I think this is my favorite smarthistory video. Dr. Beth Harris and Dr. Steven Zucker have such good voices. They so accurately voice the emotion and energy of the painting.
I likely would never have known this painting existed were it not for Coldplay. I remember buying 'Viva la Vida' upon its release in 2008 and thinking just how marvelous the painting on the cover was. Thank you to whoever was responsible for designing the cover art. It truly is an exquisite work of art.
We visited the Louvre in February 2018. The place was practically empty. We got to take our time in the Red Room. The Delacroix next to the Raft of Medusa is an unforgettable sight.
I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own I used to roll the dice, feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listen as the crowd would sing Now the old King is dead, long live the King One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain Once you go there was never Never an honest word And that was when I ruled the world It was the wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn't believe what I'd become Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh who would ever want to be king? I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world...
This one is irresistible to me today. I hope to stride across my own barricades and lead myself to liberty soon enough. I'm not sure how King Charles was considered "reactionary," but look forward to learning more about French history as my studies continue. It's apparently something to do with his conservatism, but I don't know what that means in a practical sense or why the French people were so angry about it. From the classical profile of Liberty's face, to the unity of classes fighting a common enemy to the rowdy pistol kid, I enjoyed hearing the various elements that went into this. I wonder what that planning process was like for Delacroix. And what a journey this painting has taken since it's creation... That's how you know it has power. Fascinating.
I JUST REALIZED MY IDENTITY TODAY....I JUST REALIZED THAT THIS PAINTING SYMBOLIZES THAT I RELATE TO LADY LIBERTY. HEY BROS, HOMIES, AMIGOS, MATES, I am Lady Liberty. My patriotism is global. But my heart will ALWAYS fall back to Europe and the Americas. Like to the point where I stood in the pose on the cover of the musical Hamilton and I wanted to freeze that moment. That was a moment I will NEVER forget....Liberty Leading the People HI HELLO
And the French are doing it again as we speak right now Viva la France! Strength stand strong French brothers and sisters from America I have all the respect and admiration for you all!
Great video as always! But, I would like more on what specifically make Delacroix's painting romantic. To me it is almost pre-realism with the themes of class, change and the horrors of reality and the fact the Delacroix wants to instigate ideological debate.
I think it's safe to say it's not firmly planted in one category or the other, it's a blend of romantic and realist. I think they mention it fits in with the Romantic period strictly because of Liberty being the lead personification and dominant character of the painting. But there are too many other elements, too much other stuff going on for it to be thought of as one or the other, IMO.
I do hear Coldplay's music in the background, it almost moves the desperate, fighting, figures, in the painting to revolution!🇫🇷 Vive la France! 🤔 Viva la vida! 🎵
Delacroix Horse's Eyes by Nicholas Siderakis When viewing the painter's masterpiece (The Massacre of Chios) Look at the Massacre ! Don't see it ? Stare into Delacroix horse's sorrowful round eyes They're a gateway, a portal The horse distraught and horrified Its white mane stained red By Chians in bondage Tyrants ready to sell them in Constantinople's markets Or to slaughter them like cattle by the thousands Oh! Look all around you I tell ya Tears trickling down mastic trees stem For they are living witnesses to the carnage Stare even deeper into Delacroix horse's eyes If a picture could speak a million words This would be it
I think it has happened too many times All over the world including in french history Even during the reign of macron There was the yellow vest incident
VIVA LA FRANCE I AM LADY LIBERY HELLO I DON'T DISCRIMINATE also side note--i stood like Hamilton on the cover--the playbill--and it took me a minute to realize what I was doing.
Blegh, Delacroix, one of my least favorite artists. But anywho will you guys go see the Michelangelo exhibition at the Met during Novemeber? It'll have 150 drawings made by him.

Best observed with La Marseillaise playing full blast in your ears.
One of my favorite paintings. Great video.

Watching this as freedom loving people take to the streets of Paris once again this week.. vive la france

Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain

Beautiful painting. I hope I can see it one day in person.
The painting was restored and returned to its place at the Louvre that day! 🙂
Perhaps the best piece at the Louvre.
God I love you guys!
Thank you for reaching out.
Beautiful
Spot-on. Thank you.
Delacroix
Es una pintura bellísima, además muy importante para los liberales como yo.
Anyone else notice how she had the camera aimed at herself 0:08

Linda pintura de Delacroix inspiração para todos nós artistas plásticos 🇧🇷🎺🌍🇧🇷🌠🎻🌍🎷🌃🌞
A lot of people including French think this painting is about the 1789 Revolution and don't know anything about the 1830 Three Glorious Days
And some people think it was painted during the Commune de Paris (1871)

Gavroche!!!
True, they said Hugo was inspired by this painting when writing Les Misérables, and Gavroche was modeled based on the boy on the right.
