The word ultramarine means 'beyond the sea'. This is because the colour was produced by making dye from lapiz lazuli, which was imported from across the sea (asia).
I love how they all make fun of the Ultramarines, yet I don't see any of their primarchs rebuilding the imperium, writing the guidelines for all space marines, and being the supreme commander of the imperiums military.
Paul Harney And I don't see the Space Smurfs defending Terra at its most crucial moment, despite their legion being the most numerous during the Horus Heresy. Hell, what did they do, beyond get invaded by World Bearers, go on a wild goose chase against the Alpha Legion that achieved nothing and get their primarch almost killed later? Easy to rebuild everything when you never committed fully to fighting the heresy when it happened. Also, as the Lion said, perhaps Horus wasn't the only one who thought he was the rightful heir to the Imperium... Imperium Secundus ring a bell?
Although the Ultramarines may seem a little uninteresting, starched and emotionless, they are nonetheless an impressive army with formidable statistics. They have no known weaknesses, neither in an aspect of combat nor in their gen seed. They are practically perfect. I guess this is what makes them kinda boring-it's their perfection.
Exactly! their perfection is completely unnatural, even Emperor acted like a total jackass from time to time (murdered fighters who helped him conquer Earth and humiliated Lorgar which led to Horus heresy for example), In short, ultramarines are bunch of weirdos acting like robots instead of humans. Hell even their primarchs name is Robot!
+Garviel Loken I would say that they have no weaknesses, but no real strengths either. They're a "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" Legion/Chapter, while other Legions have strengths and weaknesses to counter the Ultramarines.
To people who keep telling them to do a specific video for a specific faction, I understand that you might want to just listen to things instead of reading, but these videos are just Lexicanum 40K articles. If you just want the information, just find the respective article on Lexicanum 40K.
For every new Warhammer 40K player that starts an Ultramarine army, the God Emperor hands 50,000 little girls over to the Dark Eldar and kills a kitten.
It's nice how you indirectly point out the unspoken obvious that scores of us secretly want to. While others out there do the same by pointing out how aggravating the Ultramarines noble perfection is, and how just about any other Chapter is cool but never the Ultra, no... Hah, just pearl.
largely the same, thing is ward made the ultras absolutely perfect in every way because they were his personal fav, saying they alone held the Imperium together after the heresy, and that all the other marines look up to them as exemplars. worst of all he pushed the other first founding chapters to the side giving them two or three paragraphs of fluff each, and stuffed it back with the second founding chapters like they weren't good enough to have their own fluff put up front.
Their constant uninterrupted chanting is drilling into my skull as if they were the immensely sanctimonious lovechild of tinnitus and a jackhammer. agitatisultramarinidominitisultramarini The pain of a million ripped out nosehairs are but a tender massage compared to this inexpressible ultratorture.
It's easily forgotten that the old 2004 4th ed codex had very little fluff regarding the other first founding chapters either: Ultramarines also dominated the times back then, even without Ward. The only real difference was that back then you -could- customize your own chapter using the Traits rules, and there were guides on how to make an army of Raven Guard, Salamanders, etc as well. That all changed with the 5th ed 'dex, although 6th has done much to rectify the problem.
Before we go thinking about how awesome these guys are remember matt ward virtually rewrote the fluff to make his favorite fanboy chapter the best one.
I actually only know one person who plays Space Marines painted like Ultramarines. I think it is overestimated how many people play them, and tbh, they have one of the best colour schemes IMO.
For Ultramar, for Guilliman, for the Imperium! Ultramarines are my second favorite Chapter/Legion, behind the Imperial Fists. Romans and Holy Romans! What's not to like?
Nice. Now all that's left is the Iron Hands and Raven Guard chapters. Though I think a couple history ones about the traitor legions might be interesting. I just kind of want to know what they were all specialized at.
Yep. I mean the Salamanders traditionally only have 7 companies. It's been the way they've organized themselves since the second founding. Although the Salamanders lost more than most, with barely even any successor chapters of their own, it goes to show just how many Astartes in the other legions were lost in the Heresy.
Good little video clip. Some dodgy pronunciation of macragge and Robute. But never the less well made with some nice minis, cool. A good break from my usual beat, matt, batrap
That was only because they didn't do anything too important during the heresy that would cause them to suffer any significant loss of strength. Meaning everyone basically HAD to listen to Robert.
These Ultramarine's sound like they are one of the few loyalist space marines the emporium can truly count on for peace and and stability, unlike the other aggressive space marines who are like this, "Live for the emperor, obey the emperor, worship the emperor, serve only the emperor and you will be spared from his wrath and the wrath of his enemy's." this is what I think of some if not all of the space marines. Unless of course the ultramarine's are not different then I guess I'm better off with the Tau.
