Do all of these people realize she is the original musical Tracy. So everything her voice is is done because that is the Tracy they wanted. This is the Tracy they wrote and she does it perfectly. The 2007 movie was based off of this and her performance.
I can't believe all the people who says her voice is bad. She said in an interview that she made up this nasally and squeaky voice FOR Tracy. This isn't her real singing voice.
cm1727 what people also need to remember is that she’s playing a 15 yr old Baltimore girl, my sisters voice when she does theatre plays is oddly squeaky but it fits so well with whatever character she plays.
Marissa has a really good voice! Sometimes I wish I can travel back in time to 2002 and see the original Broadway cast. I've liked Hairspray since I was almost 15! I'm really excited for NBC's upcoming holiday broadcast this December
@@Nyx_Room I’m not that much of a Tina Turner fan except for What’s Love Got To Do With IT and Great Spirits from Brother Bear. Never been to NYC before but one new musical I want to see is Mrs Doubtfire
If you listen to the whole song you do hear her natural voice come through in parts and i personally think she has a great voice , especially for Broadway.
tracy is suppsoed to be awkward physically and mentally. she is a social outcast. i admit the way nikki did the part was perfect for the movie. but this is perfect for stage. and the part. clearly u dont know the meaning to this character, and this show,.
She has the best protrayal of tracy turnblad in my opinion... others are good singers but they don't quite portray the true character of tracy. Her voice may be a little annoying sometimes, but it's supposed to be like that and adds to the character
The new generation of auto tune can't appreciate individuality and creativity. These are REAL people. They remind us of everyday people we know, not pop stars and the such. I'm not knocking the movie The girl did great but so did this one. I mean, listen to that last note. This girl can sing.
Her Tracy seems so exaggerated, but that's probably for comedic effect. I think she makes it work--you get the feeling that she's delusional about her star potential, & it makes you sympathize with her more. So there's a good reason for the nasally voice, pitchy singing, facial expressions, etc.
You're right. I just want to say something, it's not "Her Tracy" like you said, it's the actual Tracy. Marissa is the 1st Tracy ever in the musical version of Hairspray (2nd Tracy after the original Rikkie Lake from the movie). So that perfomance should be the base for the rest of the Tracies thay comes after.
Wow, I had no idea the musical was so different. Note in kinda flag I saw the movie first or I wouldn't hated the movie on sight for being so different.
They call Marissa the original Tracy meaning she was n the original Broadway Cast. Ricky Lake was simply apart of the movie which is in no way correlated with Broadway. They don't call the movie a "Broadway Movie", this was just someone filming the musical number from the movie.
When I saw the original John Waters film .. at the time I thought this would make a great musical.. the influence was hearing Motormouth Mabel's voice .. eventually it happened..Never forgot Divine as Edna Turnblad in the John Waters original. Saw a great production of the musical at the Curve theatre, Leicester at a Public Dress Rehearsal which brought the house down. This show creates goose bumps when one recognises the reality that it was a stand against racial segregation ..
For people talking shit, you have to give her props for being able to do a fake high pitched squeaky voice the ENTIRE SHOW while having freakin LUNG CANCER. Yeah 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
If they were to bring this show back to Broadway, they should use the cast from the 2007 movie. Except Marissa, Ricki and Nikki could perform a special number at the end of the show
+pbscraze I don't know if I would be up for that. Speaking of the 2007 movie, did you hear about NBC's Hairspray Live? Because that version's executive producers Neil Meron & Craig Zaden are producing the show December 7th.
I and many people are completely aware that her voice is designed for the character, and she's not a bad singer at all. But don't lie and say you think the "oh, oh, oh"s aren't fucking annoying.
I thought this would be amazing because she was the first, but this is possibly the worst Good Morning Baltimore I’ve heard. It doesn’t help that she’s a 30 year old playing a girl half her age. I think if she had not been the first, people would say that she is way too old for the part. Most actresses in this role are in their early 20s.
This is NOT the "original" Hairspray. Why is everyone saying this? Marissa Janet Winokur was not the "original" Tracy Turnblad. Ricki Lake was the "first" Tracy in the initial 1988 Hairspray film, produced and directed by John Waters. Marissa was a great Tracy, however, in the Broadway film, Ricki was a superb choice in the initial project, and Nikki Blonsky was a great choice for the 2007 film.
I dont really like her voice. Even if it is in characther I odn't really get why the charactehr is that way, Nicki Blonsky voice worked fine for the characther. Is she trying to make the characther obnoxious. That doesn't seem like Tracy to me.
Do all of these people realize she is the original musical Tracy. So everything her voice is is done because that is the Tracy they wanted. This is the Tracy they wrote and she does it perfectly. The 2007 movie was based off of this and her performance.
I mean, except the original tracy isn't her, but hey whatever floats your boat.
I can respect that and I know Ricki Lake was the original Tracy period
Ricki and Marissa are going to cameo in Hairspray LIVE on NBC
How about the Tracy from the original thing that actually won awards & came from something universally well received?
Miles Wilkie ricki lake? She didn't sing
PERFECT. VOICE, MOVES, TONE, TIMING. This is IT people. #goodmorningbaltimore

I love the OBC especially Marissa
I wish I would go back in time to 2002. At least I'm excited for Harvey Fierstein to play Edna in NBC's new version LIVE
Hey there, Marissa and Ricki Lake are going to cameo in the show as employees of Mr. Pinky's Hefty Hideaway
Hairspray Live is my favourite version. OBC is my second favourite
@@Louis_Adams Hairspray Live is my favorite version too
The part when Tracy hits the alarm and gave me chills. does every time :)
I love Marissa Jaret Winokur as Tracy Turnblad.
You know what the more I listen to her, she has an amazing voice!
Y'all know should know... She's holding back in most of the songs.

From hairspray to winning big brother. Marissa is amazing!!!!!
yes congrats! Remember with the Oh Oh Ohs of this song.... sing it just like Marissa Winokur becuz that's how they are suppose to sound.
Marissa Jaret Winokur is the best!! no one can beat her!! full stop! yass gurl yes! love you!
...I love this. so much.
The choice to do this voice shows that she *gets it. She knows what show she's in. It's a John Waters film on Broadway.
U guys I'm pretty sure this was the original cast so she's the Tracy everyone is living up to she wasn't living up to anyone else
Her "oh oh oh" is so sharp 💖💖

CG GG right??? Other Tracy's try to present her as actually having talent. And really, Tracy doesn't have talent.
Zach T wait she doesn't???? I thought she was supposed to be talented but just over weight????

You do realize she is the ORIGINAL Tracy? This isn't *her* Tracy. This *is* Tracy....
I love this so much! Also, that curtain is beautiful!
She sings and plays Tracy to perfection the way tracy should be played. so only stupid people say shes "BAD"
Checking her work after winning CBB.

some one make a partition to make a revival of hairspray if there is one I will sign
She was in the First Scary Movie..

Oh yeah she did win the TONY though

Tracy is supposed to have thus deep voice. Nice person to cast as Tracy turnblad
I'm not too fond of her voice tbh it kinda disappointed me

Ashley Carver she made up that voice you bum that's not how she resly sing

She's very good by I don't really like her oh's.
Wanted her voice to be better :/ her oh oh oh's aren't that good tbh
Amy Louise it was a creative choice. It fits the character

Her singing is so off :/.

I do think that she is doing the positivity well, and the determination, I just don't like her voice
Whoever plays Tracy is a horrible singer. Is she trying to do a Diamanda Galas impersonation?
Alex Wilson that's the original Tracy lmao
Ugh! Less nasally voice please!! D:
Marissa is cringe. She is one of my least favorite Tracys
