Cool results. 👍🏻👍🏻 If you want an easy way to get your smoke you can pick up a cheap oil lamp. Just take off the chimney and extend the wick a little farther out than normal until you get the desired amount of smoke.

Fun with science. I love this effect. Plan to try this very soon. Meantime, how is the smoke being made? The hottest part of a candle flame is the outermost part of the flame where the most oxygen is available to feed combustion. Gasses (i.e., the black smoke as well as invisible combustible gasses) move up thru the flame from the paraffin and are most completely burnt at the outer edge of the flame. The knife tip is simply interfering with the flow of the gas to the corona of the flame and preventing the gas from being burnt efficiently. Result; more soot or black smoke. It will be interesting to try different shapes of metal probes to interfere with the flame and find out what effects they will have. Perhaps a scratch awl placed directly thru the center of the flame would produce more soot or be more controllable. There is also the potential to get this effect with an oil burning lamp. Allowing a wick to extend too far generates a lot of black soot. This is exactly the sort of experimenting that makes these crafts so entertaining. Thanks for demonstrating this great effect.

Maybe you’re torching the epoxing, burning your epoxy. Or, if you’re using alcohol inks, it’s normal to have some bare spots on your tumbler from epoxy. Give it a light sanding, and epoxy over it, the epoxy shouldn’t repeal

      There are different speed motors.
      3/4rpm or 5/6rpm
I prefer the faster one. 5/6

You should always sand been doing this 10years i know you say you dont so basically you can peel that epoxy right off.

I don’t sand my non powdered stainless tumblers. I have sanded some when I first started, just to see if there was a difference, for me, there wasn’t. Never has.
My epoxy has never peeled off any of them, as long as they have been cared for properly. Using the 91% alcohol and the flat spray paint helps the epoxy stick to the tumbler perfectly.
I don’t see a reason to waste time and money on materials that really isn’t needed, just suggested.
We have different methods and processes when creating, what works for you, may not work for me. And that is okay. You do what makes you feel best and I’ll do the same.
      Thank you for your views.

I've been making tumblers for several years too. Never sanded or wiped with alcohol. Just spray paint for the base and I've never had any issues. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t hold your tumbler so close to the flame