+Chris Crawford The Ultramarines are perhaps the only ones or one of the few strong enough Astartes not needing to pretend brutish fierceness to themselves and others around them quite all the time to give an impression of strength :)
COURAGE AND HONOUR !!!!!!! "We commend our souls to the Emperor. Let the story of our sacrifice burn across history like a shooting star. For death and for glory - for the Ultramarines!" "Remember the names of the honoured fallen, recall their deeds and know that their sacrifice honours the Chapter. No son of Guilliman could wish for a more glorious death."
Realy? We're talking about the 500 worlds of Ultramar just before Calth. Armatura was destroyed and several other worlds, but there had to be other worlds which could step up in these times. I guess, even after what happens in Empire Secundus, we will have to wait how things turn out.
Yes true, but bear in mind when he split the legions the Tau, Tyranids and Necrons weren't even known about. and a single chapter is more than capable of dealing with a small Waaaagh, anything larger they can just team up.
I prefer to think of it as the Ultramarines taking penitence for failing to defend the Emperor during his greatest time of need, is the main reason that motivated them to hold together Impirium together afterwards. No they didn't shoulder this burden alone, but they were better equipped and manned to do so soley because of their failure.
I do feel the need to highlight there are still true Ultramarine fans out there who still believe in balance and will love the Chapter regardless of how some favouritist douche beefs them up. And while I believe Rogal Dorn would have been the ideal choice to lead the Impirium [pretty much being second to the Emperor on Terra] after the Horus Heresy, it then wouldn't have allowed Roboute Guilliman to have enforced the splitting of legions into chapters.
this is all well and in-depth composed but is there, somewhere in the books or somewhere the story of why is this happening, why the humans are so involved in war and conquest, what are they fighting for so far from their home world...the main reason...
It's because they are recognized as the poster-boys of the space marines, and treated as the VERY BEST humankind has to offer even though lore-wise they've done the least for the Imperium.
well if it was not for the Ultramarines the imperium would have fallen apart and eventually fallen to the constant onslaught of alien races and chaos so that is pretty important but yes they do get to much attention and they are space marines and a pretty important chapter so they kind of are the best the humankind has to offer
Matt Ward has created 76 accounts it seems. And i assume the 301 viewings are the people who watched this and the + indicates all the times Matt Ward has watched this video. Which is hard to keep track on.
Horus made sure they couldn't interfere in the battle and they were heading back to Terra at full speed crushing any Chaos forces in their path but alas they cannot instantly teleport from the "south" fringe of the galaxy to Terra especially while under attack by the World Eaters and the Word Bearers
I can see that. But that's really the whole point of them. To be generic and simple for beginners to get a taste of Warhammer and most likely move on to a new faction or army. Difference with me is that I just didn't.
Matt "I write the codexes and I have no respect for the lore, in fact I want to bugger it with a 9 foot wide strap on just so my beloved ultramarines can be the best things in the galaxy" Ward.
The reason they where so fast with their conquest was because they where the largest legion, nothing more. xP Give Magnus the same number of Thousand sons and he would have conquered the Galaxy without blinking. xD
Sadly, these guys aren't really good warriors like people say. Their chapter is supposed to build empires. Other legions were made to wipe them out. And these guys did get messed up by the word bearers
Instrumental in saving the Imperium? Pffft because of his stupidity he almost caused a civil war when he tryed to force the other chapters to conform to his codex. Some of the most successful chapters still don't follow the codex,
I think it originated from how horribly overpowered they were and arguably still are. And also how they are stressed to be the greatest at everything... Considering they own 9 star system and not a single world like MOST space marine chapters... And how strictly they follow the Codex, that gets a little bit annoying. But other than that they are a fairly interesting chapter.
AH yes, the ulramarine homeworld, Craig. I also have fond memories of the blood ravens home world: George.
i prefer the chaos marine's world: Jamaal.
@@Slappaccino You mean "Jamie?"
Who dares to make fun of the Ultramarines? Tell us his name!
Isolde Baden "The Internet"
Id Shiro Your icon is marvelous, bro'.

Id Shiro ah, the nameless crowd of cowards
Although the Ultramarines may seem a little uninteresting, starched and emotionless, they are nonetheless an impressive army with formidable statistics. Garviel Loken "They have no known weaknesses" As long as Matt Ward writes them.
Plus, their chapter symbol is a toilet seat.
MiniWarGamer Dave, you are awesome!
