I would love to have my old radio recordings. A local college station had a metal show on Saturday nights. I won tickets from them to see Overkill, Motorhead and Slayer. Killer show.

I'm going to see Motley Crue's final tour in Toronto Aug 22. This is would be my second time seeing them, and I'm going with my teenage best friend (we're both now in our 40's) There is nobody better to go with then a bestie who loved the Crue as much as we did, even though we couldn't go to every tour, we had all their albums and dressed up as two of them for halloween, how's that for devoution, two girls dressed up in Shout at the Devil gear!! Wish we had pics!! Just wanted to tell you a little metal memory of my own! ROCK ON PAUL!

A few years ago my band and I performed the whole TOO FAST FOR LOVE album live, dressed as Motley Crue. • @andrewvincent5472

Not really. I was introduced to that radio station by a metal head at the local rollar skating rink tho. That introduction to real metal has always been a land mark for the door to metal being opened to me.
..At that young point in my taste in metal music was Metallica (song- One), Sabbath/Solo Ozzy, the Cure, GNR,...
Then tape trading happened, and in the very early 90's I was being exposed to headbanger's ball on mtv, local college radio, and becoming fixated on any new band that sounded good, was catchy, and something new that I hadn't heard before.

I remember being obsessed with Guns n' Roses well known tune Sweet Child of Mine. I would sit by the stereo with my fingers on the record/play button to capture it just right (including other songs). My grandparents were watching me one day and I was playing outside by the electrical box ( which Grandma hated) and this dude zoomed down the street in a Camero with my song blaring! I sprinted inside to try and capture the song on tape, even if it was disjointed (prepared at all times). I had no idea if he was playing a CD or the known rock station. Unfortunately, I didn't capture, but did eventually ( I do realise Gun N' Roses isn't necessarily heavy metal, but this video sparked the memory)! Either way, I miss the 80's (born in '81). Love your videos. Your work means a lot! Keep it up

We had a metal station in Milwaukee back in the mid-eighties to early 90's that I listened to almost every day. One day on a weekend I woke up to put the station on, and there was a Jazz station playing elevator music. I called the station (I often made requests) and a guy answered. I asked what happened to the music? He said there was a new owner and format, and he asked if I liked it. I sadly told him I want my metal :(

Chris DeCarlo used to work at WDVE. She left the station around the time WDVE stopped playing hard rock and heavy metal. It was a great in your face move but unfortunately it did not last. DVE used to pride itself in the Rolling Stone readers poll as the #2 rock station in the country. Some lame program director removed hard rock and metal to lure more advertisers which in turn hurt the station. I remember seeing Chris at the metal concerts at the Pitt arena during the DVE era. WOW, thanks for the memories. GOOD JOB. I remember the Popeye promo for the station.

@@Launchpad05 True. WDVE was so good in the early 80s. In early/mid 1984 they changed and even fired Jimmy and Steve the next year which they kept under wraps. They claimed they got a job offer at another station. I saw an interview with Steve on youtube and he said they were fired because the station wanted to lure yuppies. I loved Linda, Hershel, Ron Nennie, and Chris DeCarlo in the prime WDVE days. I cant believe Michelle Michaels is still there. I remember her first night on the radio when she was introduced.

I've never heard of this K-Rock station before. I do remember B-94 adopting the K-Rock name after it died before temporarily coming back. After doing some research, I learned that the K-Rock station you're talking about was actually A station I discovered in the mid 90's called Classic Hits Z-107 FM. One of the DJs who worked there was Jim DeCeaser. Former DJ for WYDD, and the host of the long running show, 'Jazz Impressions'. This station also switched places with WAMO, and WXDX. The station is now WHJB. A classic hits radio station.

Hey Paul! Did they have Metal Shop on the radio when you were a kid?
It was a radio show on Friday or Saturday nights.
The show intro said: "are mom and dad tucked away for the night? Cuz it's time for metal shop the only show with teeth!"
And then the sound of an electric saw.
They used to have cheesy radio bumpers of famous musicians effort he commercials like "this bill Ward formerly of Black sabbath, we'll be back with more metal shop right after this."

Than i bought cds and shared with friends. never really listen to radio.
Now we have Spotify and all those streaming radio stations that cater to type of music. UA-cam i use a lot for new music.
I remember when i was getting into Heavy Metal? when i was around 20. Dimebag Darrell was on the Heavy Shift and he put hes favourites on. 1st song was Painkiller by Judas Priest! Blew my mind. Once i showed my friends,we all went and bought entire Priest collection. we where hooked! Priest is my 2nd favourite band of all time!

Friday night there was a show called Rock Sin Fronteras (Rock Without Borders). But my favorite show was Thursday night's Alto Voltaje (High Voltage). Alto Voltaje was the truer metal show and played a lot of brutal underground death metal and black metal music that the more mainstream Rock Sin Fronteras didn't touch. Alto Voltaje was awesome!

My husband is a native New Yorker, and he used to listen to metal on WCWP, which is Long Island University's radio station. He told me how he used to call them up all the time to ask for information about songs he heard that weren't identified by the DJ. Then, he would take the train into the city to go buy the album.
I grew up in a small community in Wisconsin. The only metal to be heard on the radio was at an ungodly hour on the college radio station. When I listened to that show, the content leaned more toward the extreme forms of metal, so I got my first exposures to bands like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide. In retrospect, I am amazed that we got any metal at all, because the most popular genre in this area is Country.

I think our heads would have exploded Scanners style if we had gotten an all heavy metal radio station in the mid-80's in Nashville, TN. 105.9 was virtually one in the late 70's, but changed format right when I really got into radio. 103.3 KDF was almost metal, but were perhaps even better in that you could hear Ozzy one minute and then Men At Work right after. Their AM sister station WKDA went all new wave briefly so there was some cross pollination happening. Sunday nights on KDF brought us m-m-m-m \m/etal shop which was always great. I've still got some of the bumper bits on cassette tape. I lived way out of town so I could only pick up the bigger radio stations, but a friend lived closer in and he could pick up a junior college's radio station which had a metal show. This friend would tape the show and let me borrow it. It's where I first heard Dokken's "Paris Is Burning" which really blew my mind at the time. KDF later changed to all country also. Love your videos Weird Paul.

Henry S I'm not sure what was up with the Bob Seger, Tom Petty, etc that they played. There must be some reason they played it, but I'm not sure it was a good one.

Hi Paul is your portable boom box am fm radio and black and white tv still around in our house? I saw a lot of them on google

    • @weirdpaulp
      @weirdpaulp  7 років тому

Around 1989 or maybe 1990, there was a power surge on our street. It ruined a lot of electronic stuff (VCRs, TVs) that were plugged in all over the houses nearby. Unfortunately, that boom box was one of the things that got fried. The electric company had to pay us (and everyone else) for all the stuff that got ruined.

That was a super-awesome story. I guess here in L.A. we were spoilt with radio stations.
But I wonder why no advertisers? I have heard western Pennsylvania is more conservative to this day, so maybe that was it.

In sacramento california we had a similar short lived radio station.
97 KROY for all of about the summer of 1984 it was a Heavy Metal station. They played Motley Crüe, KISS, def leppard, Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot, Ratt, etc.
I actually requested "round and round" by RATT on their request line when I was six years old.
Since it was the summer time my brother and I were allowed to stay up later and listen to the radio until 10pm. After that We would turn it way down and put a black t shirt over my brothers stereo cabinet so if my parents peeked into the room it would look like the stereo was off.
One night they played " I love rock and roll" by Joan Jett and then a clock striking midnight. Then the station went off the air.
