    Man, no one swings like bickert. Had the pleasure to see him live over a dozen times, had a big profound impact on my playing.
    Thanks for this great video

    Q- was he having fun? Did it look like he was having fun? He brings joy to the guitar.

    my favorite living guitarist, easily. and yeah, you're right. I've thought about this too. When you can't go outside for weeks at a time you 'hole up' with your axe, and when spring comes you emerge with all this new material and killer chops.......something like that.

    Another cut from this same session is currently on youtube. Search for "Do Nothtin' till You Hear from Me". Fans commenting on that page say the drummer is Buff Allen. Neil Swainson is on bass. Swainson played on a few albums with Bickert, including "Third Floor Richard" (1989), "This Is New" (1990), and "Trio Sketches" (1994). Ed recorded regularly with bassist Steve Wallace in the mid-1980s, and with bassist Don Thompson in the 1970s and early 1980s.

    Wow! great git player... so sweet and right in time! I love that he's playing a tele... so many Jazz guitarists just didn't get it that Fender (and Gibson) solid body electric guitars are so much more versatile and expressive than their hollowbody near equivalents. Been there. Got it.

    The left hand affect on tone is huge - even what shape your calluses are in makes a big difference to the overall tone. Also, when you release and re-apply pressure with your left hand very much affects the tone. One of the reasons why some guys who studied the hell out of Benson's right hand still can't get the tone is because they're ignoring the left hand.
    Oh yeah - about Ed.......GREAT as usual!!!

    Lenny Breau, Ted Greene, and this guy...The only explanation is that there's nothing to do in Canada but play hockey and burn up jazz guitar!

    • @floydturner2346
      @floydturner2346 6 років тому +4

      Lenny Breau was born in Maine and died in Los Angeles, although he spent a great deal of his life in Canada on account of a move by his parents when he was young and later, by choice. Ted Greene was born and died in California and has no connection with Canada except for his admiration for Ed Bickert, to whom he alludes in "Chord Chemistry" as an influence. And by the way, I'm a 63-year-old Canadian; I've never played hockey or seen a hockey game and don't have a single friend who ever has. And yes, Ed Bickert is the most complete Jazz guitarist ever to pick up the instrument.

    The drummer is Buff Allen who lives in Vancouver now. Bassist is Neil Swainson.

  • @elguitaro

    Very true!
    His drummer could very well be Terry Clarke, who is a veteran of the Toronto jazz scene that Ed was, and though he's retired, still is a big part of. Don't quote me on that though.

    @victorescallier a lot of us round that time in Toronto adopted that set up - for me it was the angle that worked for consistent axisof the wrists. Looked cool to. And certainly dried the cymbals sound. Say hi To Buff!

    It's kind of when you play lines with your left hand without even using your right hand... with all pull offs and what not. I kind of do that all the time when I'm playing with both hands. And also just how I touch the fretboard... I press harder or lighter depending on the importance of the note, and it changes the depth of the sound. And playing lines with a more fluid approach in my left hand (caressing) makes for an ultimately smoother tone, even without using my right hand at all.

  • @loren1283
    @loren1283 15 років тому +2

    Agreed, if all you needed for great tone was a thick pick, big strings and a nice amp almost everyone would have great tone. nope, its ALL in the hands thats why great guitarists sound the same no matter what instrument or amp they are using. This whole TONE argument is largly a construct of manufacurers to keep musicians buying gear. Eds Great.

  • @mattlandonmusic
    @mattlandonmusic 15 років тому

    I'm terrible with a pick and almost always play fingerstyle so I've worked very hard on my left hand technique to make it sound like I'm using a pick.

    If you blindfolded me Id say he was playing a Gibson 335 with flatwound strings neck pickup only,,,,I heard about Ed from a Ted Greene interview in Just Jazz Guitar
    I never dreamed a Tele could sound this "jazzy",,,,
    Off to buy a Tele and mount a humbucker as a neck pickup,,,,DD

      One of the most common mistakes in the world of 'tone' is confusing a musical aesthetic associated with a certain instrument and then assuming the instrument causes 'a tone' when its really musicality. Passive electric instruments are very consistent and hard to distinguish one from the other. There is a lot of long standing an very widely held 'belief' about how certain models of guitars are supposed to sound that frankly, isn't true. An Ibanez can sound 'warm and jazzy', a L5 can sound like a pointy shred machine if you wet the signal right.

    @victorescallier Hey man...Why'd he keep his cymbals high like that, was it that he didn't want to mix the frequencies of the drums or something ?

    What kind of pickup is that at the neck end of his guitar. What is his amp? I've never heard tone that sweet out of a Tele. Somebody out there tell me...please.

    • @ghairraigh
      @ghairraigh 7 років тому

      Ed played that Tele for many years with the stock pick-ups, then installed a Gibson Humbucker in the neck position.

  • @TallSomeone
    @TallSomeone 13 років тому

    What amp is he using?

  • @mattlandonmusic
    @mattlandonmusic 16 років тому

    The tone comes from him man, not his guitar. Watch how his left hand caresses the neck of the guitar... that's where that tone comes from. Aside from Ed's incredible virtuosity, I'd really like to know who the drummer is. He is smooooth. Very lyrical soloing.

  • @mattlandonmusic
    @mattlandonmusic 15 років тому

    I respectfully disagree, and I'm speaking from experience. My left hand chops have more to do with my tone than my right hand chops. I can produce the same tone with or without a pick by adjusting my left hand. As far as my playing goes, it's all about how you touch the neck. I guess I don't really have the right to say where Ed's tone comes from.

    I hate when people say things like 'he's so underrated'. How the hell is Ed Bickert underrated? Everyone knows how bad (bad in a good way-as the kids would say today) he is, I don't hear people running around saying "yeah Ed Bickert's ok, but man check out Fieldy from Korn, different instrument, but man that's MUSIC!" Just my rant, don't over-analyze it.

    Be nice to hear Master Bickert with the bass un-amped. That amped, nasal sound was a fad for a while, but it's tedious, in my opinion. Needs to be rich and beneath Ed's smooth center.

  • @MrBongoagogo
    @MrBongoagogo 4 роки тому

    Right on ed Tele sounds round and fat with a humbucker in it.fat walking bassline indeed.

  • @SeerTrulth
    @SeerTrulth 9 років тому +2

    God, I have to again say that young boy's bass is hard to listen to, tone-wise, with that amp sound. Ray Brown would be the perfect complement to Ed here.
