If all you care about is the look or image quality, then the Nikon D100 is only $40-100 USD used, lol. Same sensor! I think what most still photographers don’t understand is that the survival of film has nothing to do with stills. Besides the fact that BW photography film will probably always be around as an artistic tool the life of color film, at least Kodak color film is entirely dependent on movies. For Kodak photography film is a side thing, it’s a fraction of their film sales and their production. They couldn’t keep their production going with photography film alone because even now, after it’s been scaled down to a minimum, and sales have quadrupled, it would be impossible for them to make it at that scale. Kodak makes basically all their money from film manufacturing with motion picture film. Even a small indy film that doesn’t do many takes and shoots on 16mm goes through more film than the most insane professional film photographer. Just in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic the big Hollywood studios singed another contact with Kodak to shoot and release a minimum of movies on film. Big Hollywood movies, indy films, TV shows, international movies, art projects, and commercials are still shot on film every day. And while it’s no where near where it was when film was the only option, it is still enough for Kodak to make a profit on film now. Something they haven’t done for a decade. With Nolan, PTA, and Tarantino burning through massive amounts of film every three year with them still watching film dailies the question whether color film will survive does not lie with still photographers but with movie directors. Because they are the ones who can really push for the use of film on a large enough scale. And so far things have been extremely stable the last three years.

But whilst the videos that you produce are amazing, and always about amazing pieces of gear. your shots in every video retain that same ability to bring out interesting angles, light, shapes and form no matter what gear your using. Actually watching multiple videos on your channel over the last few months has the opposite effect of promoting any piece of gear for me Ace.... actually its great proof that the shot is in the eye and creativity of the photographer. Great skills and great eye man. Love it
I just recently picked up an R-D1! There's also the S (basically the same but with a firmware upgrade) and the X which can support up to 32gb cards I think. This is one of my favorite cameras and I brought it to Thailand instead of my RX1RII and had no regrets. Was harder to get a good photo, but the photos that came out well were spectacular right out of the camera. The 1.5 crop factor did force me to go with a 21mm lens just to get closer to a 35mm looking frame, and there's a slight slight vignetting but all just minor inconveniences.
Why do I keep watching videos about camera gear I have absolutely no interest in ever knowing anything about. Yet, here i am again. You're a legend, dude!
Your videos are always awesome, but I am here to say that I'm most impressed that you can get cool/non-cliche photos of Detroit that also aren't "ruin porn". Well done.
This is an absolute masterpiece and such a pleasure to watch. That first scene "I was there, the day film died" gave me chills. Absolutely sublime film making.
insane video- so well done. I own two D-100s simply for the sensor because its honestly so good. love that you featured the RD-1 and glad you own one. cant find them anywhere!
I love everything you do from the bottom of my heart! Your videos are transcending my mind and filling my heart with so much joy of being creative and wanting to create myself. Thank you!
Last night I checked to see if a new video had been posted and how long it had been since the previous one. These certainly take time to produce, especially among many demands on his time. And then this evening - a new video! I have an R-D1s and it is quite wonderful in its own way.
The R-D1 is my grail camera. Something is captivating about the analog dial at the top. Maybe since it ties into another hobby of mine with watches. If there was ever a camera due for a retro revival, its this. Now if fuji could just get the rights. Although I'm sure they'd cram and x-trans inside instead of a CCD. Hmmm
Cant wait for you to do an xt5 review. Your xt3 review is still one if my fav vids i constantly go back to. The cinematography and music choice is perfect.
@@nerucheung I was gonna say, you gotta put Danny on there. Gawx Art is another one, maybe not what you'd think of traditionally as filmmaking, but that kid is super talented all across the board. His edits are wild.
Wow these photos are incredible - this seems to have colours unlike any other digital camera. What you said at the end about a camera that is more fun to use Vs a camera that is technically superior is so true - that's why I've gone back to the old Ricoh gr II over the GR IIIx. You should review a Ricoh camera btw, I think you could get some amazing results with customising their image presets, especially the older GR/GR II.
Yes, the colors are beautiful! This camera, like the Leica M8 and M9 families and some early Nikon digitals (and possibly others of that era), use CCD sensors which provide a rich color rendering which differs from the later CMOS sensors.
I still have my Nikon D100 for it's CCD sensor. It always renders amazing images as well. Someone asked me about hog good my camera must be. I laughed when I told them it was over 20 years old. You can get these for 50.00 all day long if you look around. Something to be said about the CCD sensors. I am sure the color science is different in the Epson. However I have been more than happy with the D100.
This isn’t a review. This is a brilliant award worthy dystopian future epic. I mean seriously, my god. This was the best “review” I’ve ever seen. I was enthralled by it the entire time. Frick, man. Bravo. Subbed and looking forward to all of your content from here on out.
Nicely done video! I still have a Canon F1 film camera & Contax N1 film camera that I will never sell. These cameras are still working perfectly, since the day that I bought them.
OMG! Thanks for mentioning that the Nikon D100 has the same CCD snsor. That means you can prettyt much get the same image type for just a fraction of the cost of the RD1, 30-40 bucks to be exact. I actually had two D100 setting in a box forever. I brought them out thanks to your video. I will have to say the images out of the D100 are pretty much an RD1. Yes the D100 is not as cool and does not physically feel like a film camera but the photos are what counts in the end and for the very inexpencive prise the D100 goes for, it's a no brainer!
I love my R-D1, but had to laugh when you said the viewfinder is one of the best you’ve ever seen on a rangefinder. Yes, it’s nice to view your scene at 1:1, but the actual rangefinder is atrocious. Beautiful video, I agree wholeheartedly that the tactile experience of the R-D1 may be it’s best feature. I wish Voightländer would make an updated digital rangefinder to compete with Leica.
You see a GXAce film pop up, you drop everything and watch :)

