Crimea became part of Russia in 1783, if memory serves. In 1954, Khruschev re-assigned it to Ukraine which was then still part of the USSR. After 1991, Ukraine took over Crimea but Crimea has never been happy with that situation as most of the population is Russian.
Crimea had its own devolved parliament for a while and they have tried to move back to Russia several times not least following the US-led coup in 2014. Ukraine started killing ethnic Russians in Ukraine after that and around 14,000 people died.
Both Donbas and Ukraine have voted to leave Ukraine and re-align with Russia. The Western media are ignoring that part of history and keep claiming "unprovoked attack" when, in reality, Russia was trying to stop its kinfolk being killed.

Russia applied a bit of a straightener, yesterday. The West floated newspaper articles suggesting that Western troops might be sent to Ukraine, officially. They don't count the unofficial ones!
Russia immediately summoned the UK and French ambassadors and explained the rules to them. There was retraction of the idea of French troops in Ukraine within half an hour of that meeting.
