Reviews:
"I'm surprised that previous viewers did not recognize the plot premise of The Man Who Came To Dinner for this Bonanza episode. True that there was not the constant name dropping of prominent 30s celebrities. But John Carradine who hurts his foot caught up springtime fever horse play the Cartwright sons are engaged in just stays on and gets the boys and even Lorne Greene to do some disagreeable tasks.
Carradine is a miserly old banker and he assigns Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, and Michael Landon all jobs about his properties. Best of the small stories involves Little Joe trying to evict squatter John Qualen. Michael Landon is not cut out to be a process server.
In the meantime Carradine lives the Life Of Riley at the Ponderosa with Lorne Greene getting fed up catering to him and his aphorism quoting laziness.
Very funny story with John Carradine hamming it up to beat the band." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"It's springtime on the Ponderosa and the Cartwight boys are itching to let loose. It just so happens that a friend of Ben's, Jedediah Milbanks (John Carradine) a banker from California, has some business in the area and is coming by the ranch for a visit. Upon his arrival Milbanks is injured when the Cartwright boys get into a mud fight in a small pond. Needless to say Ben is not happy with his sons when he finds out that Milbanks has an injured leg. But we learn that the injury is really not bad but Milbanks has a plan where he will not have to handle his business and will let the Cartwright boys do his dirty work.
It just so happens Milbanks has three chores. One is given to each to complete since they were the one that caused the injury. Joe is to go remove a squatter from some property Milbanks owns. Hoss is to buy a piece of property from a young couple. And Adam is to evict a family from a house when the family falls on hard times and cannot pay the mortgage. But when the Cartwright boys see the situation that they have been assigned it will not work out like exactly as wanted by Milbanks.
This is one of those Bonanza episodes that made the series so enduring. Each situation is played out just like we would expect a Cartwright to handle. And each story is interesting in itself. John Carradine is excellent as the tight-wad banker and gives one of his better performances. This episode provides all the good things we think when we remember the series." One of my favorite Bonanza episodes. The opening scene where Adam, Hoss, and Little Joe fight each other is absolutely priceless.
Ben sure raised his sons right. They may all have different personalities but they all have a heart of gold and will go out their way to help a person.
In real life they all were good men ❤🙌
I'm embarrassed to tell how many times I've watched this episode. My favorite one all around. Funny, no shootings, moral lessons and no dead fiancees.
I love this, especially with my favorite actor, Pernell Roberts, aka Adam. I too love this and watch it repeatedly. We need TV like this. Bonanza was often not much of a realistic adult western as advertised, but there was 25% of the shows that were good.
I watch over & over Adam (and Hoss) in the first season, in "The Hopefuls," where Adam & Hoss get a wagon train through a part of the country.
Why embarrassed?
Hey me to. Do not miss a day watching
I can't count how many times
. @wally1452 If you could wear out a tape on UA-cam, that scene in the barn with Adam would be worn out.
One of my very favorite episodes that never fails to choke me up. The kindness and understanding shown by the brothers to those less fortunate and struggling is the perfect example of how we should all strive to help our neighbors, especially in these trying times.
Well said brother
I absolutely agree!!!
This episode shows how the world should be.
Encouraging words 🙂
If only the rich could learn this lesson
This episode clearly proves what good values Ben had thought his boys...❤
taught :)
I laughed so hard when they were fighting in the mud--SO FUNNY!!! This episode is hysterical and masterfully comedic!
Oh yeah! , and the top falling on the old man's head at the end too!
They were masters of comedy! 😂
My favourite episode too, but the episode that got me in stitches, is the Wooing of Abigail Jones..I have the best laugh
And Adam singing that old English madrigal. He had a great voice.
Try "Three Brides for Hoss".
Thank you so much for the Bonanza uploads - wish the world was still this simple!
Meeeee toooooo ❤️❤️
Me too
The world is, it's just full of simpletons, how can't you see that?
I agree with you 🤠
Simple for whom?
Season 3 is so good. Must be different writers. Not just bad guys in town shoot em up go to jail episodes. I love these warm and funny and leaves me with a good feeling at the end.
I'm 60 years old and I grew up watching Bonanza and after all this years I m still watching it , my favorite show by far.
Thank you for sharing !!!

