    So she's paying $950 a month. In 12 years she'll pay $136,800. That's with no interest.
    At 3% , she's paying $11,500 in interest.

I don’t know the area, but $137k is pretty affordable for a house. Maybe you don’t mean in Austin proper? According to Zillow the average house price in Austin is almost $400k and rent is $1750 per month. See below. Perhaps you could find a fixer or a house in a bad neighborhood for what you’re quoting nowadays, but that’s about it. She is paying 1/3rd of that, for 1/3rd of the house. But that’s what she can afford, and it’s smart because she’s young and not going to be house poor.

@@TinyHouseGiantJourney I'm saying that the $60,000 is not the true cost of the house.
Whenever I see someone talk about how much they bought a car or house for. They never talk about the true cost of it, after interest.
I looked at houses for sale and for rent. You can get a house for around $140,000. And rent for $600-$800.
And based on Google street view, it doesn't look like a bad neighborhood. But you can't really tell by that.

Prices haven't really changed, just the reality that the prices aren't going to be the same for everyone because everyone is not doing it exactly the same...
Some DIY, many go to a commercial builder, some can manage with a basic home but others need something more elaborate to meet their needs, some will live in them alone as a couple but others will include up to large families...
There's just not going to be one price range for them all nor will the homes they get be all equal or equivalent...
Really, it's like saying just because there are high priced cars, phones, computers, etc that you can't just go get a budget priced one... Just know what you're actually paying for because the choices aren't limited to just the size of the home...

When I was working in the Real Estate industry I was amazed at the mindset of the buyers who I would interact with. They would only just be starting out in their careers or Industry and yet insisted on buying a 4x2 house. They didn't even have children but wanted the biggest and the best. They invariably ended up having to sell out and downgrade. My first was a 1 bedroom unit with a courtyard. Couldn't seem to get through to them that they needed to start small... Sad.

Something to understand is the majority of cost savings from tiny living comes from all the long term cost savings that lifestyle promotes, which can add up to multiple times what the home cost to purchase over the years.
Problem is people tend to get too focused on just the purchase cost of the home but really it's the long term costs that are the game changers.
Mind, the average home owner is spending thousands on their home every year and here's an example of just some of those costs...
      www.zillow.com/blog/hidden-costs-178265/
Over time, the actual costs of home ownership of traditional homes add up to multiple times what the home cost to purchase but tiny living can reduce nearly all of those long term costs so the difference is actually much larger than just the purchase cost of the home in what people can potentially save.
This is why, despite the cost of some of these homes, that people are still managing to go debt free in just a matter of a few years, and then all those savings can be directed to living their lives to the fullest.
Even for those who rent, they're paying less for utilities and multiple other long term costs.
Costs also vary, not all home will cost the same and not all locations will deal with the same issues or have the same cost of land, etc. But there's more than just the home to consider when figuring out how the changes will actually effect you...

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 4 роки тому +8

@Kimberly Devoz - Over priced depends what you get for it... Problem is you don't get the same things with every home.
Locations gives different pros and cons like proximity to things like shopping areas, hospitals, jobs, schools, views, climate, weather, etc.
Location also effects how much competition you'll deal with for resources, whether everything in the area is higher or lower costs, what the cost of the land will be, how much you'll pay in taxes, how much it will cost to hire a commercial builder, how much just material will cost, etc.
In a high priced area, even an empty lot can cost a lot vs other area...
While the home itself can be done at a very wide range from basic structure that will get you by but will need regular maintenance to keep going or it'll eventually fall apart vs a home built to handle just about anything, can last over 500 years, will require little maintenance, etc... Among many other reasons costs will vary...
So it's not as simple as just looking at something because there's a lot that goes into costs and you have to know them to actually know whether something is worth it or not...

Your plant in your sleeping space is actually called a POTHOS. Beautiful, cleans the air, and I love the variegated leaves. It roots easily in water so you can always start another plant or plants.
I love your tiny house, especially the stairs. Great for safety and for when you’re feeling unwell and not into climbing up and down a ladder.

Sharon G thank you! I was wondering and do you have tips on keeping it alive? Or really making it thrive?

      Torey Trouart
Lots of light will bring out more of the variegation on the leaves. Keep it moist but not soaking wet. (It can dry out a little between watering.) Mist every so often. Feed a balanced fertilizer at half strength. These are actually really forgiving plants. One of my very favourites! Enjoy!

Pothos are also known as 'devils ivy'.

It is a beautiful plant. I have a few different varieties that are thriving in my home. They will vine beautifully. 😊
