- What is Mulm? Is Mulm bad? Will Mulm kill my fish? What is Detritus? The answer to all those questions is......maybe! Michael's Fish Room UA-cam runs a breeding for profit fish room and the tanks are not show tanks.

This explains a lot, and takes the guilt out if keeping it in a well established planted tank. I'll rest easier with regular water changes and not worry about the mulm. Thank you for this video!
My pleasure!
I'd say bad. Trashing your friends store compititlon is bad.
My shrimp munch tons of mulp.
Lol...are you drunk Mark?
Mulm sclom I don't care if you raise your guppies in a sewer, I'm just happy you use the word "FRY" and not "FRIES".
Bwhahahaha
That has to be one of my peeves lol
I have not vacuumed in 3 years of any of my breeder tanks and my high-end guppies sell for a lot of money. I think water changes are #1 and that takes care of itself.
Boom!
People who don't understand mulm really don't understand nature. An aquarium is basically just like a lake, it is fed new water via streams just like we feed new water in via water changes, and sediment sinks to the bottom of the lake where it is slowly broken down and it is either carried away by the currents, it is eaten by fish or plants or bacteria, or it simply settles and becomes part of the sediment. As long as there is fresh water coming in to remove the excess bad nitrogen then quite frankly it doesn't matter what's on the bottom of the tank as long as it is not poisonous on its own. I wonder what people think they are walking on when they go to the lake and walk around in shallow water?
Bare bottom lakes! 🤣🤣🤣
Happy, Healthy and Blessed Sunday and plenty of them to come 😊🙏
Thanks
@@MichaelsFishRoom you're welcome 😊
I have found that the less I mess with the bottom of my tanks the more my plants grow. o.O So I have a area in my tanks where I have a stones pilled up with my plants in my cholla sticks that I leave alone. I don't disturb them during water changes and my plants do much better!
Exactly Rock Lady!
Everything I’ve purchased or received from you is in perfect condition still happy and healthy over a year later. Im a princess Leia fan. RIH Carrie Fisher.
RIP Princes....
You are right. I have a tank, which started out as a display tank and now has turned into my clown kilifish breeding tank. There is always a small amount of mulm in and around the rock work and people wonder why I have so many babies all the time. It is a combo of many plants and places for fry to hide and feed and grow. It is still a very beautiful display tank, even with mulm. I have also got potho's growing out of it, I also allow algae to grow in it, but I hardly have to ever do a water change, as I never get any readings for nitrates and my ammonia and nitrites are always 0. My TDS never goes over 125. It gets a 50 percent water change every month even with these perfect readings and top ups 3 times a week. I have cuba carpet in there, without CO2 and just vacuum the mulm from it to keep it growing, but leave it in other areas. In the end it's all about balance for the fish you are keeping. This is a tiny 2 foot tank with over 150 clown kili's, so planning to get a 4 footer and doing the same, but going to experiment and see if I can keep and breed clown kili's with threadfin rainbows in the same tank. I have a feeling these two very different species would do well together, given enough space and plants.
Sounds great!
Love the shirt- Good video!
Thanks!
I feel better after hearing you say, "That aint gonna happen. It's just not." I say that to myself everyday in my fishroom. lolol. R2D2.

I was looking for answers why my fries who were born and raised in the main tank with mulm, were bigger and look more healthier than the fries who I was able to catch and put in clean breeding tank (without mulm). Thanks for clarifying
Glad I could help
Omg, I have been worried and feeling guilty not vacuuming the substrate littered with mulms, not doing what the popular fishkeeper youtubers said to do.
My one and a half year old 40 gallon community tank hasn't been vacuum since January, I think. Plus, it's been couple months that I haven't had the need to do water changes, only adding water to the tank from the evaporation. Forget about ammonia and nitrite - the nitrate has stabilized at around 30ppm and hasn't gone up since. Fishes are happy and thriving. That's why I have been questioning the norm of doing the water changes + vacuuming, it just doesn't apply to every fish tank.
Watch my new video on water changes too!
@@MichaelsFishRoom I did, kind sir, right after this one in fact - and to my amazement, our situation is almost identical! :D :D

Thanks! Hope you stay!
Thank you for sharing this video! I couldn’t agree more about mule being beneficial.
Also, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to vacuum up the mule in your baby precocious tank without sucking up the fry as well. Yikes!
Your fish all look fabulous!
Also, the black tuxedo guppies I bought from you last year.... have bread so much they are overtaking my tanks... yes, I said tankS. LOL they are beautiful though. ☺️

R2-D2 rules! Most of the mulm in my fish tank is probably ramshorn snail poo. The tank I keep my blackworms in has mulm because if I vacuum the tank I'll vac out all my worms too. So I run a sponge filter in there and do water changes as if it were a fish tank.

Lol....will you marry me?
Sorry, but 1 husband is more than enough for this girl! LOL!!!
Lol...fair enough!
Thank you for the video. I am doing a deep cleaning on a tank right now and I could not clear all the mulm. I have filled and emptied this dam 55 5 times (after this drain) and I got it reasonable now. Our Oscars decided to join the ranks of breeders (were just in the Living room as pets) so we could not to a bunch of water changes and of course over fed the last month. Most of the babie$ have been moved (still a few that refuse to get netted) so now we can get the tank back to a decent look.
After watching this video I will for sure complete this last draining and filling (yet more prime and yes I used 2 caps every time I refilled knowing I was draining again just so the fry would have better odds of making it) and leave the remaining Mulm in there.
Good luck with the babies!
@@MichaelsFishRoom Yea lost them all. I do not want to comment further and make waves but I will say it will not and I mean EVER!! unless called for a special fish will be in our tanks again. I am dealing with the losses right now so I am just going to go before I say everything on my mind.

