Good episode. As for popularity (at least in recent years, Michael "The Buchanan" was named in about 2019, despite a VERY COVID-delayed inauguration. He and several members of his family came to the US for 2019 New Hampshire Scottish Festival and Games. About 300 of us arrived, primarily dressed in the modern tartan. Thinking to hear her thoughts on the matter, I relayed to Lady Buchanan (Paula) a brief conversation I had on an event bus with a lady of the McCloud clan. After saying hello, she first verified that was a Buchanan, then immediately expressed delight that there were so many of us attending, because her MacCloud tartan would not be considered the most garish at the festival. Lady Buchanan laughed and confided that she rather liked garish.
Being a son of a Buchanan and living not far from the Argyll colony and my family first settled there (NC), I like the modern tartan just fine but the weathered or ancient are better in my opinion. Im not in the clan and don’t have a kilt but will be getting one soon so think of my opinion however you want haha
I did just order a muted Buchanan kilt. I like the way it looks. Not the hugest fan of modern Buchanan, a touch too loud for my tastes, but I am slowly warming to it.
On the subject of "there are a lot of Buchanans out there", the Clan does have a lot of sub-septs that are recognized by the Clan Buchanan Society International, but NOT by the original Clan Buchanan Society (Scotland). Because the Scottish Society was developed as a charitable organization to aid in the education of male descendants of the original line and therefore only recognizes about four surnames ( Buchanan, McAuslan, McWattie and Risk).
Buchanan shows up on film and television occasionally as well. In addition to the example mentioned in the video, it is often seen draped on the couch at Hyacinth Bucket's sister Daisy's house in "Keeping up Appearances", and Audrey Tautou's character Sophie is wrapped in a Buchanan car blanket, even though her character is supposed to be a Sinclair (St. Claire) by ancestry. I once did some television set decoration work in the 1990s. One thing we learned was that bold colors, especially oranges and blues, show up really well on film under set lighting.
My mother-in-law has several Buchanans in her part of the family tree, so it is one of the tartans that my wife appreciates/ wears/ decorates with. (With Campbells and Douglas in my mom’s part of the tree, we have a lot of Black Watch too.) (And, I do like the Leslie tartans too.)
I really like the tartan, including the ”Modern”. Being asymmetric also makes it exiting. Then again, i guess i like some boldness since i also like MacLeod of Lewis and Barclay dress. I remember when first getting interested in tartan ( late 80’s, long before owning a kilt…. But with a MacLaughlin girlfriend. 🤣) i often pictured myself in a yellow based kilt for some reason. My first kilt was a Gordon tartan though… so more ”Blackwatchy”. I now often wear a PV with the fashion tartan ”Heritage Of Scotland”. Very blue/purple and bold in a darker way.
Clan Buchanan in the house!! I love it and collect items in Buchanan tartan, but I'm choosy about which variety I wear when and with what. I'm not sure if that made sense. I have lots of items in many of the variants and they all have times and occasions to be worn!!
I have long loved the Buchannan tartan mostly because it's an asymmetrical sett, which is not terribly common. It's funny that Ian mentioned other tartans looking alike. I'm often confused between Buchannan and MacMillan as it bears most of the same colours in a similar asymmetrical sett.
As a Buchanan in America, I love Buchanan Blue and Dress White. I wear the family pattern both as ties and as a main shirt pattern, and I'm going full Outlander here in the States this Halloween in Buchanan Hunting.
I'm a Buchanan . Andrew Ross Buchanan. And my direct bloodline never left Glasgow basically. My grandfather came over in the 1970's with my father and his siblings lol
There is also a MacMillan tartan that is similar enough to Buchanan that there may be some visual confusion between the two. And, like Buchanan, MacMillan has a substantial number of septs.
Also the MacMillan tartan which is named for a completely different highland clan but is essentially the Buchanan tartan without the little white stripe
As a Sept of Buchanan, Farquharson, and Stewart of Appen, I am in danger of being a serial kilter. But I am not a fan of the bright yellow and red. Like you said "people love it or hate it". I prefer the hunting pallet.
I have a question about wearing different tartan kilts. I've always wanted to own a Buchanan tartan kilt since I have family from the clan. But there are other clan tartans that I find good-looking. Are kilt wearers only allowed to wear the tartans associated with their clans or are they able to wear any clan tartan kilts with no problem?
Sept branch names. I wonder at names extended from the Tuatha de Dannan (northern tribes of Dan). Is Buch a derivative of Irish gaelic for boy (male branch of family, tribe)?
Hello. I am a Buchanan. I love the Buchanan Tartan because it doesn't follow the more older clan colours which were quite drab. In saying that, I hate with a passion the modern Buchanan Tartan. I think it's too rich in colour and it looks like a lolly wrapper. I would never and could never wear it.
Aaaahhhh I can't stand asymmetrical tartans. They drive me up the wall. Setting aside the colors involved, right out the gate it's on my list of "Nah..."

That Buchanan Blue is one of my favorites.
Never really thought about how many Buchanan tartans there were. Some are truly beautiful. Might have to put it on the short list.

I am presently having a Buchanan old sett weathered kilt made. It's a great looking tartan.
I have the Weathered Buchanan, and an Autumn Tweed, great tartans 😀

That's a gorgeous tartan (including "modern"). Really learned a lot with this video.

Buchanan modern great for warmer weather and especially for women. For formal events I would stay with darker colors.
1) You passed on the blue and white Dress version?
2) Take a picture of your lap, in Buchanan tartan. For the ULTIMATE WINDOWS LAPTOP SCREEN SAVER.
I live near Racine, Wisconsin. They have a kilted drum and bugle corps called the 'Racine Kilties'. They wear Buchanan modern.
I will agree that Buchanan Modern is quite a loud tartan, but it’s special in its own way. (I wear a Buchanan Modern Hunting kilt for bagpiping gigs)
We like to call the modern tartan "Dandy Buchanan". Wherever he goes, Dandy Buchanan is hard to miss.
I love the Buchanan tartan. We stand out in a crowd. Go ketchup. Mustard and relish 😁
There is also a ton of septs under the Buchanans.
Yes. Gibson is one of them. Gibson as in Mel Gibson! There's a video on UA-cam of him wearing a Buchanan Hunting tartan on the Jay Leno show.
We have sooooo many
And Watson...
@@la_old_salt2241 Watson is under Buchanan

It looks like MacLeod to me
@@James-dq3jo
How? And which MacLeod?

Hi I was in the black watch royal Canadian highlanders, I have seen that tartan everywhere...what do you like or not about it?
Thanks

Hey my question got noticed. Buchanan ancient is probably my next purchase.
Big fan of Clan Buchanan tartan
I like the one ya’ll have on.

Come on in Frank, the waters fine. 😄
My casual kilts are the Modern Buchanan, but I'm hoping to have a Feileadh Mor in the Ancient.

You can wear any tartan you like, just learn something about the clan out of respect to them should you be asked about your kilt.
What about the thomson tartans
Can you do all the MacDowall tartans?
More importantly, do any of the actual MacDowell tartans match the one they used for the fast food place in Coming to America?
Sept branch names.
I wonder at names extended from the Tuatha de Dannan (northern tribes of Dan).

Being of Buchanan ancestry I love it.
Buchanan Modern always made me think of a suit a used car salesman or Bob from That 70s Show would wear.

Buchanan Inauguration was rolled out in honor of the 15th president of the Untied States.
noble clan buchannan is grand and honerable
RANKIN TARTAN..we are Clan.of MaClean
Most tartans have variation..
I prefer the ancient
Not the worst tartan.
Its not a Buchanan Tartan
Just very similar.
