This video is of Longry and her friend Leah personal experiences while vacationing in the beautiful fishing village of the Town of Vaxholm. Vaxholm is known as the "gateway to Roslagen" because it is a hub for travel to most of the islands in the Swedish Archipelago. Vaxholm has been a fishing village for centuries and herring fishing was historically the main industry. The Town of Vaxholm also has a significant military history. Vaxholm sits along one of the main shipping routes into Stockholm Harbor and is the nearest of the main archipelago islands to Stockholm, Sweden. The Stockholm archipelago is made up of approximately 24,000 islands. The location of Vaxholm made it strategically important, so a fortress (known as Vaxholm Castle or Vaxholms Kastell in Swedish) was built there in the mid 1500's by King Gustav Vasa and it became a military outpost for almost five centuries. The Vaxholm Castle is located on a tiny island separated by a narrow channel from Vaxholm Island and is reached by a small cable-operated ferry.
The Town of Vaxholm itself is comprised of about 70 small islands and a great place to just walk around and experience all the beautiful sights (such as the Vaxholm Harbor and Vaxholm Castle), parks, cafes, shops, and restaurants. You will see Vaxholm's marine character reflected in many of these businesses. You will notice that the homes in Vaxholm are mainly constructed of wood. This was the only material you could legally build with up until 1912. The idea behind this is that it could easily be razed to the ground if the Russians invaded, so they wouldn't get anything of value.
If your looking to stay overnight at Vaxholm, the Vaxholm Hotel is a really nice place. This yellow hotel is right in front of where the ferry from Stockholm docks. The rooms at the Vaxholm Hotel have great views of the Vaxholm Castle and the Vaxholm Harbor

If you want to go to Vaxholm by bus you can take 670 from "Tekniska Högskolan" on the red subway line. Or take the same line at Danderyd (also on the red line) if it's more convenient (like at evening rush hour).

That walk you took along the waters edge are old coastal artillery positions from the 19th century built to reinforce the Fort. If you are in a boat out on the water there you see old gun positions everywhere around you on the islands.
Up until world war 1 this is where the main defence line was against an invader trying to attack Stockholm was located.

Delicate, quiet, small, peaceful , old fashioned. That’s why Sweden applied to join the NATO.

George, thanks for watching. Due to the fact that Vaxholm is on its own island gives it that very peaceful and relaxing feeling. Don't forget to check out the other videos in the playlist.
