    🔧 Search "Chromebox" on eBay - ebay.to/3irYF1g
By default, Chromebox hardware only supports running ChromeOS... but this can be overcome. In this video, I use MrChromebox.tech's firmware flashing utility to free a Chromebox from this limitation and make it boot just like a "normal" computer. You'll need to remove the write-protection screw from inside your Chromebox first... you can see how that's done in my other videos (the screw’s location will vary depending on your Chromebox brand and model). Follow these steps and you'll be running the operating system of your choice in no time, and you'll be able to replace your SSD with a larger one too, if you like. You can support this channel by buying a Chromebox or upgrade parts via this ebay link: ebay.to/3irYF1g
Purchases made via clicking the outbound links to eBay in this video description help financially support this channel thanks to the eBay Partner Network.

@danimationstips Hi sir I currently have Ubuntu on the standard chromebox CN62 16gb ssd with 16gb ram. I don't like windows 10 and prefer 7 .
Will I be able to run windows 7 okay and successfully install drivers etc for the hardware ?

    Many thanks, it worked!
Note for anyone using ASUS Chromebox 3 (CN65) TEEMO: As per the mrchromebox supported device table it requires both screw and CR50, however the CR50 steps can and should be omitted. Otherwise, by following the CR50 steps you might get into trouble as it happened to me and end up stuck without being able to open the dev console anymore (with ctrl+alt+f2) after using the "sudo gsctool -a -o" command. The solution for this is Turning ON the OS verification again (which will wipe the data) then turn it OFF once again and start from scratch, which will allow you to open the dev console again. Omit the CR50 steps and just follow this video.

If you see this, can you tell me how it's worked out? I have the same device, and am thinking of doing the same as you. Does it run fine once it's installed, or is there some post-installation work to do? Would you say it runs as smooth or better than on ChromOS? I've used Mr. Chromebox's tricks to install PopOS on an EOL Chromebook, I'm a big fan of his work.

You are the man !! Thank you ! I received a notice my chromebook (Acer 15 CB3-532) would no longer receive security updates after June. This thing is like new and I still get over 6 hours from the battery with max brightness. I am very experienced with Linux, but was having difficulty after installing a Legacy bios. I am so happy I came across your video ! The UEFI bios was the solution, and makes for a much cleaner install. I now have Linux Mint 20.3 xfce installed, and with the exception of no sound, everything was working perfect. The sound issue was resolved in about 10 minutes after a google search. Needed to replace the alsa driver script, log out and back in and it now works. The only issue is the 16gb eMMC, which is not easily replaceable on this model. Because of that, I permanently installed a tiny 32gb usb flash drive which I made my /home partition. After dedicating 500mb for the EFI bios, 2gb to swap, the install and all updates, and adding Dropbox only, I have 4.4gb free on the eMMc. I have been using the system for several hours now and it is completely stable. F Google. Thanks again !

Thanks Benjamin. Chromeboxes are cheap and versatile computers at the entry level, good for casual/general computing, streaming servers, security systems and media servers. The high end ones are also suitable for gaming and other more demanding tasks, like animation, video production etc. They are also very energy efficient, comparable to running a laptop or better.

    Just a side note:
In my case (Asus Chromebox 2 CN62) after performing all the steps, my keyboard didn't seem to work. I panicked 1st as I used my rapoo wireless keyboard which is my daily device. I tried a Jelly Comb but nothing. And then weirdly a rapoo wireless airmouse+keyboard worked. So what I wanted to say is that if the keyboard doesn't work, try another one or another one. My device has a ZorinOS on now :)

Used this to install Fedorz 34 and Ubuntu 20.04 on my Dell Chromebook (Kefka).
Noticed something weird. Touchscreen and sounded worked perfect on Fedora 34, but after I installed updates, touchscreen and sound stopped working. Likewise, on Ubuntu 20.04, sound didn't work on a fresh install, but after I changed repositories to the "devel" branch in place of "focal" and ran a "sudo apt dist-upgrade" and rebooted, sound was working perfectly.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Bear Dogg. I'm glad you were able to troubleshoot your own problems. I had an interesting time running Ubuntu on a Chromebook, with some sound problems... the one I recall clearly was that the HDMI out would sent picture but not sound. I ended up switching to Gallium OS and I'm very happy with the move. I'm going to make a video on the subject sometime. Apparently Gallium OS was designed specifically for use with de-googled Chromebooks. You might like to give it a shot yourself.

      @danimationstips  3 роки тому

Yes Sean, the process and principles are the same regardless of which operating system you want to install.
Before you install Cloud Ready, I recommend you make sure your SSD has a capacity greater than 16GB. Many Chromeboxes only have 16GB storage inside and for Cloud Ready, it's a good idea to switch to 32GB or more.
You can pick up a suitable SSD via eBay using the affiliate links in my video description if you'd like to help support this channel.
      Good luck with your upgrade.

@@jtltrading2899 Choosing your operating system really depends on what you plan to do with your computer. CloudReady seems to be a good choice if you want easy access to Google services and you want to collaborate with people who use ChromeOS devices. For example, there are some Linux distributions that are geared towards use as media servers and other specialty purposes. Ubuntu is a good, accessible all-rounder and a good substitute for Windows or MacOS. GalliumOS is the best choice for Chromebooks, as their soundcards are not supported by some Windows versions and some other Linux distros.

Hi Taipan, good question. The process is slightly different if you only have a wi-fi connection... In that case, you'll need to enter ChromeOS, and enter a terminal/shell environment from there, then use the same set of command lines.