+Garviel Loken I would say that they have no weaknesses, but no real strengths either. They're a "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" Legion/Chapter, while other Legions have strengths and weaknesses to counter the Ultramarines.
Subject Delta The Ultramarines are very strong when it comes to fighting off the Tyranids.
To people who keep telling them to do a specific video for a specific faction, I understand that you might want to just listen to things instead of reading, but these videos are just Lexicanum 40K articles. If you just want the information, just find the respective article on Lexicanum 40K.
Someone should upload a bunch of Smurf movies under the title Warhammer 40,000: Ultramarines Lore
Rowboat Girlyman is the only primarch who did absolutely nothing during the Heresy.
He cut off chaos re-enforcements on the way.
Unless your talking about the Sons of Horus no Legion did as well as the UItramarines .
He killed either alpharius or Omegon don't diss roubourte
deltaproductions113 He killed one of the Legion Alpharius/Omegon look-alikes.
Well the reports aren't reliable on both sides but I would say he killed alpharius or Omegon both of which are the worst primarchs in existence
For every new Warhammer 40K player that starts an Ultramarine army, the God Emperor hands 50,000 little girls over to the Dark Eldar and kills a kitten.
I highly doubt the God Emperor would ever consider killing a kitten.
And the greatest of them all are the Ultramarines!
If this video overwhelmed you, just silently weep while retaining this piece of knowledge: That you can never be an Ultramarine.
It's nice how you indirectly point out the unspoken obvious that scores of us secretly want to. While others out there do the same by pointing out how aggravating the Ultramarines noble perfection is, and how just about any other Chapter is cool but never the Ultra, no...
Hah, just pearl.
1:41 What an awesome paint job... that sword is epic!
"Striving for the common good" ultramarines are tau confirmed
Pretty interesting stuff, I could watch these videos for hours
He Dave could you make a lore vid on heresy?
Still my favorite Chapter .
largely the same, thing is ward made the ultras absolutely perfect in every way because they were his personal fav, saying they alone held the Imperium together after the heresy, and that all the other marines look up to them as exemplars. worst of all he pushed the other first founding chapters to the side giving them two or three paragraphs of fluff each, and stuffed it back with the second founding chapters like they weren't good enough to have their own fluff put up front.
I really like this vid. Very informative. I would like to see more of these vids 1 for each legion.
summary: Bad Stuff went down. The ultrasmurfs were conveniently on the other side of the galaxy at the time. Repeatedly.
Horus wanted him out of the way. There was a good reason for that.
lancer D getting tired of people hate fuck off
would love to see one on the blood ravens they are my favorite chapter
The codex is ultramarine made but the Imperial fists had mastered it. And our primarch had the honor of not being a puddle during the heresy
Roboute Guilliman wasn't a puddle, he was on the other side of the fucking galaxy kicking the shit out of some poor sods arse.
Correction -- It's Ultrasmurf, not Ultramarines
Their constant uninterrupted chanting is drilling into my skull as if they were the immensely sanctimonious lovechild of tinnitus and a jackhammer. agitatisultramarinidominitisultramarini The pain of a million ripped out nosehairs are but a tender massage compared to this inexpressible ultratorture.

Will say this also. The Ultramarines Omnibus 1 and 2 are both amazing reads.. I highly recommend them.
I always thought the primarch of the ultramarines was the emperor, boy was I wrong
For Ultramar, for Guilliman, for the Imperium!
Ultramarines are my second favorite Chapter/Legion, behind the Imperial Fists. Romans and Holy Romans! What's not to like?
Ultramarine Player here.. what an awesome history oratory!

Well I just randomly got recommended this video, nice
I didn't realise they were chapter 13 as well.
That makes them go from just mary sues to flat out 2deep4u sues.
Thanks for sharing, I'm both informed & inspired.
Well thanks for this, I definitely wouldn't have taken the time to read their history. Now I know more!
I would please suggest to you that you do Blood Ravens next [insert pleading smiley here]
They were the only chapter close to its original strength. They were not broken like other chapters. They were bloodied.
COURAGE AND HONOUR !!!!!!!
"We commend our souls to the Emperor. Let the story of our sacrifice burn across history like a shooting star. For death and for glory - for the Ultramarines!"
"Remember the names of the honoured fallen, recall their deeds and know that their sacrifice honours the Chapter. No son of Guilliman could wish for a more glorious death."
After the poisoning of Roboute, Leman Russ went after them, and Leon was thinking of is next move...
Can you guys PLEASE do a Tau history vid and maybe some vids on some of the more well known Imperial Guard units. Like the Cadian SHock Troop?