Just showed the first 6 movies to my GF, and she felt so bad for Darth Vader once she saw his backstory and how broken of a man he was, but was so glad to see his redemption in the end.
EDIT: I'm not a breeder, but I do have mollies in my tank and they do their thing hahaha. I have a moderate/heavily planted tank, and I don't do gravel vacs much. I leave the mulm there for the plants and the potential fry. I also plan on breeding some black neon tetras later this semester. they're super cool fish and I am so excited to have them breed

I can see why a breeding for profit operation would want mulm. That has to be a great generator of food for the fry.
Bingo!
MICHAEL- Great info. Please do a follow up video on how to clean the mulm from bare bottom tanks that are on the floor level.
Oh very tricky!
Air lift pump drains through a filter sock into a bucket. The water can be returned.
That will work for sure!

Great video. I had to go out of town this weekend for a DI competition. My daughter is in Destination Imagination. I had a ton of mulm in my juvinal tank. I didn't feed them for 2 days. They cleaned up the mulm and tank beautifully. :) I've only lost 1 fish in about a month, 2 if you count the cory that got stuck in the lift tube of an unused sponge filter. :( lol great video.

Cool!
Ive noticed that no matter how fast you suck up the mulm it always comes back in a day or two. Also, their poop will be decomposing and fouling the water but with mulm its much healthier decomposing poop. I say go micheal mulm away. Im gonna try it. Tired of being OCD over some crap on the bottom of tanks im just gonna try leaving it sit there.
Dude. You have seen my plecos and guppies breed in the MULM. MULM FOR LIFE!

Thanks for explaining why you keep dirty tanks 👍
You’re Welcome
Clear water does not mean clean water. Chemistry matters
I think that will be a new shirt!
Some hobbyists get 'excited' about detritus and mulm - some get bigger filters and/or powerheads to move the material to the filter. They think filters clean water - NOT.
Once organic waste decomposes (mulm) it no longer pollutes the water....and detritus in the filter just continues to decompose. So as you point out Michael, mulm is fine with ample water changes.
It’s like we are twins (nice name😉)
@@MichaelsFishRoom Yeah, but I'm older, wiser, and purdier! LOL

Pleco babies look so cute swimming through the mulm.
Question: how many hours a week are you working in the fishroom (include feeding).
Filet mignon in a cranberry/mulm sauce while watching the comedy stylings of C-P30.
Medium? Medium rare? Need details!
At least 20 HRs doing business stuff, 10 of those in the fish room.
Healthy mulm is inert. It doesn't release anything into your water. How do you know if you have healthy mulm? What does your water test say? Super simple. People complicate it, but it is really that simple.
(It is also why under gravel filters work. That's not popular but I'm ok with that.)
Yup
If mulm is so bad how come your fish are active and vibrant? BTW I have some mulm and my fish love it so much I con't find homes for all my baby bristlenose.
Exactly!

Favorite character is Vader. I have mulm in my endler tank and often observe the fry picking at it. I dont like it in my mbuna tank, I vac it up, but in that tank I purposely grow a lot of algae on the rocks and rear panel for them to graze on. Michael are you looking forward to The Mandalorian tv series?
OF COURSE I AM! (Silly question) LOL
MELODY MUNRO oooh Vader
Excellent video. Unhealthy fish in poor water quality don't breed. So you must be doing something right. 😊 I'm a simple fish keeper, don't do a ton of maintenance with my tanks. I deal with chronic illness and don't have the energy to do a ton of water changes and such. Working on increasing water changes frequency just a bit. I've got mulm and Java moss. My guppies and yellow Cherry shrimp are breeding and thriving. Just gotta know your species and keep what you are willing to do the upkeep on. I keep simple fish because I want simple upkeep. 😊 Looking forward to placing my first order with you next month in preparation for outdoor summer tubbing and starting some new lines indoors. 😊
Summer running is fun and requires virtually no maintenance.

well it's a good thing I don't have a show tank but I will hopefully 1 day & that 1 I'll keep supper clean just for videoing
BUT as far as the Mulm I was wondering if that was good or bad for guppies & you have cleared that issue up 4-me.
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the video. I came here because my ramshorn snail tank was developing mulm and detritus worms even though I only feed my snail twice a week, but its eggs hatched and was wondering if it was necessary to gravel vac.
So did you sub?
OMYGOD, MULM! There are 'experts' in every hobby so why would fish keeping be any different? Unless an opinion or advice is asked for, I never really find the need to give it. The solid fact is my guppies from Michael's Fish Room are some of the hardiest and prolific fish I've bought in a long time. What you're doing works! If someone has a problem with it challenge them to do it better. As Meow Man sez... "Suk Ma Bag."

How do you deal with silk / hair alage on the Java moss?
I don't.
Question: once the tank is properly cycled with molm the levels should even out? I often clean this up in my fry tank and wondering if I should just leave it there. My tank perimeters are
Gh: 15, kh: 40, ph: 6.5, nitrite: 0.5, nitrate 20

@JH Aquatics you should know better than anyone else with the microscope that piles of mulm breed deadly bacteria, fungus, worms etc poisonous to fish. Doctors even did a research paper on this that too much mulm is bad and breeds bad things. His answer that he's lazy is not okay. Healthy mulm grows green algae. His mulm doesn't grow anything visible just brown poison. His baby fish eat from this poison. It's not okay, it's wrong. Don't think so?
