    In addition;
    Get a "Beware of the Dog" sign, place some used chewing toys on your porch and a leash with a BIG collar in the yard.

    My son installed 2 outside cameras and 2 inside cameras and I can watch my house from my laptop no matter where I go. When I went on vacation for a week to SC, I could look at my home anytime I wanted. My son also had it set up to view on his computer at work whenever he wanted. It gave me a feeling of security.

    "The gentleman who broke into the door last night..."
    Gentlemen don't break into homes.
    That Haunted Mansion placard by the front door looks very heavy. You could clobber someone with it. Keep it there.

    You should get those wooden rods and you can place them in the window tracks. The thick kind will not allow a intruder to open the window. 💜

    This is so odd. Just yesterday while watching your vlog, I thought to myself I hope you have a housesitter since you're basically advertising to a large audience that your house will be empty while you're on vacation.
    Myself, I tend to leave a light on the bottom floor and second story of my house. I also have a sign out front advertising my security system. I've lived in my home so far for many years without a break-in (knock on wood).

      +Dean Strickson Right On! Don't advertise an empty house. At least let it be known that someone will be at the house while your gone. The lights and a tv or radio is good too. The power bill is nothing compared to what the losses can be.

  • @Kanzuko
    @Kanzuko 8 років тому +1

    Scary that this happened to you. The way we usually protect our home is through a security alarm system. If anybody enters the doors, we know. The only windows close to the ground are in my room really, but when we go away on a long break, I'll always prop my big dresser up in front of the windows so that it is a nightmare to even try entering through the window. I've never experienced a break in, but I can only imagine how terrifying it is and I would never wish it to happen to anybody. If all else fails, we have a dog who is extremely overprotective of us. If anybody outside of our home even gets close to the door, he barks ferociously at them until they go away.

    I'm sorry to hear someone tried to break into your house. It's good they didn't succeed and that you're okay. On the bright side, at least the damage was just to the handle of a screen door that can easily be replaced instead of a busted window or door. It's funny that one of your thoughts during the incident was to Periscope it happening lol, but then at least you would have them on video. He's lucky you didn't go full hulk on him. Even though you have a kindhearted soul, you still look like you could do some serious damage to someone. Definitely consider getting a security system and cameras so you can catch the intruder if it happens again. I've had my house broken into a couple years ago and had the majority of my valuables stolen, which caused me to become extremely paranoid and developed trust issues with others. It feels terrible knowing someone was in your house and stole items you worked for to purchase, but you eventually come to mind that they're just objects like you said. My house is now protected by multiple locks and a NetworX security system. I even lock my bedroom door every time I leave the house or go to sleep. We're planning on installing cameras as well so it'll catch whoever tries to break-in next time. Stay safe and positive, Adam!

    • @andrewbrendan1579
      @andrewbrendan1579 8 років тому +2

      +Frankie Washburn I'm glad you mentioned locking the bedroom door. It's another layer of security and can give the resident more time to do whatever should be done whether it's moving furniture against the door or calling the police or climbing out the window or some combination of all three. I own almost nothing of value. If someone breaks into my tiny efficiency apartment they're going to be very disappointed unless they're looking for my moderately-priced netbook that's five years old and lot second-hand books!

    people who break into homes and steal things are the worst. my home has been broken into twice last year all within a few days of each other, both times money was stolen from us but you're right its not so much the things they take what has the affect it has is the having your home, your "safe" place broken into by a stranger that gets to you. for many nights after I didn't sleep and even still I will do a sweep of the house to make sure everything is secure and locked away safely. as for protecting the house we're just looking to move away to a better area as there's nothing but issues here. I'm glad you're safe Adam.

  • @jeff9723
    @jeff9723 8 років тому +5

    I know everyone says having a gun is the best defense but the reality is most normal individuals will not react like action movie stars when presented with a situation like that. it's very easy for people to say, just shoot them. law enforcement spends countless hours training for situations like this. I'm always amazed that the average joe thinks they can just kill a person without a second thought even if they are breaking into your home. one really needs to know what the laws are for using deadly force. the best defense is always a good offense. most criminals are looking for an easy target. making your home look like it's well protected is key. cameras, even fake decoys, alarm systems or even just a sign, and evidence that a dog is on the property are all good ideas. if you're going to be gone for extended periods of time it's a good idea to put things like lights, tvs, or stereo systems on timers to make it appear as if someone is home.

      @andrewbrendan1579 8 років тому +2

      +Jeffrey Murrell You are so right, Jeffrey. I know from experience that when a real-life situation occurs and there's real danger someone doesn't just get the gun and start shooting. I once had to hold someone at gunpoint to protect a family member and it was a horrible experience. Terrible as it sounds and without going into detail I wish I had been able to go ahead and shoot. Just squeezing that trigger is extraordinarily difficult; truly easier said than done.

    • @fanofrunbot9771
      @fanofrunbot9771 8 років тому

      +Jeffrey Murrell Just SHOWING a gun can make the difference. I stopped a knife attack on a couple 20 years ago just by pulling my revolver out (attacker took off). Good sequence is call out you have a gun, show the gun, fire a warning shot, aim below the waist, if necessary - centermass shot.

    • @StinkyGringo
      @StinkyGringo 4 місяці тому

      Lol no actually cops go to civilian training schools if they want real training. The standards at the police academy are so low, most cops have trouble hitting their targets 10% of the time according to studies. This is all fact. Cops have very very low level training in reality. You don't understand. Their firearm training is complete garbage across the country. This is actually a major issue no one talks about.