Me too! I'm 67 and I love watching Bonanza. Thank you Grjngo for posting your You Tubes. So much appreciated!
This is both amusing and so very true.... God Bless You.
Same and thanks to for posting so we can all watch. :)
The three of them fighting has me in stitches 🤣😂🤣
Terrific episode with good lessons built in. Jedediah looks so funny as he rode away with his head sticking out of the carriage roof 😁
Lesson one, you get what you pay for . Lol.
The fight at the beginning 😂 Just imagining the puppy riding the horse in Hoss's shirt.
I have been watching Bonanza for years and have everything maybe twice. Every time I watch and pretty much know the outcome, I can't help but think about all the fun they had creating these shows. As most of you, wish I could have met them in person. Great shows.
And very good actors! My advice: Don't read much about their "behind-the-scenes feelings, etc" kind of a bring-down.
The 3 brothers in the opening scene is just...TOO FUNNY!😂🤣😅😆
I know, I was just cracking up🤣😂🤣
Yeah, that was hilarious 😂!
Agreed.
I was half expecting Hoss to come back with the black puppy too.
Same. Wish that puppy became a member of the main cast. I mean where did it go did they give the puppy to a kid ?
@@BlackangelKatakuri Hop Sing got a hold of it! 😮
The Cartwright brothers did the exact same thing I would have done with each one of those families and the squatter. God put us here to help one another. To be a blessings. A wonderful Bonanza.
@@rodneywalchly4156 They committed genocide against the natives.

