- VICE meets a few surviving members of Los Frikis, a Cuban punk movement, who purposely infected themselves with HIV in the early 90s. The punks used this method as a way to get sent to government-sanctioned sanatoriums where they were given better resources than they had on the streets.

My uncle was one of these people. I remember visiting him in the sanatorium as a young child. Cuban families are notoriously honest; they never hid the truth of my uncle's illness of how he administered the HIV virus himself which eventually became full-blown AIDS. Thank you Viceland for this little piece of history.

This isn't just "living off benefits" as I've seen some in comments say.. during "special period" of Cuba, people had no running water, no clean water to drink, no salt, no way to get to work, no fuel to cook food if they even had it, it was brutal to live. I can totally see why people did this and it was absolutely for survival, and to maybe give oneself an "end date" because it seemed so bleak. I feel for these people very much, do not judge them...

I'm with Daniel on this one. Sounded a lot like they just wanted to rock and roll. They didn't even know what HIV was, they just knew they would end up in the sanatarium where they could be with their other auto-infected friends and listen to rock and drink rum.

my mom was a big part of the friki scene. her friends got arrested a ton of times just for existing. she recalls her friki days positively though, and she tells me more about the music and parties and friendship than the suffering. really shows how much support the frikis had for each other

I saw pictures of those days from people who visited as tourist, there were not many obese like in America but there was no skinny bones either. Everyone got their portion of vitamins, proteins even under the harshest ambargo in history of humanity

First thought you get by reading the headline, is that these people are insane and are begging for death. But once you watch the video, it's actually quite sad. Cuba was/is a poor country and this act of auto-infection was meant to provide them with free housing, food and bed- the basic human needs. They'd probably had starved or died from diseases caused by malnutrition.

There's a good Radiolab episode about this. It explains that they had essentially no information about the disease at the time but they knew that special housing was being built for the infected, and they were already societal outcasts. It sounded like a place where they could just jam and do whatever they wanted with their needs provided, so they took it, and it actually was the way they thought it would be for a little while. They didn't realize the seriousness of the disease until it was too late when they had already started getting sicker and dying off.
Gerson is a bit less sympathetic because he actually infected himself fairly late when the mortality rate was already evident, but it's described as essentially committing suicide. Most of his friends were already dead and he was depressed and then he was sentenced to prison for some dumb charge, and he thought going out with what few friends he still had in relative freedom was a better alternative to jail. He just happened to live.
It's not noble or romantic or whatever, and it's hard to fault the frikis for doing what they did at the time given what information they had and what their life was like, even if it was doing something drastic with little information. I suppose it was reckless. Mostly though it's just tragic.

Wow. After reading lots of these comments, im realising that the majority of the ppl commenting heard a way different story than I guess I personally did. I was under the impression that these people.. seems to be mainly kids, truly didnt understand how serious HIV was. And instead of thinking, "this'll show 'em", I thought the people being interviewed at least seemed to think that being, in their minds, *a little sick*, was a better option than being without basic amenities, and on top of that he got to be with his group he identified so heavily with. Of course when I read the title of the video I felt the same as the majority of people in the comments seem to. But after hearing ( I guess the man guy in the videos story), I felt more like, "god damn, what a sad story about a confused young man, and what a heavy story seeing him reflect on his past knowing the full truth now." I guess what I'm saying is its a very heavy video if we can belive that some of these people truly didn't know what they had done to themselves. The ones that did, I can't really speak for. Hope this made sense to someone,, haha.

Here in québec the winters are so cold, its very hard to be in the streets, and I knew a lot of homeless punk who made smalls infraction just to get few months of jail at the beggining of each winter. So they were a gang of friends together in a warm and comfortable place, with matress, showers, food, tv... and were out for the spring. But for the HIV thing its really extreme! Life is so unfair, why some persons have to suffer that much, all this story is very sad.
Such a sad set of events. I'm speechless as this is the first time I have heard of Autointoxication of HIV in this context. I have seen evidence of what is called "Bug chasing" a very small number who deliberately try to acquire HIV as a method of "Ultimate self injury". Two cases I know a lot about both in the UK.

It was the usa that caused the special period though. They starved cuba. No country could trade with the usa if they traded with cuba. We're blessed to be American though.

People miss the point and it's really sad. We often see shows like "Conan in Cuba" or the Kardashians going to Cuba and people think that Cuba is "not that bad" because of bad media that only shows what they want to show or show the nice things only because people don't want to see people starving on tv or being beaten for speaking against their government. At that time going to a sanatorioum was good for them because there they would have food and all their needs met. Plus HIV virus was new and no one knew nothing about it. Stop commenting rude things behind the comforts of your house and educate yourselves. You might not understand something but you shouldn't judge so harshly then because you might not know what oppression is since here in the U.S you can say whatever you want against the government and you or your family won't be beaten tourtured for it.

stlbum69 I don't know what Los Frikis stood for but what I do see is a group of people who were treated like dirt for having a different lifestyle than that of what the regimen wanted them to live. I don't think they did what they did because they were lazy scums or "retards" like people jump quickly to say but because that's the escape they found and unless you've been in their shoes no one can say what it was like. It is bizarre seeing a documentary about your home town in Pinar Del Río. I have personally seen these people, especially the two in the beginning very frequently when I was a child and young adult in Cuba.

I don't mean this offensively but... this wasn't just about "partying". If you read about what was called Cuba's "special period", people were trapped by government that claimed to support their every need when it really didn't, they had absolutely nothing, and this was a weird way of obtaining necessities for survival (food, clean water, a safer place to sleep) as well as making "the best" of a truly awful situation. It sounds abstract and crazy, but read about Cuba's history. This wasn't just a "welfare scam".
What "lifestyle" can you change when you don't have the essentials to survive?

Cuba has some of the best HIV care in the world and was the first country to completely eliminate mother to infant HIV transmission. HIV is a chronic condition but can be managed, it doesn't even necessarily reduce your life expectancy
