I'm an electronics design engineer by trade and actually take a lot of value learning from the design stupidities you find in these machines. Thanks to your explanations of where an engineer effed up I'm now paying more attention to seemingly simple things like pad layout around connectors that undergo mechanical stress. Design doesn't end at the schematic and that is definitely not taught well in schools and universities.
I'm glad this video is here on UA-cam. Went into apple to have them try to fix this issue. They told me the laptop was too old and they no longer have parts to fix this. I asked them if they could just add flux and the apple employee went on to explain that the RAM is soldered so there's no way to fix it then proceeded to attempt to sell us a new macbook. Bought my own flux, did it myself and fixed it. Saved me from needing to buy a new macbook. Never going to genius bar again.
Some time ago i bought a soldering station with hot air for my hobby and today i could successfully get an air mid 2011 running again. many thanks to louis for encouraging and teaching many of us to repair our own laptops.
I had to Google what reflowing actually does. Apparently, over time fractures can form in the solder. Reflowing melts the solder and therefore gets rid of the fractures in it. Thank you Louis for sending me down this shallow rabbit hole. I learned something!
Stephen Deinema yeah cause environmental types think electronics using 60/40 solder polluted water(sorry but roughly 70% of ground d lead contamination comes from old car batteries and abandoned small scale gas station tanks from when gas had lead in it) and if electronics we're issue just make it rule to recycle electronics, easy enough. So now we have Rhos compliant ie low lead solder, which kills electronics very quickly as high tin content solder grows hairs or crystals. Main reason satellites and such in outer space now fail quickly as crap solder grows those hairs and shorts out faster in zero g. Fun fact.
I spent 8 years working for a rather stingy Polish fellow. Reflowing GPUs on PC and older Mac laptops was one of the few things he took the time to teach me, and was a regular part of the work I had to do. Sometimes the repairs would only last days, sometimes months, sometimes years. I would always warn the customer of this beforehand and would always honour the warranty when things went sour, or offer to credit them for the work toward a different laptop while purchasing the remaining parts for a reasonable sum. While there were many we couldn't save, the ones we could were kept out of the landfill for at least a little while longer and made the customer happy. I think the practice, when done honestly, is worthwhile for this reason. Far too many people in our culture treat tech like disposable trash because we are spoiled by how plentiful and cheap the machinery has become.
Just wanted to thank you. I followed this process for 10 sec on each module but with less flux :) and problem was solved. I hope it lasts long and the problem doesn't come back!
"If the chip is bad, this will not fix it, do not do this to a graphics chip, it will not work". 2 weeks later somebody will do exactly that and then try to blame your video lol
Many thanks for this amazingly detailed video, I've just carried out the same repair on my daughters mid 2011 Air after watching you and it worked again first time
Last week I began to get the three beeps on my 2013 MBP, I just opened it up and removed the RAM and reinserted them. Fixed the problem! Good to know this can be done to on board RAM modules too.
Great video as usual. Had an interesting one come in around a month ago. MacBook Air 13" 2012 needed a battery replacement. Ordered and installed the replacement battery, and the machine booted up with 3 RAM error beeps, but only when running on battery power. Connected the power adapter and the machine booted normally. Removed the battery and reinstalled the original one, and the beeps went away. Reinstalled the replacement battery again, and the machine would beep on battery power. DOA returned the battery, installed the second replacement, and the issue was resolved. Customer has been using it without issue for 3-4 weeks now. These were genuine batteries (AASP), and I don't know what caused it, but would absolutely be interested to find out and intend to investigate a little more soon. I thought perhaps it was some kind of voltage drop during startup when the battery was placed under load, or other anomalies with the embedded controller (in one instance it passed testing, then failed "No Battery Installed" after reboot) but that's purely speculative - I need to read up on this a little more first to be sure. An interesting one in any case.

