution Reverberation which you can adjust to be minimal but it will hide and blend any artifacts from the abrupt tail trimming.

This is a very nice-sounding sample set. Well-sampled, looped, de-noised, etc. So it is a very good copy of what is there. However, there is one major problem in that there is no positiv or choir. This make it difficult (not impossible) to play some of the French School. like Widor, Vierne, Dupre, where you need a positiv. The composer frequently calls for Sw-Pos coupling, and Sw-Pos-Gt. The Solo division can be used somewhat, but it really doesn't have the proper stops to serve as a positiv.

Yes I realise there's a vst bridge for hauptwerk, but it's kind of unfortunate. There are enough sample engines out there including Decent Sampler, and there are a few Decent Sampler sample sets of pipe organs, but nothing on the order of the quality of the Friesach.

@Alessandro Sisti Freisach is my primary instrument in Hauptwerk. It is a very fun effect to have a dialogue between two cornets on the Swell and Solo with an accompaniment on the Hauptwerk. The cornet on the Solo is very bright and speaks clearly while the Swell cornet décomposé is more mellow (and under expression for more dynamics). The Solo cornet stops at T.C. while the Swell cornet décomposé allows for the full compass if you need that lower octave.

You make the process of using the Hauptwerk software look so effortless, but that software is so crazy in it's organization that in my first couple of days trying it, all of the MIDI functions on my high-end MacBookPro are still grayed out and non-functional. The silly software won't even let me open and play back an existing MIDI sequence file to one of the organ simulations that come with Hauptwerk 'expert' or 'pro'. Your expertise in dealing with the idiosyncrasies of the software would be worth Patreon support over and above contributions for the wonderful music.

Richard, did you revoice this set at all? The volume is very low out of the box, much lower than every other set I own. To even be usable, I had to raise the amplitude of all stops 12dB. Even then, the swell flutes and strings are very soft, almost like they need to be raised higher on their own.
For example, at default amplitudes, the output of the Swell V. Celeste, middle C, is -50 dB, and the Great Principal 8' is -40. And if I go full organ, and play an 8 note chord, all couplers, I'm still sitting at -12dB. I've never seen a set this low before.

I can't remember to be honest, as it's been a very long time since I played this organ! Adjusting the volume isn't an issue though as it doesn't effect your other organs.

Richard - I'm a newcomer to your channel and am very appreciative, and in awe of, the work you do! Caroline too! I must point out that while I am NOT an organist (I'm actually a drummer!), I do have a small MIDI organ set up in my basement here in Canada! I have been a pipe organ enthusiast since I was around 9 years old (a long time ago). As a Civil Engineer, my main love is with Gothic Engineering and the way the organs speak in the Great Cathedrals of the world! The reverb in your demo is fantastic - is it native to the organ or have you enhanced it? I love stop demos like yours - are the interludes improvisation or actual pieces (I do recognize some, but not all)?

I have the hardest time trying to make my Hauptwerk setups (I have one at home and one at a church I play for) sound anywhere near as good as the recordings I hear around here. Tips? Tricks? It's such a complicated software...

    • @beautyinsound

Hi Ryan, in what way does your setup not sound as good as mine? My top tips would be to set the audio to 24bit and at least 48,000hz. Other than that, you could try adding some additional reverb. Let me know how you get on!

advanced versions. As you are extremely good and professional,I assumed that you had the advanced licence which allows you to carry out many adjustments to the individual voices etc.Really enjoyed your presentation.

Yes, and this is because it's only a "WebSite" hosting this Package ( and som others too ).
For example : If two or more Downloads were started at the same time, it will become difficult.
So be patient and try again.