insane video- so well done.
Thank you!
Another masterpiece! Thank you GX for this are videos and to show us unknown cameras like this
The increase in quality from your original video is insane. Keep it up
Last night I checked to see if a new video had been posted and how long it had been since the previous one. These certainly take time to produce, especially among many demands on his time. And then this evening - a new video!
I have an R-D1s and it is quite wonderful in its own way.
Quality is king! Very nice work Gx
Been waiting for a new GXAce video to the point that I was binge watching his videos all day🎉
Amazing effort! Love your work Cas!
the production value of your videos is insane man keep it up!
I was waiting to come this camera on this channel...
REALLY LOVE IT !!!!!
Gx has to be the only filmmaker in the youtube space who's work is actually insanely good!!
Danny Gevirtz is an other one I can think off
How about James Lee. His videos also has insanely high production quality and a very unique style
@@nerucheung I was gonna say, you gotta put Danny on there. Gawx Art is another one, maybe not what you'd think of traditionally as filmmaking, but that kid is super talented all across the board. His edits are wild.
Nah. He’s way up there (my fave) but you’re underestimating how much talent is out there.

Oh wow GxAce did a remake! Really cool to see how your style and skills have evolved
I find so much inspiration in your videos.
You’re production value is over level 9000!!!!! I love your videos I wish you made them all the time
Wow these photos are incredible - this seems to have colours unlike any other digital camera.
Wow! This was so good! not only loving the world in your videos but I love the products you talk about.
I feel like I just watch a movie! This was AMAZINGLY shot and edited! 👏
Masterful cinematics and photography, happy to be your patron, Gx!
You need to make a full feature film bro. Your content is off the hook !
I don't care much about older cameras and yet I've watched every single one of these videos. So cool. I love that neofuturistic brutalism.
Omg, I was just recently thinking that Fuji should add a film rewind lever to their cams. People would love it, I think.
How this channel hasn't completely blown up yet is one of the biggest mysteries of mankind.
It never gets any less exciting seeing one of your videos!
I can't believe nobody's making a modern r-d1, fuji seems to be the only ones trying lmao
pixii is making a modern rangefinder with APS-C sensor
When GxAce uploads the day is already 100x better
We need an RD-2 !!!
Cannot tell you how long I’ve been waiting for another GxAce video! Soooo good
Incredible production value. Good as any feature film! Wow!
The King has made his return 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏. Beautiful video as always. Love the shots of Downtown Detroit
The highest level youtube videos there are. Yet another masterpiece.