12:14 Hehe that satisfying smile face just after the Apple chime, like when u got the point among your untrusty friends "Yesssss mate! I won here!! Just go flux yourself" ;)
I'm just hooked on these videos. I have so many dumb questions I want to ask. Is there a video anywhere that kind of overviews all the techniques you use?
tried doing this on a A1370 since it had the 3 beep error. Set my quick 857dw+ to 450C (max temp) and about 50% airflow. spent a few minutes heating one of the chips up but it never moved as if it was glued in place before being reflowed in the factory. Everything around it reflowed perfectly fine, even one of the capacitors had the audacity to fly off the board while I was trying to reflow that memory chip but the chip never budged.
What did you use to heat the flux? It's not clear which model it is of the heating instrument you're using. But I will visit the website also to see if it's mentioned. Thanks 💻💻💻
hi Louis, I’m big fan of yours.. I once worked in ITAD here in Dubai. Now I’m a freelance Tech but not a board level. What is the model of your Cam I just want to buy same as yours. Thank you for your quick reply..
Hello Louis and team, Im from Germany and have the same problem with my Macbook Air 2011. Im guessing that it is the RAM as well. May I ask you, if the flux is with or without lead? Since I need my Mac for work and would have to wait several weeks until it arrives here, I would rather buy flux from a national distributor. Thanks in advance for your reply! Greets, Robert
I have a question, why does this work? basically, you put flux on the ram chips and then apply hot air until they move and then just plug in everything and it works ... I just want to understand why would this work.
i think this macbook will come again to you. semiconductors respond to the heat. and i know about flip chip BGAs. but in this case it is like tantal capacitor. after heating it will work some time but it will die again. just try next time to heat the RAMs only - not reflow and it will work too for some time. it will be evidence that reflow doesn't work in this case of issue. only replacement in all probability will work.
I have 11" Mid-2011 Macbook Air, after did this repair it slows down significantly now. I got to clean install the OS and the problem still persists, the cursor keeps stuttering and it's really hard to do even a basic task. Any thoughts? Thanks
I’ve got a question to do with repairing a RAM stick, figured people here would know something useful - One of the SMD caps (or resistors I’m not sure) broke off my RAM stick and now it no longer works. If I just shorted the two pads where the capacitor/resistor used to be with a bit of solder do you think there’s a reasonable chance the RAM would work again?
It's a resistor more than likely, knocking off a decoupling cap shouldn't kill it. Unfortunately you need to replace the resistor with one of the same value to fix it.
Jernej: While generally true I wouldn't bet my horses on that ... the faster stuff gets, the more important becomes decoupling. I used to have a bootleg arcade board from the 80s with ~80 chips which had no decoupling for individual chips (just one big bulk electrolytic for the power rail) and worked just fine (CPU clocked at 4MHz) - yet an ARM based expansion for that machine (~200MHz) stopped working when one of the tiny 47nF caps for decoupling the SRAM broke off. In either case ... don't short out connections unless you know what you're doing, chances are good it might kill your hardware for good if you don't.
what are your views on the general manufacturing quality of these boards? in many of your videos I notice not quite up to standard soldering, imperfectly aligned components, dull and inconsistent fillets, basically all the hallmarks of slightly crappy production processes. thoughts? (to be 100% clear, I'm talking about the original manufacturing, not your work)
help! my macbook still turns on, but about 5 mins into using it, the screen will freeze with horizontal lines and 3 beeps will be heard until it will black out.. i tried opening the RAM and put it back again, turned on my macbook but 3 beeps still happens about 5mins into using it.. what should i do?
I have almost the same issue, flickering and freezing display, and macbook air a1370 start resetting. I did clearing SMC, NVRAM etc, the problem still exist, but when I plugged out the battery, the macbook is running well. Is it RAM issue ?
hello Louis, do not speak English, help me with a translator, could you please indicate what temperature should I use the heat station? How long should I submit the VRAMs to the heat to be reshaped? I have the same problem. Thanks for your time
I have a 2010 MBA with three beeps... pink/green/black/ square pixels appearances if the Mac was physically moved suddenly followed by a system freeze....a ram module went undetected, and it stopped charging in its dying days. It now lives in its original box it came in :^(
I have Air A1370 k78-mlb I also have 3 times but I do not have a voltage on the ppv core. I have to replace max 15092 or look for a bug elsewhere :/ Thank you very much for the answer
Usually 3 beeps means a RAM issue,I have a PC that beeps 3 times when there's no actual video output source turned on.I guess it's an OEM specific design? (Yes I wasted time to find a RAM specific issue)
Do you know what causes the flashing camera or no camera detected issue on a 2014 air? because i have a bunch of them at work like this and its so so annoying!