Lovely comment-!!
Television at its’ best.
Loved the squatter's easy going attitude while trying to teach little Joe to not be so high strung.
This sure looks like the perfect trap for any rebellious person such as thieves .
Easy for him to be like that though when he's just freeloading. If he ever had to work hard to get some land to own I bet he would start to sound very different when squatters showed up on it.
@@linsqopiring6816 The show presents him as working very hard to make a living on the land, though the man makes it SOUND easy!
@@linsqopiring6816 After all, what is the miserly old owner shown doing but kicking good people off his land?
@@93Jubilee 19:25 he sure does make it sound easy just listen to that time stamp. So what exactly does the show do to "present him as working very hard"? Fishing in the creek all day that's literally in the back year? That's a lush piece of land if there ever was one. So how does the show present him as "hard working" compared to anyone else in those times who didn't have such nice land to live on who had to work a LOT harder.
This is one of my favorite episodes! “The Crucible” is my all-time favorite! I still love Bonanza after 50+ years! Thank you for these gems!
Happy you enjoyed the episode. "The Crucible" is coming up soon, so keep your eyes open for more! 🤠✌🍿📺
This episode is one of my favorites! Love it when Hoss hits Adam and Adam and Joe both fall down. Dadburnitttt!!!
I was too young to appreciate bonanza but it's been great to rediscover. Thanks for bringing it back.
Aren't they,Gems😎
These are what we see this country built up on spooky wonderful
My heart is warm and full of love!
What a great episode!!! ❤️
lovely touching episode! The world today is need of that bit of caring and sharing! thus leads into a happy living planet! How would it be then ,the God himself is delighted!
I love that folks portrayed, who are wealthy actually sweat themselves and not on the backs of others. There's a message here
Love how Joe never hesitated to get into a brawl with big ole Hoss.... Brothers
I enjoy Bonanza as long as Pernell Roberts is in them. Had a good laughing episode in the beginning.
ditto.
"I'm not paying, I'm sharing."... If only this idea could be more widespread today.
@Nica What wuld you like me to share? The most I have is probably bad advice...😆
@@noneedtoknow2870 🤣🤣🤣
They do have this idea today, it's called communism. And if you like it so much why don't you move to china or russia?
I often think in many ways this episode is the twin to " the Legacy".
The characters of the boys and positive success of Ben's parenting being tested and displayed. Makes a father's heart feels good to know his teachings were received. His children set good examples. (of course, the opening scene- mud fight- and humor throughout are great pluses😁)
as I watched it kinda reminded of the one I watched early today. The Legacy
Agreed. Springtime, The Legacy and The Gift of Water are my favorites.
@@SSKing-iy8kr Cant say I rembr "The Gift of Water"-will have to go watch. The ones with Hoss are definitely my favorite. The episodes with him tug at your heartstrings but also seem to have a more depth to them- to me.( right now I think esp of " A house divided". Where Hoss is the one who is left at home with Pa.(and I doubt it had anything to do with him being born 'midway-on the journey''; I believe it was just his character). Adam may have had the brains to help make the dream of the Ponderosa, but I believe Hoss is who had what it takes to make that dream live on.He truly saw it as " home "- where the heart is.( There was the episode where Adam was tempted to leave- when Joe was shot and sick; and when Joe wanted to leave, with his half brother.I dont recall one where Hoss wanted to leave.Get married, yes, but not leave. Ps: I love the sceneries esp when he went away to those " secret spots":)
How's was really good in The Wish and A Stranger Passed this Way.
@@katherinejones3057 he was great in The Wish with Ossie Davis
Don't care what no one say, I like Adam, always have, always will
Me too! Bonanza lost out when he left...wish they had come to some compromise that would have made him stay! If wishes were horses as they say!
As a child, I liked Adam the best. I thought he was so good looking and as a mature adult I still think so!
It was hilarious when Hoss fell in the mud and the mules took off and he had to bring the poles all by himself, then hit Little Joe with a pole so he fell into Adam and he knocked the poles over so they start fighting and hoss says " If you are looking for a fight you are going to get one" then Little Joe and Adam gang up on Hoss and Hoss and Adam basically almost choke Little Joe cause he is squashed in the middle 🤣
Oh and don't forget when they had that mud fight
18:36. Little Joe told the guy to leave, and he replied, "oh I'd just as soon not.". Hah!!! 🙂
All of the Cartwrights are wonderful. Adam, Adam, Adam!
I agree . He's my favorite .
Likewise. I'd say each brother represents an aspect of Ben with Adam being the most like him. They're all capable of kindness but Joe's flaw is his recklessness and anger , Hoss's is that his heart sometimes misleads him.
Living California we were able to visit the Ponderosa Ranch often as a child.
It was quite fascinating to come home and be able to watch Bonanza on TV knowing that we walk the same grounds🤠 Hee-Haw ha
🤣
Oh I envy you, I would so love to see the ranch with my own eyes. Did it look the same as on tv? For example they always filmed the house from the exact same angle outside. It would be so interesting to see what it looked like from other angles.
@@katrinkasanfranciscobayare7364 not a bad idea .

The comedic episodes are the best. No gunfights just LOL. 😂👏💖
This is so good and love their compassion for those kind people
Thank you Grjngo for providing these! This is my favorite episode by far! A real bargain, too; 4 mini-episodes rolled into one, with each Cartwright in his own Bonanza story. And no one gets killed; PLUS slick stud mud-wrestling scene, and shirtless Adam at the anvil. mmm-MMM!!
Our pleasure!
Ah yes, the shirtless Adam ....made me go weak at the knees.
Bonanza, good quality show, with good moral values.

