Being confined without daily nature for long periods? They deserve the best food experience possible. Thank you, Gentlemen, for your commitment and service.
My grandfather reported for duty to his first submarine in 1936 (USS S-46). No matter what modern sub food looks like, it would have been a feast to him.
In the 70s I ate lunch frequently at a cafe operated by two retired Navy chefs. They roasted two large hunks of meat every day, with loads of comfort food sides. There was nothing fancy there. The food was A#1 delicious and reasonably priced. Such a treat.
I was in USN from 1963 to 1967 active duty .... best food of my life , the food at the sub base at Pearl Harbor was so good , fresh pineapple , melon , breakfast cooked in front of you, how you wanted .... Christmas Dinner was world class ... I am 79 today and that food was better than moms (sorry mom) and on DDG-11 .. USS Sellers ....pretty good food, lots of roast beef , more roast beef , even more roast beef and sos on a shingle ( that stuff was addicting ) and finally a cook that cook make mouth watering bear claws ....
Submarine guys should have the very best food. It's a damn dangerous occupation, where you can be in peacetime and still every day may be your last one.
Sailors undergo intensive testing to determine their fitness for submarine duty. No one with proven claustrophobia is accepted under any circumstances.
Me as a dutch sailor remembered that americans and canadians wanted dutch bread and i prefered the night snacks at canadian and american ships during crosspolling
Would suck for your introverted ass to be anywhere in the rest of the sub though, you don’t even get your own bed. You sleep in the same bed as possibly 3 other guys who sleep in different shifts than you and in a small room with 8 other people. There’s also almost nowhere on the sub for you to be alone at all
Watching this video reminds me that when I was in the Army as a cook many years ago that everyone knew that the NAVY and the AIR FORCE got the best food and not even the MARINES no way. But I could out cook the NAVY and the AIR force and they knew it, not that I am boasting but seeing is believing, I could make the whole food menu for the BATTALION and I did it all the time, given the equipment that we were given, even c rations is MRES.
as a former army special forces officer, i’ve eaten the food of all four branches in their various bases. Navy had the best chow hands down but I was on Army bases where the NCO in charge chef was exceptional and award winning and beat the hell out of anything that I had had from a navy base. The cooks of SF group may have not been award winning but I will attest that I never had one damn complaint about what they served us when we where in the field and was always happy to get in line for chow when it was time.
Wow times have changed, when I was in the Navy we got mashed potatoes with the peeling still on. And they are way better that way. Spoiled today, peeling potatoes for mashed potatoes "Come on Man" :) and submariners have it lucky eating under the waves. Believe me trying to eat topside in a storm is an experience you'll never forget.
The term "Chef" oftentimes is used to classify cooks when in reality the Navy "Chef" is someone who has completed Navy cooking school. Take Jacques Pepin or Julia Child for an example. These two people are Chefs from the gitgo. They trained for years and traveled around the world learning their craft. Before some of you try to hammer me with rebuttal I am taking nothing away from Navy cooks, especially the sub cooks. One of our cooks went to the White House as a kitchen staff member. But if you called him a "Chef" to his face he would he would laugh at you.
That was my job on board a nuclear aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy.i was in the Persian Gulf war. I'm lucky to be alive safe away from any sea snakes!!!😅

I still cannot understand why personnel on navy vessels have to wear camouflage uniforms. who are they hiding from? the senior officers? they look like prisoners in a work camp. bring back traditional wear. solid blues de rigour.
Ok Basic's is fresh food only lasts so long. So after a few weeks these crews are eating processed food. Your crew health will go down after this time. No amount of Pr changes this. Looks great for the camera but in real life ???

I really admire the dedication and hard work of soldiers who work on submarines. Lot of sacrifice and great service by the troops.
These sailors are artist when it comes to food!
Except the one using a grill cleaning pad holder to press the hamburger meat down.

What kind of meals did they have then??
I listen to a lot of WW2 history audiobooks (insomnia) and many get into the gally on the subs of that era - what a different, yet similar, world.

Sun mariners eat good because, food is a moral booster when you spend so much time under water.

I would LOVE to be a submarine cook. My introverted ass just in the kitchen 8 hours a day listening to music, washing dishes, cooking.

The worst food I ever ate in the military was from an army defac at Fort Lee Virginia. Wouldn’t even serve their own slop had civies serving.

It’s because the space is so tight so if they are camouflaged then it looks like they aren’t there making the space look bigger.