Hey Louis, i have a 17 inch a1297 mac which beeps 3times and no display. Tried all possibilities with ram change and slot change. Nothing turned up. Any way what could be it?
Hi Louis Rossman I'm from Mexico , i have a question for you my computer bip as in your video , so if I rep lease the Ram my computer will work good ? I don't want the information I just want that my computer woks
I do have an issue with three beeps but the version is retina early 2013 the model is A1398, Is it possible to do that way and it’ll work or there’s an other way to do so ? Please need ur help and thank you
Louis, I need your help man. I got a retina macbook pro and I have destroyed that black cover sheet around the CPU chip that exposes the die (was cleaning a horrendous thermal paste job). What can I do to fix that? I've heard there are issues if I try to boot the machine without that sheet installed.
I feel like you should just upload the live streams back on the channel because you can't tell which clips are from which streams so you run into repeated content plus the time spent editing. I mean there's a 5 hour stream on there, how many of these videos just this passed week came from that? I hope you see what I'm getting at and I appreciate the content regardless.
Normal chips use wire bonds internally to link the die to the balls/pads on the underside, a flip chip the die is flipped over and doesn't use wire bonds to link to the pads but instead uses another layer of solder balls internally. See www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/43310/flip-chip
Are you sure an extention or something isn't blocking it? Looks to still be there to me... I may delete it at some point but here's a dropbox link: www.dropbox.com/s/c6tsc4agcopn5gh/FuckTheHaters.gif?dl=0

Wait there's a small speaker in there or does it beep thru the main speakers?
Kopaz who??, show him the door lol.
There's no piezo beeper on the logic board. So, it most likely comes out of the speakers on the unit.
No apple store relocation nearby?
I tried this ..2times..
But the problem still there...
I need a solution brother...

"Don't want to use too much flux"
proceeds to use the most flux I've ever seen him use on this channel...
Schultheis Studios lol idk he always uses lots :P
Flux is miracle stuff, i dont blame him lol
You must be new here
Is that two pauls of flux, or three?

You do know that RoHS doesn't apply to aerospace , medical and generally any "critical" industry , you know that ,do you ?
MonzaRacer - Yeah, aerospace, military and medical electronics are exempt from RoHS rules on leaf solder for that exact reason.

The technician who does this hears "If the chip is bad, this will fix it, do do this to a graphics chip, it will work"
Many thanks for this amazingly detailed video, I've just carried out the same repair on my daughters mid 2011 Air after watching you and it worked again first time
i love the microscope view i can actually see what you are doing
this is the mac equivalent to taking the ram out and putting it back in that on most PC laptops takes all of about 2 minutes or less
Yes, but the MacBook is thinner. Everybody wants and asked for thinner, right?
Hirson Florian Go away...
Hirson Florian :P
Hirson Florian no, but it's the only one with a 100% chance it has it soldered
soldered RAM is unfortunately the standard on UltraBook PCs. If it's thin like a MacBook, it's gonna have soldered RAM.
Last week I began to get the three beeps on my 2013 MBP, I just opened it up and removed the RAM and reinserted them. Fixed the problem! Good to know this can be done to on board RAM modules too.
"you better not beep. this'll be such a waste of flux if you beep." I shit you not my microwave beeped as he finished that sentence and I lost my shit
All i ever learn here on this channel is the Legendary Louis does it again,;-) GENIUS

Just got this come in my shop yesterday on the 2011. I just ordered a $99 replacement board.
I left a like when I heard the intro reaction. If I could, I would also leave another like at 12:58
It's the the sound of the customer bending over for the second time and reversing back into the apple store. Pants down.