    Adam, I am so sorry this has happened to you along with the other things you've been dealing with and I'm so thankful you weren't hurt or worse. I hope you're not having added difficulty with should-I-have-done-this or should-I-have-done-that. Though the almost intruder didn't get in this has still been a horrible experience and it's going to take a while to process this until it's part of the past. I think the added security is an excellent, sensible idea. When things have settled down more you'll be able to develop a still more detailed plan that is right for you should you need it.

    I'm torn on this one. My first reaction is thank God you were home so he couldn't take your stuff...then I think: you could be dead right now. Sadly,in many of these cases it's someone you know who rips you off. I had that happen to me once,I came home and the back door was open and the TV's and VCRs were gone. I found out it was some punk who had partied at my house a couple times,a friend of a friend. I drove over to his house,banged on the door,his roommate opened the door and without saying a word I marched into his bedroom and there was my stuff. Sadly he wasn't home but I got my crap. I always dreamed of seeing his face when he came home and found out I not only knew he did it but got my stuff back
    Jeez this has been The Year Of Suck for you big guy! I hope things return to normal soon

    I'm glad you weren't harmed Adam. It's understandable to be concerned about them breaking in again.
    We go out and leave a radio going, like a talk show type channel...then it sounds like humans are in the
    house conversing. Also we leave a light on. You could have been away and then just returning with him
    in the house. You are so lucky. Also, at every window we keep a metal thingy...I don't know it's name, but
    it screws on to the frame of the window and keeps the window from being opened. (I guess though if they
    break it open that would not be a deterrant for the intruder). I like your camera idea....also those lights outfront
    that are triggered by motion. If that is a rental place, could you talk to the manager and see if they could secure
    the place better...perhaps it won't be up to you to place all these security measures and you won't be out more $'s.
    Well, it must seem like a really terrible 2016. It could be that your just getting all your crappy stuff out of the way
    for the year, and soon you'll be having a good rest of the year. My 2015 felt really bad, from the very 1rst day onward.
    So, I understand feeling like a "black cloud" is hanging over you. I sure hope things look up from here on out.
    Take Care. Let us all know what you ended up doing to secure your place. : )

    Inside dogs, are better than any alarm system. Dogs go barking when the wind blows, either intruder takes off, or prepare to meet their maker. ;)

    Sorry to hear that Adam. Use the deadbolt and sticks in the tracks of the windows and sliding glass door. Also, find a way to get your hands on one of the signs that alarm companies put out in front yards. Those work really well as a deterrence. Also motion sensor lights. I would say get a gun but in CA thieves tend to have more rights than homeowners.

    A Louisville Slugger or better yet an axe pick handle by your bed is good. Not dangerous in and of themselves either of these will deter or stop someone who is entering your home, though.
    The camera mounted outside is a great idea.
    Hope February is a better month for you, Adam. I'm sure it will be.

    Hey Adam,you should beef up that plate on the door frame.If the srewes are stripped out just get longer screws so you can get a hold of something solid. 4 inch or even 6 inch screws.... That door didn't seem "shoulder proof"..Also I have always had a dog and Belle is not only a good friend, i know she would go to bat for me any time.......Its nice to know...happy trails ..

    A friend of mine had a severe drinking problem, he lives in a fairly affluent neighborhood in fact a NY Jets football player lives in his neighborhood, early one morning he 2as steaming drunk, let his dog out walked out of his house went next door and was banging on the door at 2am, the police show up and he said that he couldn't get into his house, the neighbor told the cops that he lived next door, the police walked him home by then his dog was there waiting, they got him into the house and left, so when you yelled that you were going to call the police and he asked why he may have been high or something and thought it was his house.

    Sorry this happened to you ADAM. I wonder if the homeowners would be willing to split the cost with you? Would seem that they wouldn't want someone to break in either. Glad I bought a shirt yesterday to support the cause. Here's to a fantastic February!!

    I'm thankful you weren't hurt, as well.
    Been through it, when I lived in Marin County, CA.
    Someone slit our screens and got in the house ... cops thought they were kids looking through medicine cabinets.
    The worse thing was, we believe that my mom driving in the driveway was what scared them away. I was at work ... I thank GOD they didn't hurt our dog who was outside in her yard OR my mom.
    Ya never quite get over that feeling of violation.
    These days I have a husband that one would not want to mess with.
    But we live in a small Maine town and things are really pretty safe here.

    You said it right, It's just stuff" and most of us have more stuff than we need. You can't stop somebody from messing with your stuff if thats what they have decided they are going to do with out getting yourself in trouble. Hide the stuff that's important to you and do not worry about the rest of it.

    Early August 2011, three teens set fire to my then vehicle as it sat parked in the driveway next to my homestead at 5am.I awoke to that scene happening, it was terrifying!! It was such an invasion to my whole life, it took a few months to get over that. Thank goodness you were not hurt and neither were we that morning. My vehicle was a complete loss tho. The culprits in my case were caught a couple weeks later, they burned 4of my neighbors cars before being caught. I now have a awesome dog who sounds like a 120 pound rottweiler on the other side of the door when she's actually a 50pound lab mix. If you can fit a dog into your life they make great protection and companion as well. Be safe

    Car alarm! Always hit that car alarm button! Most of them wont stick around with an alarm going off, and as long as you've got the keys on you, keep it blasting till you feel safe. Usually anyone in the area's gonna notice a car alarm that doesn't stop, too and the thieves don't want that much attention.
    I hope such never happens again :( Be safe!