That’s unusually great !
One of the best opening scenes. Funny episode. Other favorite funny episodes include: Three Brides for Hoss, The Leprechauns, and The Wooing of Abigail Jones.😂
watched most all of these with my gram she was born in 1896 and grew up when everybody still had a horses she could name out any pony as well as any hotrodder could name cars
Wow. Things have changed more in the last 100 or so years than they have for any 1000 years before.
The most beautiful episode.
Where are those heart's these days.
Here's one: ❤️ 😂
There are others but they need Jesus. Only way that things work right
I love this episode, ALL of it, but the part where Adam does what he does is given an "A+." The whole story with Adam and the excellent actor Denver Pyle...and the way Adam figured out to help them and relieve their stress & pain, yet they would still (when able to) pay back what they had to, which was good for them.
I love watching Bonanza since I was a child. My favorite is Hoss☺️☺️☺️
Wow it's really refreshing for once to not read someone saying their favorite is Adam.
Springtime is a wonderful time! To love GOD and all the things that he created for us humans!! The very essence of life comes from the coming of spring the beginning of life anew!!! This episode was a great episode too !
Aww. The black puppy followed Hoss out of the barn

@@rosered103 Actually, my dear lady, I enjoy Adam's skills in ALL the aspects of his character.
A very fine episode, riding on the Love Thy Neighbor biblical dictum. Great to see all four Cartwright men involved in defeating evil in the figure of John Carradine - who gets others to do what he wants while he rests in blooming springtime. Food for thought indeed, perhaps we all do too much for people who live by skinning us all alive. Thanks for sharing, Grjngo!
John carradine is always a treat to watch and even adds a touch of class to all the horrible B-movie he was in.
What a trio of mudly cuties. Blessings
That was a great episode.
I split my firewood for over 30 years! Ben had those knots wrong I knew he was going to do it!!
Summertime has become one of my favorite Bonanza episodes!
Wrong season.

I love Bananza,I watch it every day. Still.
The only gave away was that the fish ain't live. Those who watch Bonanza are gifted. Gives you a lot of inspiration to live and do good
That opening scene was hilarious.
I remember Adam had his own show it was named Trapper John MD.
By God, when America used to provide aid, now we have lost the time when I needed Adam and Haas in our time😊
I honestly wish my dad had a stern voice with gentle caring to it, but instead, I got abused physically and mentally most of my life by him which is why this is my favorite show of all time. I've learned more from this show than I have in real life. I'm literally not kidding. I know this is just a fantasy tv show, but some shows can teach real-life values, although I've been drained mentally and don't even feel like a man which makes me tend to have to over act like a man since I've never felt like one it's hardend me in many ways mostly bad. If only life was what they portray on the big screens.
ya godda love a good down to earth show like Bonanza!
Hahahaha love these Cartwright brothers

The wonderful and fun thing about Bonanza was that they left in a lot of the bloopers. They cut out a scene here where the brothers are fighting and Pernell is yelling "my wig my wig"!
Dan tries to grab it at the beginning and Pernell has to make a quick grab to keep it on! 😂

Sweet Hoss
I have a Hoss ! LOL
As I watched the Settlers speak of the beauty of the land, I could not help but think of how Native Americans also felt this way (or more so) about this same land that they were forced from.
But they are better off today for it having happened
We were watching this and Dad looked Tim, Jack and me and just shook his head and laughed.
What a great episode from Bonaza, always helping each other out. It's a good thing that Sadie Marquardt, Alia Mohammed, Isabella Sampourni or Cassandra Fox didn't pass through Virginia City, Nevada or on The Pondersa Ranch.
A great episodes, they are so nice with people.
First three minutes, brothers don’t grow up, great way to start a video. One of the best!
Its so classic that hoss making chores for the people he is taking of their house
Poor Adam! That must've been the most uncomfortable dinner he's ever had!
He undoubtedly knew that the man was giving up his dinner for him.
I think what made Adam uncomfortable was the fact that he had been tasked with kicking them out of their home. It was just bad luck which landed them in that position nothing more and Adam believes in fairness like the other two brothers and his father .
When that man told Adam we ain’t gonna cry about it, I was crying listening to him explain the troubles they had.

The first time I saw Bonanza, I was 4 years old and had just moved to Germany with my Dad, who got stationed there in 1966! We lived off base until I started school, and my Dad had rented the upstairs from a German family, who watched me when my Dad was at work, so I got to see my first episode of Bonanza in German language! The only other thing I can remember watching stateside before we went to Germany, was Daniel Boone, I was 2 or 3 and lived in California at that time!
