Chief Taster and owner of West London Wine School, South London Wine School, and Streatham Wine House, Jimmy Smith, takes you through the fascinating and challenging world of Biodynamics.
DISCLAIMER ON STEINER'S ANTHROPOSOPHY: When discussing biodynamics and its' beginnings you inevitably have to reference the creator of the movement, Rudolph Steiner. As briefly mentioned within the video, Steiner created the Anthroposophical Society and within that organization, many of Steiner's racist and unsettling viewpoints can be unearthed. This is an educational wine video and is NOT designed to discuss the issues of anthroposophy (and there are many that can be noted). It has been created to try and provide a comprehensive study of biodynamics in agriculture and viticulture. I have still made a short reference to anthroposophy and to some of Steiner's disturbing views in the video, however. I did this while I believe it is important to learn about biodynamics since it is accepted and practiced by many winemakers, grape growers (and other types of farmers) around the world today. It should also be acknowledged that this movement was created by an individual who held racist and other controversial views as documented in his writings and published works.
Our biodynamic series is not directly related to any wine course or qualification but you certainly found this useful if you are studying your WSET Level 4 (WSET Diploma) in Wines.

One thing I'm not understanding: if you're adding say 1g of nettle prep to 10 tons, isn't that 1:9,000,000? 10 tons of compost seems like an insane amount. Is this in reference to the topsoil itself? And how could such a small amount be adequately incorporated completely into such a massive volume? I think I'm just missing something here.

Hi Joe - yes, its approximately 1g to 10-15 tonnes of compost - these are powerful, homeopathic additions.

Hi Jimmy, it explained so much. I am always confused biodynamic and organic. Do you think organic will be the future instead of biodynamic?

I don't think it needs to be one nor the other, and they are entwined as concepts.

@@WineWithJimmy I see. Thank you. I feel I need to digest the knowledge with more videos.Btw I passed the WSET level 3 with some luck last year, I have to tell your videos help me so much to refresh all the knowledge, and make some points vivid and easy to remember. I appreciate them:) Thank you so much.
I guess I may not go further, stop pursuing the diploma but will continue follow you and learn wine :)

Hi Jimmy. Thank you for the amazing videos, truly grateful for your teachings.
Would you recommend a couple books on biodynamic farming? Sown that may offer a comprehensive overview.
    Thank you again!!!

Hi Mandy - definitely NOT Steiner's book as its quite long-winded and you need a phd in psychology to understand it. I'd say Monty Waldin's book is pretty good, and more practically Maria Thun.

At 15:08 you discuss dandelion flowers (presumably Taraxacum sp) but the photo shows not the flower or the composite flower head, which is yellow, but the seed head in which each white, hair-like fiber is connected to a single seed.
You also state here "[Dandelion flowers are] stuffed into . . . the connective tissue of a cow's stomach . . ." 1) What connective tissue is found in a cow's stomach? I have not been able to identity any. 2) How does the biodynamitist stuff anything into said connective tissue? Most connective tissue (bones are the exception) do not contain cavities that may be stuffed.

Calm down please. I don't sit on UA-cam responding to messages 24-7 contrary to what you may think. UA-cam is a free service I offer and is not my priority when I have five businesses to look after. In response to your questions - I am citing Rudolph Steiner's works - you are best to ask the question to a biodynamic agronomist who will prepare these practices. For my vineyard and composting I purchase pre-prepared treatments as I don't have the ability to carry out these often overtly interesting and sometime odd practices.

@@WineWithJimmy Thank you for taking the time to respond, but just let me say that "if [you] don't sit on UA-cam . . . 24-7," you nonetheless responded to both my first and second comments within 24 hours. And in your first response, you did encourage me to post again. (I know, it helps the algorythm.) As for your vineyard and composting purchases, do you purchase certified bio-dynamic products? If so, how does the cost compare to similar, non-certified products? How does the effectiveness of biodynamic products compare to other products? Have you attempted to compare competing products in your own vineyard? Further, as I understand it, at least some of the biodynamic preparations need to be prepared in YOUR vineyard, which would make it hard for a product prepared elsewhere to be truly biodynamic for YOUR vineyard.
