on practice test 2 #7 , why couldn't you square root both sides ? and answer be a-b=+-4

Good question - you cannot apply a square root to terms that are being added or subtracted in that manner - only multiplied or divided
We have a whole sub-topic in our SAT math book with drills as to when you can and cannot apply roots!