You forgot the bit about Roboute Gulliman forming Imperius Secondus because he thought that Terra was already lost.
Are there books dating before the time of the Horus Heresy books, with how the Primarchs grew up in their worlds?
I never really hated the Ultramarines, but I didn't really remember this fluff. After watching this video I realised that they're actually really cool
Realy? We're talking about the 500 worlds of Ultramar just before Calth.
Armatura was destroyed and several other worlds, but there had to be other worlds which could step up in these times.
I guess, even after what happens in Empire Secundus, we will have to wait how things turn out.
This actually made me like the Ultramarines. Was a there a 40k history for more chapters in the vault?
Rogal Dorn is very important in the Codax and the story of the Space Marine
Yes true, but bear in mind when he split the legions the Tau, Tyranids and Necrons weren't even known about. and a single chapter is more than capable of dealing with a small Waaaagh, anything larger they can just team up.

No they didn't shoulder this burden alone, but they were better equipped and manned to do so soley because of their failure.
There already is one, it's animated and the story was written by Dan Abnett
the best, the elite, the really not so few, the blue, the marines, the ultramarines
Why can the speaker not pronounce Roboute's name...listen to the Horus Heresy Audiobooks for the proper way.
Could you please do Imperial Fists? Considering they have a supplement coming out, if would be cool to see a video for them.
What's the song called
Sorta funny but Ultralmar is the name of a Canadian oil compagny who has many gas station
this is all well and in-depth composed but is there, somewhere in the books or somewhere the story of why is this happening, why the humans are so involved in war and conquest, what are they fighting for so far from their home world...the main reason...
With the possible exception of Russ no other Loyalist Primarch was responsible for so many of his brother's betrayals as Guiliman.
he basically does what he wants. he'll retcon the fluff of an army than make them stupidly OP like the Blood Angels or Grey Knights
It's because they are recognized as the poster-boys of the space marines, and treated as the VERY BEST humankind has to offer even though lore-wise they've done the least for the Imperium.

Please do some more about the traitor legions/Chaos gods. Pretty please. :)
This is why I play the super special successor chapter "The hairy fists".... yeah they touch themselves at night a lot.
Do Raven Guard history next please!
I love your voice its soooo creepy and mysterious :D
indeed brother, very creepy
Ultramarines live longer with Calgar
Darklordmatt M'agneus *tips pauldron*
lol
there needs to be a 40k movie
If that's what your interpretation of the loyalists are, then you've never seen more than the Ultramarines and their successors.
Do a history of the SW next! :)
Fear the space smurfs! There is only Matt Ward, and he is our shield and protector.
It's not so much that its hate towards the Ultramarines themselves, its hate towards Matt Ward and the changes to their lore.
A QUARTER OF A MILLION ultramarines before the heresy? jeeze.
I learnt a lot, but boy it was difficult to keep my eyes open as the voice droned on and on in a monotone zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Could you do the raven guard next
I can see that. But that's really the whole point of them. To be generic and simple for beginners to get a taste of Warhammer and most likely move on to a new faction or army. Difference with me is that I just didn't.
Why dont you guys make these warhammer history videos anymore?
Everyone forgets why Guilliman truly made Ultramar.
Matt "I write the codexes and I have no respect for the lore, in fact I want to bugger it with a 9 foot wide strap on just so my beloved ultramarines can be the best things in the galaxy" Ward.
What music do they use?
Been looking for years now
The reason they where so fast with their conquest was because they where the largest legion, nothing more. xP Give Magnus the same number of Thousand sons and he would have conquered the Galaxy without blinking. xD
Great summary!
Sadly, these guys aren't really good warriors like people say. Their chapter is supposed to build empires. Other legions were made to wipe them out. And these guys did get messed up by the word bearers
Except, you know, holding it together in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy. That's pretty big.
But the ultramrines conically deviate from the codex pretty often
I'm aware of their OPness seeing as just about everyone plays them at my store.
is the sound off a little in this video, or am i having a stroke?
i liked this video...very insightful
Smurfs were strong!!!! I would Liked to see them in those sizes.
And now that you introduced yourself, enjoy the video :)
oops. In the viedo I post, read the descripction you guys should feel speical. :) Leave a comment as proof you guys saw it please. Love your company
Oh i thought you were talking about the Grey Knights for a second
kinda silly for the ultimate tactician robert to not see that coming don't you think :/
next 40k History: Iron Warriors :D

hold your horses mate. Eldar in able hands will decimate your chaos boys 9 times out of 10.
