- A stirring account of the most influential battle in history: For millennia, Carthage's triumph over Rome at Cannae in 216 BCE has inspired reverent awe. It was the battle that countless armies tried to imitate, most notably in World Wars I & II, the battle that obsessed military minds. Yet no general ever matched Hannibal's unexpected, innovative & brutal military victory--the costliest day of combat for any army in history. Robert L. O'Connell, an admired military historian, now tells the whole story of Cannae, giving a stirring account of this apocalyptic battle of the 2nd Punic War, its causes & consequences.
Modern scholarship can’t compete with the ancient primary sources, but for those who prefer the mincing way modern historians tackle such histories, this is a great alternative.
The beginning is disconcerting because a great number of famous Roman leaders are enumerated and the ordinary audience gets confused. (But the real historical record starts later, at 10.20, as a helpful listener commented. Thank you.)
Great historical information that brings us closer to the past in various fields and permits us to compare though on a limited scale that time with ours, one of the charms about great history books.👍
I have to read this for class so the audio book is really helpful, now I can multitask!
Full books is 13 hours but this is a nice taste.
No audio !
Starts at 10:20