Hey, what temperarure should i set my heater/blower? Thanks
Dunno what you talking about, i reflowed my r9 280 twice, no flux cuz i'm a badass, works like a charm
tried doing this on a A1370 since it had the 3 beep error. Set my quick 857dw+ to 450C (max temp) and about 50% airflow. spent a few minutes heating one of the chips up but it never moved as if it was glued in place before being reflowed in the factory. You f....ing rock Louis!
Both Microscope and overhead. I like seeing the work done up close and personal but sometimes overhead is better so it depends on the job.
I always find it fascinating that the hot air is accurate enough to reflow the chips but not blow off the tiny components right next to the chips.
Thanks Master of Logic boards
you have to love lead free solder.
What did you use to heat the flux? It's not clear which model it is of the heating instrument you're using. But I will visit the website also to see if it's mentioned. Thanks 💻💻💻
5:00 After I heard "120 liters per minute of", I automatically thought about flux. =)
This looks like a LOT of FUN.
U r a life saver man...

hi Louis, I’m big fan of yours.. I once worked in ITAD here in Dubai. Now I’m a freelance Tech but not a board level. What is the model of your Cam I just want to buy same as yours. Thank you for your quick reply..
Hello Louis and team,
Im from Germany and have the same problem with my Macbook Air 2011. Im guessing that it is the RAM as well. May I ask you, if the flux is with or without lead? Since I need my Mac for work and would have to wait several weeks until it arrives here, I would rather buy flux from a national distributor.
Thanks in advance for your reply!
Greets, Robert
Louis, I have a question.
How many people have you seen so far that run either multiboot or linux on their macbook?
I run multiboot myself.
Hi Louis. Do you have videos grouped into their specific nodel for easier searches? Thank you. Love your channel and your hard work.
not by model, but I do have playlists for specific issues
Never been to the store but apparently I once smoked weed about 5 blocks away before watching a movie one block away.
Greetings from New Haven.
Is it 500c to melt the ram solder? If not, what temperature is required?
I have a question, why does this work? basically, you put flux on the ram chips and then apply hot air until they move and then just plug in everything and it works ... I just want to understand why would this work.
Im sure that what happened is that reheating the points completed the connection lost over time from repeated used and movement and use.
I'm about to purchase a 2015 13" pro with the same problem (for $200), I'm hoping I can do the same thing to revive it.
i think this macbook will come again to you. semiconductors respond to the heat. and i know about flip chip BGAs. but in this case it is like tantal capacitor. after heating it will work some time but it will die again.
just try next time to heat the RAMs only - not reflow and it will work too for some time. it will be evidence that reflow doesn't work in this case of issue. only replacement in all probability will work.
You're awesome bro...
I love your videos so much that it almost makes me want to buy an Apple product just so I can see you repair it... Almost
Question : What does it mean, when a Macbook Air beeps three times?
Answer 1 of 2 : RUN!!!
Answer 2 of 2 : Why did you buy a Macbook Air?
I have 11" Mid-2011 Macbook Air, after did this repair it slows down significantly now. I got to clean install the OS and the problem still persists, the cursor keeps stuttering and it's really hard to do even a basic task. Any thoughts? Thanks
I’ve got a question to do with repairing a RAM stick, figured people here would know something useful -
One of the SMD caps (or resistors I’m not sure) broke off my RAM stick and now it no longer works. If I just shorted the two pads where the capacitor/resistor used to be with a bit of solder do you think there’s a reasonable chance the RAM would work again?
No because many times the capacitor is in parallel across the power rails and you'd be creating a dead short.
stonent Ok, thank you.
At this point, who gives a flux about Macs.
There's money to be made repairing crap for sheeple.
Louis gives far too many flux sometimes....
He gives too many flux for many reason, like you can easily see the chips move and also avoid the chips from over heating.
You are awesome dude
I learned today that there is a shortage of airflow nozzles. I need to fill up my garage with them.
Did you get linuses' iMac?
Man my air just went down on me like this!! Is this fix done on the regular?
what are your views on the general manufacturing quality of these boards? in many of your videos I notice not quite up to standard soldering, imperfectly aligned components, dull and inconsistent fillets, basically all the hallmarks of slightly crappy production processes. thoughts? (to be 100% clear, I'm talking about the original manufacturing, not your work)
500 degrees Celsius? I would think that would cook the board and the chips. I don't solder these chips at any more than 350 degrees C normally.
Hello Louis, What do you think how it will take before somebody brings you new MacBook Pro 2018 for repair?
help! my macbook still turns on, but about 5 mins into using it, the screen will freeze with horizontal lines and 3 beeps will be heard until it will black out.. i tried opening the RAM and put it back again, turned on my macbook but 3 beeps still happens about 5mins into using it.. what should i do?
Damn I wanted to do a ram upgrade on my air but looking at this makes me happy with my 4gb of ram
Thanks for your time
You should just add camera selections to your live streams, so people can just chose the camera they like to see. 🤗
I just baked mine and it was fixed.
I have a 2010 MBA with three beeps... pink/green/black/ square pixels appearances if the Mac was physically moved suddenly followed by a system freeze....a ram module went undetected, and it stopped charging in its dying days. It now lives in its original box it came in :^(
What do you use to clean the flux residue after a repair?
Can I do this with Mac mini (late 2014)? It also have this superb soldered ram.
Lois what temp do you have your air station set to to do this repair?
I have Air A1370 k78-mlb I also have 3 times but I do not have a voltage on the ppv core.
I have to replace max 15092 or look for a bug elsewhere :/ Thank you very much for the answer
Man I wish your repair shop is near my place. I would be a regular customer. Hehe
Hi, Louis! At what temperature was the hot air station? Thank you!
he said 500 , in the us is Fahrenheit , it's 260 Celsius !!
Can a shorted ram module cause no fan spin and no power cable green light? I think I messed up my reflow :)
Louis is windowshaming Paul.
2:31 you mean 4 not 8, the 2011 only had a Max of 4, the 2012 can have 8 though
Try to fix boot by removing bios battery, and press power for 15 seconds before resorting to this.
Usually 3 beeps means a RAM issue,I have a PC that beeps 3 times when there's no actual video output source turned on.I guess it's an OEM specific design? (Yes I wasted time to find a RAM specific issue)
Mate what gel u put on the keyboard
Do you know what causes the flashing camera or no camera detected issue on a 2014 air? because i have a bunch of them at work like this and its so so annoying!
Hey Louis, i have a 17 inch a1297 mac which beeps 3times and no display. Tried all possibilities with ram change and slot change. Nothing turned up. Any way what could be it?
Can anyone give me advice on what temperature I need to set my reflow station to do a reflow on the ram on. A MacBook Air? Thanks guys
Hey lois can you do a vid on a Dell Lap Top that shuts down immediately while booting?
Hi Louis Rossman I'm from Mexico , i have a question for you my computer bip as in your video , so if I rep lease the Ram my computer will work good ? I don't want the information I just want that my computer woks
I do have an issue with three beeps but the version is retina early 2013 the model is A1398,
Is it possible to do that way and it’ll work or there’s an other way to do so ? Please need ur help and thank you
Louis, I need your help man. I got a retina macbook pro and I have destroyed that black cover sheet around the CPU chip that exposes the die (was cleaning a horrendous thermal paste job). What can I do to fix that? I've heard there are issues if I try to boot the machine without that sheet installed.
Is there anyway to recover the data from the hard drive on a mac doing this?
Hi. New viewer. What does Flux do?
wouldn't the cost to repair be more than the Mac value? Why would you get this repaired?
Could someone explain to me why re flowing chips fix issues? Like why would the process of melting the solder fix issues?
I feel like you should just upload the live streams back on the channel because you can't tell which clips are from which streams so you run into repeated content plus the time spent editing. I mean there's a 5 hour stream on there, how many of these videos just this passed week came from that? I hope you see what I'm getting at and I appreciate the content regardless.
What is it flip chip design? Whats the difference between ram and GPU and other bga chip?
Normal chips use wire bonds internally to link the die to the balls/pads on the underside, a flip chip the die is flipped over and doesn't use wire bonds to link to the pads but instead uses another layer of solder balls internally. See www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/43310/flip-chip
3 deeps problem if you hit ram it can work for short time
Two fingers up, Oh yeah!!!
